I use sainsburys city diesel purely because i get vouchers for it and save 5p for every pound spent,

Im sorry, but i find the quieter bit hard to believe! what noticable difference would fuel make to the sound of a diesel.

I don't know the science behind it and if i'm honest I really don't care. My car runs a lot smoother, quieter and is a little bit more efficient when running on BP ultimate, that's all I know. I'm not paying an extra 4p per litre for a laugh.

The fuel explodes in a more uniform fashion (Higher cetane), hence smoother running and more power per stroke.

i have used the Bp a lot, but i have to say that when i do i see less smoke which i miss if you pull away from someone lol. but i have to say that i have found a difference in that the car is smoother, in my old VRS after using it for about 5k miles i thought it had a little impact on the performance, but then again that could just of been the car breaking in more. Traded it in not long after that so not too sure which one it was.

Tried BP Ultimate, did not find any noticeable difference in either the Fabis vRS or Polo TDi in economy, smoke or performance. Gone back to Sainsbury/Tesco due to cost, or BP/Shell etc if convenient.

Had a 'debate' with a petrol station owner in Cumbria, she was adamant that her car had only managed to do just under 200K miles 'cause it always had Ultimate, had no answer when pointed out that my Astra outside had done over 200K on Tesco fuel with no problems at all.

Interesting claim bearing in mind that as far as I know Ultimate diesel has only been available since October 2003. If that's all her car has been run on then it's a 2 1/2 yr old car with 200k on it. That's 80k a year :eek:

It seems that we are pretty much divided into two schools on this one. Engine sound is a subjective thing. Some can tell the difference, some cannot. I think this is in much the same way as some can hear a difference after the engine oil has been changed, some not. It will also depend on what you ran before. There is IMO no real difference to be heard between Ultimate and Shell Extra, but a big difference to the stuff Tesco use around here. Even one of my pupils noted the difference in sound after a fill up from Tesco to Shell Extra.

The fuel consumption thing is more easy to pin down. I use two tanks per week generally and I trialled Ultimate against Esso (which in turn often runs a bit smoother than the Tesco stuff) and found that Ultimate gave me a small but tangiable improvement in fuel economy around 3.4% IIRC. This is not enough to offset the price, but given it runs a little better on the stuff, I tend to use it.

Also, in hot weather, less smoke from the Ultimate. Shell similar, all others pretty smokey at full chat.

Best thing to do is try it. For the sake of a couple of quid a tank, just give it a go.

Only fuel that really stands out as being different to the others is the Sainsburys. Round here, it runs 5 - 7% poorer fuel economy than anything else. Even bigger difference in the 04 Fiesta tdci I had before.

When it comes to petrol, both the MR2 and Omega run tangiably better on Ultimate, particularly in the midrange, but neither run well on Optimax. Tesco 99 goes OK too, but the Ultimate is definately better.

No. Was dealing with the so-called advanced unleaded fuels of the time, also thought they were a waste of time like BP Ultimate. But yes, have done 80K in a year - though across a couple of cars.

It all sounds like go faster stripes for fuel to me :P

As stated before, I try and use Shell 'Extra' when I can.

Mainly because of the price.:confused: I paid 93.9pence a Ltr today.

Only thing I've noticed is a bigger hole in my Wallet and a few extra Nectar Points, sticking with Sainsburys myself and I still get my Nectar Points.

I have tried it with no noticeable difference. :rolleyes:

I stick to Tesco fuel as its 3 miles away and every time I fill up 38 quid goes onto my clubcard for vouchers/airmiles.

My old diesel did 250k without anything special, infact it was probably the extra cleaning power in modern dervs that finally shagged the seals on the fuel pump. What gets me is that the older cars could deal with absolubtly ****e fuels, that waxed in the winter and had systems to deal with this, however now the more modern cars have to meet tighter emissions regs so better fuels are required.

I've been using BP Ultimate for a few months now but due to circumstances beyond my control, last Thursday I had to put in £15 of run of the mill Shell Diesel.

All was well for a few miles but then everything went Pete Tong. Car became a lot rougher at lower revs, lots more smoke and what a racket too. I've stalled this car 5 times since I got it last October. Twice on the day I got it (understandable), twice last Thursday and once last Friday. The engine roughness seemed to make it feel less willing to rev and I think that's what caught me out.

Anyway I did a bit of sight seeing to use up what fuel was left and filled up with Ultimate last night. Again after a few miles everything changed (for the better this time).

Maybe I got some of a bad batch of Shell diesel, maybe the 2.0 PD TDI engine prefers BP Ultimate. I don't know and really don't care as i'll be avoiding all other fuels at all cost in future.

Auto Express ran a comparison on petrols and all but very high performance engines produced LESS power when running higher octane fuels because the ECUs were developed to run on specific fuel and couldn't adjust. I wonder how diesels cope with higher cetane values - perhaps there's a similarity...

I'm sceptical but I guess after 25K it's time to find out...

Been experimenting again, full tank of diesel in fabia vRS for same route long overnight motorway runs, tesco gives 400 miles plus or minus 5 'till fuel light illumintes, so does BP Ultimate, so does Sainsbury's, in fact so does everything i've bunged in it so far. Only difference appears to be less smoke on the ultimate, but engine seems same on any fuel, no more prone to stall, sound rough or anything else really. Long way from convinced...

A lot also depends on driving style IMHO - if you are higher up the rev range the ultimate and extra fuels tend to give me better fuel economy.

That stated the FMIC is really paying off as the mpg is not impacted anywhere near as much as during last year when I had the standard SMIC and heatsoak isn't happening.

Oddly I'm getting really good mpg at the moment - drove normally on a high 50s mpg road and got 64mpg on the trip when I got home :thumbup:

I don't do this aircon rubbish though - open windows and fresh air :D
