Problem ?

Featured Replies

Ok well a hard one to explain this. Was on the motorway this afternoon and keeping up with some fast traffic 90+ and the car started behaving oddly. Anything over 90 and it felt like I had a flat tyre, was going thudump thudump. Let the accelerator off and speed dropped and it was fine then again accelerating and it came back. Don't think it was the dsg but it was very strange, I can't quite pin down what the problem is. This is the first time I been on the motorway so first time I have experienced it. Checked the tyres and they seem to all have balances on them so no idea now I'm lost.

  • If that was a misfire, and it was really knocking power back id have expected to see the EML flashing on the dash for a fair few seconds.

  • that is a worry..... I still believe they will just replace it and take the old box away for examination

Update: vrs comes home tomorrow night :-D

dont go over 90?

Good reply but, keeping up in the fast lane on the motorway you barely drop 70. Yes I am aware of the speed limits but I'm worried about my car as it shouldn't do that

It shouldn't.

I'd get the wheel balance check as a start as they could be out of balance despite having weights on them.

What gear and what sort of RPM did the thumping apear or was it only speed related?

  • Author

Thanks can, it was I think in either 6 or 7 not screwing the arse out of it just overtaking on the motorway so not real high rpm. It did feel like thumping but only going over 90 though then dropped off.

Definitely coming from the tyres? How long have you had the car?

I'm not sure vrs powered, had it 5 weeks now. I think so seems to only happen at them speeds like so can't think of anything else it could be. I think I'll take it back to the dealers tomorrow.

I know this may sound a bit daft but are u sure it was not just the road surface as I have driven on the motorway where the surface has sections of concrete areas then tarmac evenly spaced and it make the sound you described.

Are you sure that the sound wasn't some expansion joints in the road ?

At that speed with these very low profile tyres, any cracks or expansion joints sound terrible :wonder:

Edit - hammer beat me to it

  • Author

Possibly hammer, I have had it before on the smooth bypass though so that wouldn't explain why it's not happening when letting off and slowing down.

I was doing 120 and smooth as silk, on a private road though 1.6crtdi no dsg might have been the road surface

I'll have a see again tomorrow, what speed rating are them sport contact tyres?

if you take it back to the dealer and you say the fault occurs at 90 they won't/shouldn't test it.

so maybe an idea to say it happens at 70 to them.

:;)

  • Author

Yea I'm going to tell them that but then they wouldn't find anything testing it at 70. I got a feeling it could be under inflated. Is this a sign of underinflation?

you should have had the low tyre pressure warning come on

you should have had the low tyre pressure warning come on

Depends if the dealer set it, mine wasn't set when I got the car

It also will not detect if all the tires are deflated exqually. Also I've not actually tested mine to check it works.

Does sound like it could be wheel balance.

Could be the wheel weights are only slightly out because then it would only be noticable at higher speeds

Would warranty deal with this? If the car hasn't been set up correctly?

Yeah a good dealer should do it free off charge, i had my wheels balanced at my dads work and it only took about 20 mins at most but that was with two of us doing it.

Another thought it you might have scudded a pothole at speed and damaged a wheel so it wouldnt be 100% round that would maybe cause thudding at high speeds

id go along with the either the wheel balancing being out, or potential warped wheel, this would get more notable the higher speed you go. Have you hit any pot holes?

Obvious point, but have you checked your pressures

Ok so no engine warnging light but I'm sure it's Mis firing under acceleration around 80. It just feels like engine gives up then comes back gives up then comes back. I'm getting Skoda assist out, on the m60 north junction for leigh

I was going to suggest a Concrete road, like the M6 going past birmingham, Near the NEC.

If it was front wheel balence you would be getting some feedback from the steering wheel, lots of vibrations which gets worse with faster speed.

If it was a rear wheel you probably wont tell from the steering wheel.

if its the engine or gear box, I dont know...

Is it over certain revs, does this happen in other gears?
