Headlight brows and MOT

Featured Replies

Although I can't see them blocking any light, are they an MOT failure?

They are blocking/masking the indicator, but no clue about MOT ;)

You cant fit them to the MK2 Fabia, as they will block the front indicators which is both illegal and an instant MOT fail.

Plus they are ugly :giggle:

A picture would help.

I've seen the 'Dame Edna Everidge' type indicator surrounds, but obviously if it blocks the indicator in any way, it's a failure on the Mk2 as mentioned.

agreed

Bleurgh, foul!

These seem to be popular on Minis though which, in some ways, doesn't surprise me!

Sorry but I have to ask... why would anyone want those? - they all look really tacky to me (apologies to OP - just not to my taste)

The last one (blue ones) on 32k's post are the ones i'm referring to

1 Why are they fitted as I don't see what function they provide.

2 Why not simply remove then for the MOT then fit them after if you are that worried about them being an MOT failt.

3 Man up and take the damn things off and burn them.

Personaly I'd go for option 3 but its up to you.

According to http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_140.htm under section 'd' a reason for failure with regards an indicator is:

'obscured so that less than 50% of the lamp illuminating surface is visible from the front or rear as appropriate'

so is the blue light brow above legal?

No they cost a fortune to get and took ages to find, originally imported. I hate the bug eyed headligjhts, Mine look better in the flesh with my outline to match the bonnet, it looks oem imo.

Surely, if something needs to be removed to pass an MOT, then it should not be on the car full stop. The MOT is there to ensure safety and roadworthyness so, by bypassing the test, you are, by definition, making the car unroadworthy.

I have some similar to the ones on the first red car and as a driving instructor, they have caused no problems in driving tests, where they will refuse to take you if the car is considered unfoadworthy! Most people dont even realise they are not standard fitment. They cause no noticable difference to the output of the signal lights and I have them fitted in addition to silvertech indicator bulbs. (No horrid orange blobs)!

I have yet to undergo an MOT, but as mentioned, the car would be rejected if they were "Iffy"!

As an amendment, I would say the blue ones on the last car are MOST likely to cause offence, BUT, the indicator bulb is still clearly visible, it really only covers the "Void" on the inside of the indicator area, which just sort of magnifies or extends the effect of the signal flash... I would still think it unlikely to be a real problem but you could always ASK an MOT tester for their opinion... If they say they wouldn't penalise you for having them fitted, get the ticket there, if they would, try elsewhere. I think it would be down to the individual's own opinion as to what is correct or not. (Or even cool or not)!

Just need Rob to come in now

The MOT is not a vehicle condition report, there are plenty of things that can be dangerous on a car which would not cause it to fail. You can remove a faulty centre rear seatbelt, which if fitted will fail, but not fitted, it can't be failed.

With regard to the headlight brows, if the illuminating surfaces are not more than 50% obscured and they are visible from 20m, they should be fine.

The testers manuals are here:

http://www.transportoffice.gov.uk/crt/doitonline/bl/mottestingmanualsandguides/mottestingmanualsandguides.htm

One other reason I wouldn't want them is also the fact that you got to glue them on the headlight - in case you need to remove them I don't think you will avoid damaging the surface of the headlight.

I use double sided tape and a thin black tape for the outline/shadow.

I had a look at a Fabia headlamp yesterday, it looks to me as those last blue ones shown obscure more than 50% of the illuminating surface. I would fail them.
