Anyone?

I'm guessing turning the boost down slightly may prolong the life of turbo, hence my post.

Isn't adjusting the boost an ECU mod so you'd need someone who could do ODB-II tuning. Obviously I may be talking out of my a$$ ;)

Chris

Yes I think the Boost Actuator is controlled by the ECU, this if you where to get the car chipped the actuator setting is change to hold boost longer.

The Turbo doesnt have an wastegate as such.. the actuator controls the VNT vanes.. so all you can really do is limit the boost at low RPM but it will not have an effect at high RPM. the actuator itself is controlled from the ecu, using that box on top of the drivers side turrett.

Ok then, thanks people. What revs does the turbo kick in? I normally change about 2k so would that hit the turbo? I'm thinking turbo's are expensive items and so want to extend this one's life as much as possible.

The turbo is actually spinning all the time.. the VNT change so it starts to boost around 1700rpm

you shouldnt be afraid to rev it, working the turbo hard helps keep it clean (as anyone on the RR day may have saw with Josh's mums car on the rollers) it was very smokey due to all the deposits being burned off and the oilseals getting a good work out.

What sort of symtoms would you find if the actuator is knackered?

It wouldnt boost below about 2000rpm, i thought it was the problem with my negative deviation fault code but its working fine. im beginning to sway towards either a boost leak, or the MAP sensor on my car now

There is a tester thing on vagcom for this

think its go to monitor block 11 in the engine section then click basic setting.

it will rev the engine to about 1700 then move the actuator blades, you will hear a click, then a whisle as the turbo spools up.. then it switches off 5 seconds later.. and back on

:) i found this when having a play last night :D

Colin, you know of my problem. Just thinking of possible causes of it.

Is there anything that controls the amount of boost at the high end of the rev range(other than the ECU)?

Maybe I should invest in VAG COM myself! What would I need?

are you sure that its overboosting? - when my car goes into limp mode (bar once) its not left a fault code.. it could be several problems, as IIRC the boost will stay constant from about 2k onwards on a diesel.

for vagcom, you would need a cable and a laptop... and the software.. (shareware would do)

Im hoping to do some testing on my car as soon as i get my laptop sorted so should be able to help more :)

General concensus appears to be to give the turbo a little workout at least every once in a while ;)

I do try and keep mpg in mind on my daily commute as I cannot afford to be running at 20mpg :D - it's worth giving it a bit of revving to do at least once a week (noting you probably wanna do this with a properly warmed up engine).

Normally I get stuck in a traffic jam at some stage, so I try to accelerate firmly when the traffic clears after that, and then let the engine idle for a bit before turning off the engine. Gets rid of the crap and gives the turbo the chance to cool down a little.

I'll find out if any fault codes are logged & hopefully what the problem is on Monday.

Boost will stay constant untill 4Krpm & then die off. This is where mine is hitting limp mode (around 4.2Krpm).

I think I'll have a look at some laptops this weekend!!!

(Sorry for the thread hijack!!) ;)

Look for one with a USB2 port for ease of use and fast communication using VAG-COM software.

And a serial port if you dont fancy shelling out for the expensive cable
