help, whistling sound and mpg is down.

Featured Replies

If the pipe from the turbo to the pancake pipe had broken it would make an absolute racket. When mine came off between the pancake pipe and the intercooler it sounded like a Spitfire and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree

what would you say to the sound my car makes? Only seems to happen after the car has warmed up.

Sounds more like a belt or something slipping than air leaking. Might be worth checking your tensioner is alright, the other thing that's down in that corner is the aircon compressor and clutch

  • Author

I thought the clutch was on the left. This is the cambelt side.

Sorry I mean the clutch for the aircon compressor (the bit that always comes loose and falls off). The alternator is also around there too although if your alternator pulley was slipping you'd notice your battery wouldn't be charging properly.

With the aircon.... Des it need to be on to make that noise? Or is it all linked in? Because in that video it was off. Going down the garage in a min to try and gain some more clarity.

Been to the garage and the bloody noise stopped when I got there! I have noticed that it appears as the car is warming up. Not when It's cold and not when It's warm. Also I am having more white smoke but no water loss.

Do you get the noise only during the secondary air injection (first 90 seconds after a cold start) or after that?

  • Author

It's after that. Literally it happens just before the car is fully warm! I thought it was to do with my lights the noise because I noticed that it happened when I turned them on and off and thought it was the motor. But it's not that. Just a coincidence.

We did an aircon test at the garage and that doesn't engage the noise.

He said if it was a bearing or a tensioner I would hear it all the time. Not intermittent like I have.

Bit of a left field suggestion but could it be the charcoal cannister venting fumes? I think it vents above the offside wheel arch so around the position you described.

If it was one of the turbo hoses split then the noise would be unbearable under boost and you'd notice the change in performance, probably EML lights on too

I don't have anything like that going on. Is the white smoke significant?

Not unless you're losing loads of water

Got out there yesterday and pulled off all the front bumper and felt all around the engine bay to see if I could find anything and there was nothing!

Few things that did puzzle me though...

1) there where no screws on the underside of the bumper

2) the radiator moved. Heard this is a problem with clips breaking but I couldnt see where the clips would have been, thus not knowing exactly where to reattach it

3) I took off the pancake pipe and it was almost clean inside! in the two years of owning it I have never taken it off and I do have a OCC put I was expecting to find some horrible gloop in there?

4) My diff looked rather oily. But it was all over?

Took some photos off under the car incase anyone spots anything suspicious

Hmmm I thought we had the same problem till I herd your video But 38mpg, from a vrs? I would loveit if I got that and mine is only the 150bhp albeit 4x4. I on a good day get 32mpg but mostly sit around 24 - 28mpg so need to get this leak sorted before I run out of money. spend £30 every 3 days or so. My whistle/whoosh is there all the time under boost 2500 up ward, with ocasional jerk. cant see and splits anywhere. Still reading this with interest though as although different noises may be related.

did you ever resolve this issue DBP?

The sound went and the MPG was due to switching fuels but that is sorted now. Still have the whistle though.

Chaps...

Have you checked the lower intake (pancake) pipe. I have an aftermarket Neuspeed fitted, which had a dodgy bracket, until I took it off and repaired it. There is a metal circlip which connects the (pancake) pipe to the turbo intake and mine kept detaching itself slightly, pre fix. It gave a hissing sound and sometimes some boost loss which sounded like the DV was just releasing pressure on turbo spool up. Worth checking maybe?

Well looks like you are spot on with this, for me anyway Modra_VRS, I had a look today checked every vac pipe, striped the o/s wheel arch out to get to the pipes of the smic. and it seems it is the connection between the metal turbo pipe and the rubber 'S' bend pipe to the Pancake pipe. It is really loose with oil mist all over it. Problem is I cant work out how to remove it from the turbo pipe. Why couldn't they just have fitted a damn jubilee clip like every other pipe on the car? :wall: Also can I order just this 'S' bend pipe or do I need the turbo pipe also. here is a photo of it.(cleaned a little.)

Can't see your pic as firewall at work blocks it. The S bend pipe, which sits under the heat shield jacket, has a metal end you can't see as it is inside the turbo intake pipe. Try unbolting the pancake pipe, removing the jacket and then get a pair of needle nose pliers on the circlip. It's quite fiddly on axle stands. You should be able to buy the pipe from the stealers if needed.

cheers, yes I removed blanket/heat shield as per photo. And I bit the bullet and ordered it from stealers today £50! :@ absolute rip off. Same as ford with my last tdci it kept blowing hoses, a really common fault yet fraud charge £60 for a rubber 'S' bend. madness. if it wasn't for that stupid metal clip i would have just bought a generic silicon 's'bend for a third of the price and jubilee clipped it on. Hmmm actually if you could get one big enough to fit over the metal down pipe and a reducer at the pancake pipe end then we would have a winner I think.hmmmm  .

Phil - did this improve your mpg?

Like you, I get 32mpg but mostly sit around 24 - 28mpg - although I don't hang around - I've just got used to those figures.

I have hit 40mpg in the past!

oops sorry been away for a while. But no it helped but still there and still tracing it possibly n75 valve or diverter next.

Changed n75 now performs noticeably better but still getting shhhhhhh noise. So duno if I want to keep chuking money at it. Although . Average 32 mpg is this norm for? 1.8t 4x4

I'm surprised no-one's commented on your under car pics..

mine was like your second one,the loss of inner cv joint grease, and mine didn't have a clip on it either.

I squirted some castrol black grease in (molybdenum or something it's called), I used a flat blade screwdriver to prise a gap between rubber & shaft, then an old small plastic squeezey bottle I happened to have in the garage (which I had filled with grease, with a tube on the end).

Once a fair amount had gone in (don't think I'd lost as much as you) I put a cable tie on the end of the boot.

Rechecked a few times after & it was still losing a bit (tell tale grease spray pattern on the silver bit), so I bought some proper cv boot bands & a dedicated tool to fit them good and super tight... since then no grease loss :-)

silly me, just seen yours does have a weedy cable tie, but clearly not up to the job.....
