Roof wrap

Featured Replies

I'm playing with the idea of getting the roof panel on my Cappucino Yeti wrapped in gloss black - mainly because I often have muddy bikes on the roof and don't want falling debris (mud and gravelly bits) scratching up my roof.

Has anyone here done something similair?

If I decide to go ahead, I'll let everyone know how I got on and post some pix.

Vinyl cladding an entire car is not uncommon these days so there are lots of companies out there doing this sort of thing. So getting a competitive price won't be difficult. Do you have a sunroof? I was wondering the other day if it would be cheaper to have a sunroof Yeti's roof done due to the acres of glass up there. But I suspect since it will be ONE piece of vinyl around the sunroof you won't save any money. Doh. You could however use the vinyl they cut out for the sunroof to cover your mirrors "gratis" I'd imagine. Apart from labour of course. Please let us know once you get prices.

Already have a price - local place that's meant to be good. Obviously I have connections through work so I get a bit of a discount.

I don't have a sunroof but I think you'll find it may be dearer as there is extra labour involved and they need to use the same size sheet and cut it out.

I only want the "middle part" doing - quote is £150.00 or £120.00 to me.

Will think about it - also have the option of just going clear so it only protects the roof and is almost invisible.

What does "middle part" mean? That quote is not for the whole roof then?

Hi,

I think its a good idea to have different color roof top with vinly wrapped. the first day I have collected the car from the dealer I made it wrapped. it's mato brown with top wrapped in black.

the idea is to minimize the weird design in B pillar. (roof color in black helps C and D pillar looks better, as in harmony with roof)

anyway here are some pics ( sorry about the dirty car, it was very mudy day and I wanted to post it without waiting to clean the car)

I do not know about the costs, I frend of mine who has a Sonax dealership made the vinyl and did not charged me as a new car gift.

mine has a panoramic sunroof, but it did not mattered as they have used in piece and cut the middle, as Johann suggested.

its harder to wrap the top because of sunroof and roofbars compared to any other car.

they do it in one squre cut piece in very small time, but in this case, the sunroof, roofbars and plastic covered rain drainage cavity makes it harder to do that. so higher labor costs are not surprising I guess.

the problem is either you have to detach the roofbars which is not very easy and we did not do that(they are not in the edge, so the vinly has to go around their attachment point) or you have to make a small cut in vinyl and wrap them edge to edge very precisely.

another problem is there are plastic rain drainage covers. after the vinly is wrapped, they are hard to fit in their original places, because the vinly makes the gap smaller and the plastic part is not looking as straight as before.

other that that, when I made that, Skoda was not offering different color rooftops, and when I see that I though I made a good descision.<br />

I like the yeti better this way, also it protects the roof paint from birds and anything coming from above.

I will try to put some detailed pictures of a cleaner version of car next time

To clarify, I only want the centre part of the roof wrapped, ie. up to the little inset trim strips - not around the roof rails and down to the edge as per the photoshop.

I'd go clear as i think not wrapping the edges might look strange

Ah. In that case definitely only do it clear as with the Yeti having a "floating roof" design it will look mightly strange having a black bit in the middle!

Really? I was thinking it might look kind of funky.... :-/

One person's funky is another's outright weird. The lines are there I grant you that, but those two slivers of body colour on each side will look weird. Especially at the back where you will have two Cappuccino squares on each side. Though from dead ahead you will also have two peculair body colour bits under the roof rails.

I did a quick black excercise on your roof rack picture:

As a comparison to wrapping I asked my dealer last week when I ordered my Yeti if, by chance, the twol tone paint job was available in the UK yet. As expected the answer was no. But he did say that he had had several new Fabias recently where he had a local paint shop spray their roof a different colour - costing about £300. He would have been happy to organise that for me for 'a similar' price.

I decided that it seemed a bit much to have a respray before I'd even driven the car

Even more so when you consider that with a wrap it can be taken off by the next owner if he hates it (or you tire of it). Having it painted "ruins" that car for life. Vinyl wrap is the only way to go these days.

I'm still undecided on my wrap will keep you posted. I could just keep a brush in the car and brush the bikes off.....LOL!

Went to look at a "one owner from new" Shogun a while back....in white. Didn't know they made them in white in 2010.

They didn't...a lady bought it and wanted white so had it resprayed from new...the engine bay was silver.

Told the dealer "no way", bodyshop job not as good as std. etc.

When he realised I wasn't going to buy it, he confessed that it had been sat there for months as nobody wanted a one year old resprayed car.

He only took it in because he supplied it from new and the owner traded it in for a new one.

Mitsubishi Brighton - it's probably still there! Hahahaaha.

If the dealer is as foolish as Mike57's in letting people spray their brand new Fabia roofs instead of wrapping them, then he deserves to be stuck with sprayed car! Serves him right for being so behind the times.

I've seen wrapped cars with the wrap removed and razor blade lines all through the lacquer....it's not foolproof. ;)

Ouch! So as with anything best to have it done by someone with a good reputation. A company that does German Taxis for example. Yes that will be the best. :giggle: (Though the fuel cost to get to Germany might not appeal) They've been wrapping and unwrapping German Merc taxis like that for decades.

Yup. I'm German much as I hate to admit it. I drive over at least once a year - usually try to get my servicing done while I'm there. I'm sure you can imagine why - they are so anal about cars over there it's ridiculous.

Personally I reccomend wrapping, its easier and much better value than spraying a car. As said nobody wants a sprayed car when its time to sale.

I do not know yet what will happen if I decide to unwrap it, but still much better way to go than spraying. also it can be seen as a protective layer to original paint.

also there are very good colors in not matte, people usually go for matte black etc to tune their cars, so usually people thing that wrapping is only in matte colors, but it's not. If you ever see a shiny wrapped car, I bet you did not even notice it its wrapped. mine was shiny black wrapped at top, and it looks as good as painted, and people do not notice it's wrapped or painted.

Hi did any one get this done ?

I'm looking to get a wrap on my new yeti as again put kayaks etc on roof and don't want to damage it

Found this on YouTube looks a good job

Had my white monster's roof and wing mirrors wrapped in gloss black and never regretted it (cost was about £200).  When traded in recently, dealer was more than happy as it gives the potential buyer the option either to retain the wrap or have it removed.
