anyone changed to digital radio in their mk2 octavia?

Featured Replies

as per title really. just bought a 57 plate L+K octavia, so im hoping to keep it for a few years. i love listening to 6 music, so just wondered how easy it is to swap setups, and how much itd cost? or would it be easier plugging a seperate into the aux socket?

thanks for any advice

Good luck with this project mate.

Aux is the easy way, if it can be done.

I'll follow this topic with intrest.

In a similar vein, I was thinking about changing the stereo to something with a USB port....but the integration of the other car systems (reversing sensors, climate control etc) with the stereo display made it a non starter for me......so I'd suggest the aux route also.

Let us know if you find a decent DAB module - I too am a big 6music fan......

Autodab will essentially get you add on DAB that integrates with your original head unit, but you're looking at £300+.

I'm in the process of getting an RCD510 into my car with a combined FM/DAB aerial. It's not been cheap and there are a couple of coding issues but I'm almost sorted.

I have got the previous Pure Highway unit in my car and it works a treat, easy to install via Aux socket too.

thanks for the links, i like the look of that pure highway 300Di. been looking into it, and rang halfords, but im just getting teenagers on the phone, nobody with any knowledge of them.

i assume that itll plug into the aux yep? well, the aux on my octavia's under the armrest between seats. is that where itll have to plug into? or is there one behind the dash? if so itll have to be done professionally i think.

also, will it be able to work from the main display, so i can search, play etc from the original skoda radio controls? or is it purely standalone? i assume it plays through the system speakers and not its own?

thanks

It's like a parrot hands free kit. The controller is connected between the cars stereo and the cars power leads etc via a harness kit for your car if it doesn't have a standard ISO interface. So sound is through your car speakers but is controlled through the highway control screen. It's very similar to the parrot mkI9200 hands free kit on my van. It might not work on my van as I have the hands free kit fitted already but will be looking into it

i spose the fact that i dont know what an ISO interface is means i really need to get it installed properly? and does the harness kit come included or is that an extra cost?

do you reckon itd cost £200 all in to get it up and working?

thanks

You are looking at approx £50 for the cables to install it (you need the right SOT, a twin fakra adapter and two further adapters as per my link). This is not included in the list price, so you are looking at about £250-£260 all in fitted.

Fitting yourself isn't hard, and if you decide to do in through the aux-in rather than the radio you only need the SOT cable. Arguably you can do without those too if you're happy to take the power feeds from the fuse box.

Don't forget the student discount codes and quidco (which can knock the price down from £180 to £146 if you're careful)

I absolutely love mine. I can't get enough of Radio 4 extra

nipped to halfords today to check them out. pure highway now discontinued, but had a display fake there which showed it to be too big for my liking anyway.

the 300Di was as expected, small but expensive and extra to fit. and nobody there again could give me much help, so ill ask you the question i was going to ask :-)

as i maybe mentioned earlier, the aux is under the armrest. i certainly wouldnt mind a little unit living in there as ill only tune it to 6 music and leave it, or plug in a usb stick and leave it in. i cant see myself wanting to change anything during the journey. but......... would that create problems with having to be connected to the aerial? and is the aerial just an unobtrusive internal aerial? nowt on the outside of the car?

if the 300Di isnt going to tick the boxes, are there any other smallish 'not too expensive' adaptors to consider that will?

thanks

Two bits to this...

The main unit is about 1/2 size of a paperback and sits nicely under the storage tray in front of the gear lever. Easiest/cheapest way to power it would be from the 12v socket in the console, and the controller and aux-in could easily go in the jumbo box.

The down side is that the supplied aerial - whilst it works well - has part on the inside of the windscreen and part outside. Very easy to fit, but it is still outside

hmm mebbes be able to live with that, but how would the aerial connect to the main unit? are there gonna be wires everywhere? id like to keep it tidyish if possible.

thanks a lot

I've seen a few Skodas fitted with an AutoDAB CTDAB-SK1. Apparently, it works with 2007+ Stream, Audience, Swing and Bolero. One owner told me that it feeds its signal into the head unit via a direct FM antenna connection, but I couldn't tell it wasn't via aux. It has a CAN-BUS connection so the integration is very good. It costs about £190 all in.

If you mean to the 300Di box, the cable from the aerial (the bit on the inside of the window) runs down under the A pillar trim, below the glovebox into the front of the centre console.

The wires to the controller and the audio jack would run inside the console and pop up inside the jumbo box

Power to the 300Di loom would also be within the console

HTH

There should be no wires on display

thanks chaps. latest situation is....... ive just downloaded the 'tune in radio' android app for my desire HD. its found 6 music, so before shelling out big wedge, ill try that in the car connected to aux. ill need a lead for it first tho, so what would be best for sound quality? desire HD usb connection one end, 3.5 jack the other (if such a lead exists) or 3.5 both ends? or will it all sound the same through the car speakers?

thanks a lot

3.5mm both ends. Skoda sell one for about 3 quid IIRC. I've used Tune in on my phone and found the buffering annoying and it drops off in areas where cellular data is not available.

I am almost completely DABbed up now, but not without a cost although it looks like its meant to be there, doesn't use FM modulation with a combined DAB/FM aerial

aaargh how frustrating! 6 music plays fine on my phone now at home. bought a £3 lead for it, plugged it into aux, started playing, bliss :-) but then cuts out all the time!! try again at home, fine. in the car, cuts out. grrrrr >-(

Does your phone have a wifi or 3G connection at home? It WILL lose data connections in the move where reception is great, cell site capacity is maxed or you travel between cell sites.

As said above you will get buffering issues and areas where it will drop off.

  • Author

aye, youre right mate. ah well, was worth a shot at £3 total cost :-D

now im turning my attention to trying to get it to feed direct from the internet site rather than an app, and ill monitor the data usage. or will i have same issues you think? anyways, i go to the 6music site and hit 'listen' but nothing happens :-/ think i need to investigate what my phones missing to allow it to play internet streams.

thanks

Definitely worth 3 quid and you've now got a cable to connect your iPod.

I think you will have exactly the same issues streaming from a website as you'll need a good data connection all the time.

hmmm just looked at that link and cant make it come to £155. for me its saying 150 minus 10 equals 140, then plus £25 fitting, all in at £165.

you got a special code or something in your email?

cheers
