Picture of Octavia Mk2 with non-OEM head unit?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've just bought an '06 plate Octavia vRS. It has the Stream headunit which I want to replace. I've been having a look at the options and want to know if anyone has any pictures of a non-OEM (or Zenec etc) head unit fitted? Basically, something that requires a fascia adapter so I can see how good/bad they look when using one.

Anyone got any pics?

I've just fitted a Zenec NC2010 in mine, will try and get some pics later for you :-)

Here we go then, first a shot of the Nav. system running. (No, I don't live in Bangor - just the first place I thought of  )ph2f.jpg

A more general view of the whole dash

I'm really happy with how the unit looks and functions. Willing to answer questions about it if anyone has any?

Here's my old Zenec MC5600

Thanks for those. The Zenec units do fit great, but I can't really afford to buy one at the moment, so I'm looking at standard double DIN units. This means I'm going to end up with big chunks of plastic either side of the head unit - just wanted to see what this looks like in real life.

Have you considered a Columbus? I got mine second hand for £425 so it's not as expensive as a Zenec. Obviously, being an OEM unit, it looks great when installed. Have to say, I'm not a massive fan of how after-market units look in the Octavia.

I was lucky enough to stumble accross my Zenec 2nd hand and it cost me half what my 2nd hand Columbus cost and had more functions

Personally, Unless you want/need SatNav/DVD functionality I would look to buy a Bolero

...but by the sound of it, I'd need not only the Bolero/Columbus, plus a CANBUS upgrade, plus a Bluetooth module, plus access to VagCOM. That's likely to mean spending a couple of hundred on top of the cost of the head unit itself I guess?

Yes, yes and yes, probably  That's why I stumped up for the Zenec, because it was a one box, plug and play upgrade that gave me everything I wanted and why an aftermarket head unit of some sort is probably a good option for you...

Playing devil's advocate, there's a list of members on here who have VCDS (current version of VagCOM) and are prepared to help others with coding, so that might help a bit if there's one near you.

Something else to think about, if you bought a Columbus, Yes you might need a new Canbus but, you could upgrade the firmware on the Columbus for the price of a DVD which stops the Battery Drain Issue  you might still want to get the SatNav option ticked through VCDs but as said, there are plenty of members on here with VCD's that will set it for you

Thanks for the replies. I'll do some investigations into the Columbus and zenec units.

By the way, does a firmware update exist for the bolero to fix the battery drain issue?

I don't believe so, shame really

Dose the zenec come with speed cameras bluetooth and TV as standard, and whats the going rate for one

I can only speak for the Zenec NC-2010 that I've fitted in mine. but for that specific unit:

Speed Cameras - yes, and can be updated with a text file

Bluetooth - yes, comes with both internal and external microphones for handsfree calls and will stream music from your phone.

TV - no, freeview tuner is an add on box, although to be honest, there are already a *lot* of wires coming out of the back of the unit - no idea where you'd find space for the freeview box as well

Going rate for this unit new is around £800

I wasnt aware of the Columbus DVD fix. So I wouldn't have to update my canbus at all?

I have a Chinese clone in mine and it has all the bits you want on it, you do need a few adapters to get the antenna side working but once done is great

the one I have has the VW red back light but was the only one I could find that had all the bits on it I wanted if you look up es878eu on ebay you can see the spec I also fitted a reverse camera. here is a pic of it in the car

That looks pretty decent. What's it like functionality wise? Any weird glitches?

As I said you need some extras to get it to work well (mine is an 08 Octavia) so needed the Can-Bus adapter why they do not include it I do not know (extra £25) you also need the antenna feeder/adapter to power the antenna. As mine also has TMC which needs an antenna I decided the best way was to split the feed from the standard antenna so I have two boosters and a splitter cable, all works great. I have the iPod cable fed down to the ash tray (do not smoke) The reverse camera replaces one of the number plate lights, only prob with this is that on an estate in the current weather is it needs a constant wipe to keep it clean. You can get extra monitors for the headrests that can show a dvd while you are navigating though I have not done this. Sound quality is very good. I mounted the GPS antenna under the top dashboard cupboard. As I had the "stream" originally I had to get a new surround but this is only £5 from the dealer. All in all very happy with the change.

John,

which unit was this please. Also - do you have parking sensors - if so, do they still work on the unit?

Many Thanks

Nick

Yes the parking sensors still "beep" though you do lose the display but the camera does a better job of this any way. the unit is ES878 (just google it)

John

Thank you John
