help, whistling sound and mpg is down.

Featured Replies

Hi all. Had this for a while now where when I sit at around1700rpm? Just before the turbo spools it whistles. Like air is ever so slightly being sucked in/allowed to leak through. I think It's from the smic. But can't work it out. I have noticed she's drinking fuel like a bitch though but mpg is at 29ish. Any ideas?

Checked all your hoses and pipework? Does the SMIC look ok, no damage at all?

I can't hear any hissing and I haven't looked at the smic for a while. It's actually at 1300 to 1400rpm. Not before, not after. Also tonight the blooming motor failed on the left light. Brilliant

I think mine is doing the same. I hear a whislting noise when accelerating gently from about 1500rpm. Sounds like a siren or and owl. Once the revs get to about 3000rpm then it is drowned out by the more normal turbo spool up "hissing" sound.

Having searched on the internet I'm assuming that the turbo is starting to wear out.

The only bit of evidence that it may *not* be a worn turbo is that if I drive off before the 2nd air pump has stopped then the whistling noise is louder and more noticeable. So maybe some kind of air leak?

the water pump makes a similar noise when is worn

It's definietly not the water pump (on my car at least). It only happens when the turbo starts to spool. Lifting off the gas and the noise stops.

OU51: Could be your secondary air combi valve is stuck slightly open, in which case exhaust gasses are escaping through the valve and down the piping to the secondary air pump. That would be why it's louder if you try to drive when the secondary air system is still working (at that point the valve is fully open)

DBP: If it's not turbo related (which at those revs it shouldn't be) you might be able to recreate it with the car standing still if you get someone to rev it between 1300 and 1400 and have a listen to see where it's coming from. I reckon it could still be a split in one or more of the vac pipes, or possibly a leaking exhaust manifold gasket going by your drop in mpg - or as above a problem with the combi valve.

RE. the light motor, I found a thread on here the other week with a guide to stripping it down and repairing it yourself, I wish it had been on here when one of mine went as I ended up buying a new one for £29 when I could have just fixed mine:

Chaps...

Have you checked the lower intake (pancake) pipe. I have an aftermarket Neuspeed fitted, which had a dodgy bracket, until I took it off and repaired it. There is a metal circlip which connects the (pancake) pipe to the turbo intake and mine kept detaching itself slightly, pre fix. It gave a hissing sound and sometimes some boost loss which sounded like the DV was just releasing pressure on turbo spool up. Worth checking maybe?

Because i am work can't really do much. But on the way to work I tried a few things. So it appears between 1400 and i caught it around 1700 this morning. If I sit and rev it, it won't happen. It tends to only be in fourth and fifth. I noticed last night after it had warmed up that white smoke appeared whilst sat still, but I could rev through it and mine wasn't the only car doing it. I feel the power is down in second, but don't know if that's me fussing.

@ modra.... My pancake pipe fell off a while ago from its mount. Didn't detach. Just dangled. I reverse mounted the mount and thought all was fine. So that might be worth a punt again. What particularly was making the noise for you? Pipe pop off or something like that?

Thanks chaps. My secondary air pump has always made a bit of a noise when started from cold, and I got the above mentioned whistling noise. However I've only recently started noticing it happening all the time. It's a proper "whooooooooo" sound that gets higher pitched as the turbo spins up. It also sometimes lurches forward with only a little gas pressed but then the noise dies and the car hesitates a bit. Kind of like the turbo spins up but then slows down again.

The circlip would detach itself on one side, but the fairly rigid nature of the flexipipe held it in place. It would make a louder than normal hissing sound which would sounded like it was actually coming from the drivers side air vent. The APR R1 DV on mine gives quite a loud and distinct sound and it wasn't the same. When it detached, complete boost loss randomly, which prompted me to fix it. Would occurr around the engine speed you quote as the turbo began to spin up.

I was listening today and I think its is a boost leak from the smic area. Will have to look tuesday...

Noticed of recent though that if I stick it in reverse with the are lights on, when I idle the car it makes a horrible noise that you can only rev through. Almost sounds like a belt. When this happens white smoke appears. If I drive forward a couple 100 yards it goes back to normal

Also tonight it was going from 320 range to 300 range and up and down from 38mpg to 30 mpg. I thought it might be the fact I have just switched back to Vpower and the ecu hasn't quite caught up.

BTW... What pipes would I need if there is a split from the pancake pipe/smic?

Recorded the sound. What do you think it is?

DPB, when I click the link it says the video is private

There's a small pipe joining the pancake pipe to the bottom of the intercooler:

Inside the car you will need to turn the volume up! Make sure you turn the volume down when its outside otherwise it will destroy your ears.

What about from the other side of the pipe to the turbo?

Still saying it's private?

The other side of the pipe to the turbo has another silicon pipe same diameter as that one in the pic but longer and a ******* to get to unless you're right underneath the car

hopefully it works now.

What is the likely hood these pipes would of actually broken?
