Can someone tell me. Is the actual console (part the bushes fit in) the same across the entire Fabia range or does the vRS have stronger ones given the heavier engine.

ISTR one of the VRS ones is different. More to do with the shape/size of the gearbox though. Unless I'm wrong and it's the subframe that's different.

i think the passenger side one is different on the VRS because of the mount for the 6 speed box

Correct, the subframe is different on the n/s to allow room for the diff on the bigger six speed gearbox so the n/s console has a part milled down flat on it so it can clear.

just get one that fits in the first place. Saves any risk of compromising the structural safety of the console

I just bought a pair from eBay. They are of another VAG car, the guy said they will fit a vRS but thought I had better check on here.

If it's for a 6 speed gearboxed same platform car (Ibiza Cupra) then it will fit I'd reckon, with the added benefit of having solid bushes. Milling any part is going to be a bit expensive, cheaper to sell it on and buy the correct one for that side.
