BP Ultimate Diesel - Opinions

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just wondered everyone's opinion's on these 'performance fuels'. I have recently seen BP Ultimate Diesel being advertised and wondered if anyone has used it or had any experiences with it? Does it work?

The claimed benefits on BP's website are cleaner engine nozzels, quieter engines, lower emissions and increased performance. They claim that to get the most out of it you should use it on a regular basis.

I know that a lot of people swear by Shell Optimax and BP Ultimate petrol and wondered if anyone felt the same about BP Ultimate diesel?

BP Ultimate diesel seem to make the car run smoother, didn't really notice any difference in the performance or economy

Tried both this and Shell Extra and it didn't gain me any extra mpg, and cost more per litre. Didn't notice any smoother running or extra performance so I'll stick with my Tesco City diesel.

Interestingly, the biodiesel blend I tried when it was priced below city diesel did make the car run smoother and mpg was up 3-5mpg....

I like the shell garage as it has nice "mags" lol

I worked out the additional cost to be something in the region of

Just use Tesco personally, purley for convience

Have used both tesco city deisel and have also used BP ultimate. Having the trip computer helps check the difference. BP ultimate tends to give me 4-5mpg more when driving at a constant 80-90mph motorway driving. Whenever I can get ultimate locally rather than at a motorway service station I always use it (most of my driving is on long runs have completed 3.5k in the last 2 weeks). Shell though in my opinion makes no difference over supermarket cheap stuff.

I've been using BP Ultimate diesel for several thousand miles.

Not convinced there's a significant consumption improvement, certainly not to cover the significantly increased cost over Tesco diesel, and I've noticed no performance or quietness benefits either.

all it does is make you poorer

I use Tesco fuel, have uses Esso super dooper fuel but noticed no difference after 3 tanks apart from my wallet feeling lighter.

When I tried it with my Fabia TDI, BP Ultimate gave me just enough extra mpg to cover the increased cost. So all I gained was increased range (about 30 miles extra per tank).

I now use BP Ultimate diesel (95%) with biodiesel (5%) in my vRS: it's worth about 2-3 mpg, gives smoother, quieter running and much less soot. But blending your own bio mix is more expensive even than BP Ultimate.

I have been using BP ultimate in my "other Diesel". My opinion is that it does improve performance, albeit very marginally. The main benefits are that it "seems" to run smoother and generates less visible smoke. My personal opinion is that it is probably cheaper and just as good to use supermarket diesel with a prescribed shot of Millers Diesel Power Plus.

BP Ultimate made a huge difference in performance in my last car (a chipped Megane II 1.9 DCI). I have to say though, I can't notice any difference in performance or economy when using Ultimate in my Octavia 1.9 PD 105.

I use BP ultimate and shell extra when I can, main thing I notice is less smoke than the 'supermarket' types, which is why I choose 'em.....

I tried bryans biodiesel mix, and that deffinatley makes the car run smoother....

not noticed any changes in power or fuel economy....

I fill up on the Shell 'Extra' or whatever its called when I can.

Mainly because I have found that most Shell garages around here are as cheap or cheaper than Tesco.

I too have noticed that I have NO smoke when using the Shell stuff.

Most of the time I use Tesco's finest, as I drive past every day.

Yep, same here, Shell cost's the same as the supermarket round here!

I really don't like supermarket fuels, they have no positives imo, with the car being really quite smokey, and noisy (particularly when cold start up).

However, I dont think theres much difference between the rest of the brands tbh, although I normally use premium diesel as the added detergents etc can only do good. If I have to use supermarket fuel it gets a shot of Millers for piece of mind.

Saying that, I really cant see there being any issues with using just supermarket fuel, can't really see it effecting the performance or longevity of the engine, its just nice to be kind to the car.

This could be my imagination, but I'm sure Evo mag ran a group test a few years back with different types of petrol. They found that Optimax did indeed clean the engine more than the other brands, but they raised concerns that using it continually could clean the engine too much and remove much needed lubricants, leading to premature wear and engine failure....

As said, no idea on how true that is, but I might have a dig through my pile of Evo's tonight and see if I can track it down :D

Please do, sounds interesting.

Although the likes of Millers advertises itself as having lubricating and cleansing properties

I sometimes use Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Petrol on Vladimir. I tend to get less mpg, but I think that is a because in my head I am thinking 'racing petrol must accelerate more.'

When we are doing on a long motorway trip I always use Optimax (or whatever) because I think I am being ripped off on the price anyway so I might as well get the most expensive so as I can complain loads. That is really illogical I know, but there you go.

As 'perfomance' on my car is limited, I have never noticed huge diffrences.

Use shell diesel or shell diesel extra.

The extra is a little less smokey and gains me probably 1-2MPG at present. My main reason for this is that the shell is cheaper than or as cheap as the supermarkets around here.

Tried BP ultimate for about 3 tanks, less smoke and slightly smoother, but i don't know if that is the case over diesel extra. Both have higher cetane and the extra is the same price as regular, whereas ultimate is an extra 4-5p over the already high BP prices.

I use BP Ultimate Diesel for work in the van for one simple reason, double nectar points! I wouldn't bother else. And the car just uses whatever is going except supermarket and people like Jet, Murco, Total.

I was shocked at the racket from my new car first thing on a cold morning and assumed the oil level was low (which of course it wasn't). I then decided to try BP Ultimate and was very impressed at how much it has quietened things down. Fuel economy is up by about 1.5mpg (so the saving just about covers the extra cost per litre) and performance feels increased but it's deceptive as the car runs substantially smoother too. I exclusively use BP Ultimate (when it's available where I need to fill up).

I'm occassionally reminded of the difference BP Ultimate has made when it's not available and I have to use normal city diesel. The car then feels a lot rougher and noisier so I only stick in a fivers worth to get me to the next BP station.

Not sure if it's related but my car oil level hasn't dropped at all in its first 5,400 miles.

Hi

I found BP Ultimate to just fall short of covering its extra cost in fuel economy terms. I do around 45,000 miles a year and find that I will be around

Im sorry, but i find the quieter bit hard to believe! what noticable difference would fuel make to the sound of a diesel.

Maybe i am just to used to BIG diesel engines where you dont care about noise!

In my experience the major difference in diesels is the specific gravity, the higher your SG the more fuel your going to get into the engine = more power, but then i am talking about 8.9 litre engines :S
