Bought a 03 fabic 1.4 classic for the mrs to learn in,ideal first car.picked this up for £130 so needs alittle work

Last owner said the EML was coming on while ago with a lack of power at sametime, someone looked at it for the owner with a diy fault code tool,it reported the coil pack faulty so the coil pack was replaced with a used part and it seemed to help for a short while then the EML started flashing again with a lack of power at the same time.Since then the codes havnt been read,i dont even know if ecu was reset but it could be the used coil pack had packed in again..

Ive just checked the oil and it seems like theres probaly 1-2 litre more than there should be in it!,can anyone confirm the area on dipstick that has small dots from bottom and to were it stops is the oil min/max marker??if thats the case wow, never seen so much extra oil in a car,and that would explain why it looks like oil is spraying out the dipstick.if not am i idiot lol

The last owner also said something like hot air was blowing out oil filler?

He also said there is sometimes white gunk on filler cap, thsi could be thrmostat,or lack of use or worst case headgasket right?

Hi, I've got an 02 plate 1.4 and can confirm the fine dotted portion on the dipstick denotes the low and high marks. Typically the level shouldn't exceed the point just above the high mark where the profile kinks/changes slightly. Overfilling can cause problems to the cat but it normally has to be quite excessive. We tend to have some emulsification on the filler but this is probably more related to the fact that my wife tends to do a reasonably short daily commute. Hope you can resolve other issue/s. Rob.

Cheap price so even if it's junk you can scrap it and not loose out. Now first thing to decide is how much work you are willing to do, most of the things that probably need doing are simple/cheap. The car is worth more than you paid however excessive oilin an engine can be terminal so on the basis it's been driven in this state did you notice much smoke when it's run? Before you start it up again either pump the excess out if you have a suction pump or drop the oil and refill to the correct level. Worst case scenario you drop £20 on oil/filter and a new sump washer or £35 for a fast fit place to do it for you.

Visually check the coil pack for obvious cracks/damage, it's only two allen bolts but be careful not to loose the backing plate as it can drop down. Check the plugs while the coil pack is off, a full set will cost £12 ish from your local factor if required. Next you want a £5 lead from eBay and the shareware version of vcds, register and read the fault codes. if it is the coil pack then I'd strongly suggest getting a new genuine one vs a used or compatible one.

Mayo is as you suggest either short trips so moisture isn't burnt off or oil and coolant mixing, you should have the revised HG (look for a T on the rhs of the block as you face the engine bay), check the coolant expansion tank for oil contamination (film).

Alright ive changed the oil filter and oil,

The last owner said there was white gunk on oil cap sometimes and he just whiped it off, with that i found alot of thick oily gunge in water tank and in water pipes so started to think the headgasket was gone, the car aint over heating, temp sits at half way and fan kicks in few times when idle as you would expect, theres some white smoke but it aint **** loads....i took ti to a local garage, the guy has this thing with blue liquid that tests the headgasket from water tank,if its gone the blue liquid should change colour, turns out the head gasket is ok,happy days, think ill need to find a good way of flushing out gunge from water system though, maybe the gunge is from poor serices etc?

Theres is a noise comong from either pullys or water pump(think its the water pump) is replacing the water pump easy enough on timing chain engines?

can you get the "shareware version of vcds" for free?

The HT coil pack went on my 1.4 last year, I bought a replacement from GSF. £40ish (not a genuine part- some German brand) it was a 10 minute job and has been fine since.

thanks man got a link?

done about 150 miles in it so far to see whats what, the EML came on yesterday for abit then when off when car was restarted later..if the soft ware costs to much might put it into skoda to get codes first or chance it and buy another coil pack(new) lol

Sounds like the coolant change has been neglected if it's gunk as opposed to oil, flush it/reverse flush it till it's clear, you may find that it's had some form of additive like rad-weld put in as well. Either way coolant is cheap (use G12 spec from your local motor factor) and all you need is time and a hose pipe to flush it. From the description of the smoke it's not great, considering the cost of the car and it's intended use i'd probably try a thicker weight of oil or as you've just changed it some STP stop smoke or similar to reduce oil passing through to the combustion side of things.

VCDS is about the best fault diagnosis kit you can get for VAG based cars, combined with a laptop (nothing flash) and buy a generic lead from ebay for £5 then you can use the Shareware version (free but register - again for free - to unlock more features) and read the fault codes.

Cold weather? It's almost tropical for March, even north of the border (i'm about 100 miles south of Edinburgh as I type this). Joking aside if it's just the normal condensation till the engine warms up then you're fine. As for the lead yep that and the free shareware version of VCDS (you don't have to pay the shareware fee for basic functions such as reading fault codes from memory) will be ideal for what you want.

If you join the Freedom scheme (it's a couple of quid a year) you get various discounts from suppliers, on something like a coil pack it would more than pay for itself straight away. For example yesterday I was costing up replacement wishbones, a pair from the dealer is £136+VAT at retail (the local dealer is still trying to get , my local factor £70 (even at mates rates) and ECP including 25% discount would be £46ish but they informed me at the time of the order that despite being in the picture the ball joint's weren't included so I ended up with a set for £50 elsewhere.

http://www.gsfcarparts.com/index.html that's GSF website, register and put in your reg plate and it'll show you the parts they can supply. Not the best prices for everything, but I'm sure the ht coil pack was about £45 if it's the same as mine which was probably the cheapest I'd found.

Classic trim usually had the 1.4 8v mpi (OHV) engine derived from the older Skoda's in which case that image is wrong, it should look like the one below, the image Furious links to could be for the 16v 1.4?

It is indeed. I'm barking up the wrong tree there then!

Not at all mate, ECP isn't always cheaper and sometimes the price difference can be quite significant, it's good to shop about :)

At GSF The part seems to be £71. I've found GSF and ECP to be similar prices for a lot of stuff, but you're right it's best shopping around. GSF wanted £120 for an EGR valve. Got a new one off Fleabay £70. Just hope it's alright when it's fitted!

We don't always promise to be the cheapest, but if we are ever outpriced on something, why not drop me a PM to check - who knows, you might end up helping other BriSkoda members if we are not competitive on a price!

Also, remember with 100 branches nationwide, the widest range of original and aftermarket quality parts and the 25% forum discount you don't need to shop elsewhere :)
