How popular is the 1.8TSI 4x4? (SE Plus spec)

Featured Replies

I do about 12,000 miles a year and wanted a DSG. I tow a utility trailer, sometimes have bikes on the roof, or a roof box and go to all sorts of places, so needed grunt and a 4x4 - so no 1,2 DSG for me. So there is only ONE Yeti to go for in my case: the 140 diesel DSG. Had we got the 1,8 DSG I would have had to make some sums in terms of mileage, but as it stands I'm happy with my diesel.

I am only doing about 15,000 miles a year, and also would have considered a 1.8tsi DSG had it been available. Sadly, in the UK it is not. Import one from Russia? :giggle:

.. or put it another way; the CR110 should be compared with a 1.2TSI and a 1.8TSI should be compared with a CR170.

My earlier statement of diesels being more expensive was more of a sweeping generalisation rather than a specific model vs. model one.

Out of interest, what is the fuel consumption of the 1.8tsi around London where you average over a tankful (my diesel will do about 450 miles) 16mph? For that I mean driving stop start, congestion, queues, taking an hour to do 10 miles? My diesel will average about 30mpg in those conditions, but I suspect the 1.8tsi will be nearer 20mpg....

Id say between 25mpg and 27mpg at a guess as that sounds very similar to my rush hour commute when there is an accident or similar on the A10 - usually on a Friday night when you just want to get home! But thats OT! ;-)

Thanks, so a DSG version will be nearer 20mpg then.......if and when it comes to the UK.

No; it should get the same 25 - 27mpg

I think it is general knowledge that a heavy diesel engine with all its tech (DPF etc) always costs at least £1000 more than the EQUIVALENT petrol engine. Purely looking at power outputs and 0-60 figures Bahnstormer is correct in that the 110 TDI should be compared to the 1,2 (110 vs 105) and the 1,8 to the 170 TDI.

...3. I appreciate your comments that you are looking for an SE plus as it gives you 'all that you need'. However do take a serious look at the Elegance. I know it costs more but it gives you some important items of kit i.e. xenon headlights, that are extra on other model ...

Can you get lumbar support for the SE+ seats? Its an option on SEs and std on Elegance.

Or do folks find the seats OK without lumbar support for long journeys?

I find the non electric lumber on my passenger seat downright uncomfortable and VERY limited in its adjustment. The up and down, in and out electric one on my electric driver's seat is infinitely more comfortable and adjustable. I know you can only get this seat on the Elegance but if lumbar is a must you do need to try both.

Belive the SE Plus has lumber as standard.

The SE seats without lumber I had on the previous Yeti, where for me anyway, not as comfortable as the manual Elegance seats which do have the lumber as standard.

Although Moscow is not London and it is only ~800km on the odometer of my Yeti by now, I think I can post something useful on the topic too. Moscow can be compared to London in terms of traffic congestion anyway, I think. My fuel consumption is 11.7l/100km (24.14 MPG Imp) now according to the trip computer, and 12.2 (23.15 MPG Imp) based on the data from the 2 latest fuel receipts. I mostly do short journeys 5-10 km long (less often - 25 km, but no more so far) in the city. The trip computer is now showing 17 kph average speed over the last 40 kilometers (accumulated). And there is another key factor when it comes to fuel consumption: ambient temperature. It's been rather cold here for the last few weeks (between -15 and -30C). But every time I had managed to do more than 20km, the fuel consumption quickly dropped below 10l/100km (according to trip computer). So I am hoping to get less than 10l/100km (>28.24 MPG Imp) in the city cycle over the year eventually.

Thanks again for the comments guys, much appreciated. As mentioned SE Plus spec seems spot on for me, I'd picked up things like lumbar which is a must for me. I can also happily live with the 'Amundsen', it's far better than the stream fitted in my current VRS(!). Equally, I have two young kids and my alcantara trim has remained unmarked, therefore i'm not so concerned about the cloth trim. Leather would be nice, but I can't justify the cost (not with the list of options I have in mind!) - if the panormaic roof was standard on the Elegance then it would be a no brainer, sadly it is not. SE Plus also comes with privacy glass and as my mileage is limited I can live without HIDs/Xenons and i'll just uprate the existing H7s.

I'd love to drive the 1.8TSI in this, I really like my VRS so i'm hoping it will be 80% as much fun to drive - I could live with that.

I also belive that Petrol will be back in favour, the tide is already turning with the small turbo engines now coming out. I don't want this topic to be that debate though. I have done the maths and even on my low miles diesel still works out cheaper overall. However for the sake of saving £30 odd a month, i'll take the car that I prefer. Jabbasport may also be able to work their magic with it. TBH it all comes down to the deal though, as mentioned my VRS is fine, it's just getting a bit old. I'm off to a SKODA VIP cost price event tomorrow. If they come up trumps with the Yeti prices it will be ordered.

Nooo, Id be gobsmacked if it didnt get identicle figures given the driving scenario you mention!

Well the 6sp DSG is far worse fuel consumption than the manual box.....but I guess if they fitted the 7 speed dry clutch one, that would be different, as the 1.2tsi & 1.2tsi DSG are similar.

Ah, well that's what I assumed they'd fit as I'm sure that's what's in the octavia 1.8TSi?

I believe it is a 6 speed as per this thread

Weyland, I am in almost the same position as you, except my VRS is newer (2011). I am swapping if for a Yeti 1.8TSi SE+ in August as i am getting a great buy back deal (sorry but am Forces and this is a tax free sale so I wont mention prices! :) )

Will be sorry to see the VRS go, have always been a VW man before (Golf Mk IV GT TDI130, Mk V GTI Ed 30) but the Skoda was such a bargain it was silly to go for a VW. Must say I have been really impressed with it, and so have my workmates, as two have ordered them since. But as mentioned before, with the new model coming out in 2013 I decided to try something new, the Yeti.

Can anyone tell me though, does the Amundsen Sat Nav come with European Mapping or just the UK? If only the UK, can you order other mapping?

Thanks inadvance

I have done about 1500km in my new DSG Yeti by now. And consumption average is 9,5L/100km by clock. It has been slowly falling from 10,5. So - a good progress. I've only driven it in Tallinn. So some congestion etc. but probably not as bad as in metropols like London, Moscow etc.

About 6-speed DSG and manual consumption... I had 2,0TFSI Seat Leon with the same box and there is no way it was "far worse" than manual i this car. I had better consuption figures than my mate in the same manual car. It changes down much sooner than You'd do in manual. Same goes with Yeti 1,8 I believe.

That sounds about right. 9.5 l/100km works out at about 30mpg. My overall average is 37mpg (7.63 l/100km). With more out of town work, it is going up slightly. it will do 42mpg ish (6.73 l/100 km) on a run at 70mph.

What drags mine down is driving too much in heavy traffic in London.

I've only driven it in Tallinn.

Näe, kus oma kaaslinlasi võib kohata!!!

Sorry, just had to say Hello - It is a small world!!! :hi:

(Hopefully not totally O.T. though - my father just ordered Yeti 2.0 TDi 4x4 (140 bhp) ,manual. Can't wait! (Although they said it takes at least 6 - 8 months... :wonder: )
