Facelifted versus pre face lift

Featured Replies

In regard to the 1.8 TSI engine in the Octavia

And if we take for example :

> the 2008 1.8 TSI engine

> And then the 2011 1.8 TSI engine

Obviously the 2011 is the Face lifted model

**BUT** is the engine in the 2011 model the exact same as the engine in the 2008 model or has the 2011 engine been improved ?

Didn't even think the 1.8 tsi was available in 2008

There are a few 2008's on the web anyways for sale

The 1.8 Tsi was introduced in 2007 apparently. Not sure if there are any differences between then and now. I would imagine there would be improvements over the years

The 1.8TSI engine in facelift models has a 'tuning protected' ECU. Read the excellent explanation below by Ben at Shark Performance.

Thanks.

So from what I read, this is just an extra security measure

But at the end of the day, looks like the 2008 engine and 2011 engine are more a less the same

The 1.8 TSi is the best kept secret in the Skoda range...could not afford a FL Octavia so got a pre FL 58 Octavia Elegance 1.8 for a shade over £5K

what a lot of car for the money!

Test drove the vrs and what at the time was called the sport, respectively with 2.0l & 1.8l engines, and although I notived a big difference in oomph between the two when jumping straight from one car to the other, i'm glad I got the 1.8 now. It does seem to be a great engine.

And later finding out it had a chain instead of a cambelt was a nice bonus!

is FL not lighter than pre FL also?

I'm not sure how relevant it is to you but later models have a lower VED band (Band G versus I) so I guess they improved the economy a bit on them.

yep

Begining to think the 1.8 might be a better option for us currently low miles well under 10k a year.

The lower cost should cover the extra tax and insurance for a few years

Just need to find one as cheap as you, best so far has been an 08 40k L&K hatch at £7.5k.

there are a couple at 100k much cheaper not sure I want to go that high mileage.

The Pre FL 1.8 Tsi appears to be rare car ... I was lucky and travelled 250 miles to view, she was spot on and bought on the spot, 5K is not a lot...

LK versions seem to go for 1 grand more they do have lots of extra kit, but its the milage and condition every time?

yep

Only because they removed the spare tyre and jack as standard items, thus "saving" 20kg!

105Kg lighter so not just the wheel :giggle: added things like electric rear windows standard etc which adds weight jumbo box 18" alloys etc and still its lighter.

isn't the pre-FL 1.8 a TFSI engine?

the FL 1.8 is definately the new TSI engine.

i believe that's a major contributer to the overall weight loss.

exactly likewise probably with tdi (what i was looking at) so not just a wheel and has more extras that weigh more

so after all me posts on this forum ( sorry for driving you all mad ) , I finally and quiet suprisingly got the chance to drive a 2008 Skoda Octavia 1.8 tsi engine today

It hadnt been driven in a while and the gearbox seemed a bit stiff as in no smooth gear changes

After all the talk ive heard about the 1.8 tsi engine, to be honest, I wasnt too impressed : ( but maybe thats cause the car has not been driven in a while and seemed to be not maintaned with that really stiff gearbox and all that

I didnt find the accleration that great and the acceleartion in my Audi 2 litre diesel seems to be way better, bit sadenned really : (

As I said a hell of a lot less torque. If car say for 6 months and needed a jump start id expect it to be driving like normal after a few miles if you had a good run chances are you experienced what you'd get after it was warmed up etc. My car had to sit for 4 months last year it was started once every 4 weeks and moved around the car park it was in just to turn wheels all threw a blazing summer. I got back it was spot on drove perfectly. Stiff box I am not so sure about definitely worth getting a shot of an FL VRS TDi now too might not like the box in it either and move on to fine something totally different.

Keep us up to date on what you find get a good long run out in the VRS if you can might be worth seeing if any of the guys in the Octavia II VRS Ireland register are near you and would volunteer their services and let you have a play!

Thanks yet again Fubar for your reply. Yeah the gearbox was stiff and very tricky to put it in 3rd. Even when the car was in neutral and you tried to shake the gear stick back and over, it didn't shake freely, it was more like you had to pull it forcefully back and over.

It just didn't feel that quick at all though. I was quiet excited about getting a drive in this car after all ive read about this engine and was looking foreard to the acceleration but as I said was rather disappointed with the acceleration.

When I got back in to my Audi after driving the octy, I put the foot down and BANG, there was the power

Sadly something was wrong with that car...The 1.8 Tsi pulls from around 1500 rpm, its not the same surge as a diesel but pretty close, and smooth as silk

Go try another!

I'm hoping there was something wrong with it PC1212 ; )

There are zero facelifted 1.8 tsi's for sale in the South of Ireland !

Try and find a TDI to test drive then another 1.8. Seems diesels are the way to go in Ireland then if the only 1.8 you can find has been sat for months.....says it all really.

Think of resale....

  • Author

yeah, will try and find a TDi jrw.

and a decent 1.8 but will have to go to the North for a facelifted one to test drive.

Ireland is gone diesel mad alright in the last few years

yeah, resale might be an issue alright with the 1.8

I anticipate you pay a lot less in the first place so surely it cancels this out.

Also I appreciate you live in Southern Ireland and I`m ignorant as to the values between like for like cars, I bet the 1.8 TSI is loads less?

I paid £5199 for a 58 Reg "December 2008" Pre face lift that was in dealer condition albeit with 62K on the clock

A mate paid £7200 for a 57 Reg TDi.... so currently I have " hypothetically speaking £2000 sat in the bank

Currently the extra fuel costs on my monthly commute mean I`m eating into the £2000 at a rate of just £30 a month....we do the same mileage

Meaning in over SIX years we will have broken even.... that is if the gap stays the same... derv is getting pricier every month!

However he has the timing belt to replace and the spectre of a DMF that will go eventually.

If you want silence at the lights, in traffic and a SMOOTH surge that goes from about 2000 rpm and keeps going till 7000 rpm then this might be the car for you

In a couple of years, diesel cars might not be as attractive as they currently are , the gap is growing rapidly and is currently 40p a gallon in the UK

Of course this is only my opinion...
