Winter Boots

Featured Replies

Managed to time the purchase of my 4 Seasons to more or less coincide with the end of the Dunlops life (I could have squeezed a bit more use out of them, but not much). I did encounter snow and ice over the winter (inevitable in this part of the world) and the tyres performed really well. In last weeks 20 degree plus temperatures I couldn't detect any significant drop off in performance so I'm staying with the 4 seasons over the summer and we'll see how they wear.

  • Like many of you I am pleased that the 17" Winter Contis are still on. Drove from Wales to Newbury [as the Grand Slam was being enacted a few miles away!] as howling gales and torrential [?] tropical

  • As someone else said it always snows over Easter and I've been in the Lake District over an Easter (was it 2008? Can't remember) when it did snow. So keep 'em on until then Mike.

Snow forecast here for next week. A bit of a dampener on the opening of the Floriade

Minus one here today, snow on the hills yesterday

Snow expected tonight/tomorrow up here, so my lack of time for changing this weekend has worked out.

:whew:

Rain and wintery showers expected here over the next day or so.

It has been glorious yesterday and today, but the temperature has been in the low teens.

Just back from a long weekend in the Scottish Boarders; took the wife's Fabia to give it a good run out, however I refitted the summers before we left. Glad to be home before any predicted snow, as without winters the old Fabia becomes a 'beached wale' in the white stuff. SUK and their crazy sports wheel specs again.

205/45 R16 'W' rated on a 1.2TSI 85 :swear: madness.

Finally got my Summer Tyres on at the weekend.

Did 5445 miles on my Winters this season and 8145 miles total to date. At this rate will have tread for probably 2 more winters.

Interested to note, when I was picking small stones out of the tread, that whilst the tyres have the required Tyre Wear Indicator bars to show the 1.6mm level there are some additional bars at a few points around the tread, but in one groove only, that will act as a wear indicator of 4mm tread depth; this presumably is the recommended level to change for effective winter use.

Great to feel a tightness and responsiveness back to the handling as opposed to feeling the tread blocks (of the winter tyres) squirming away to maintain grip. Mind you with the weather forecast for loads of rain this week, perhaps I ought to have kept my winters on. :giggle:

3 degrees when I left home this morning - still in the winter temperature range!

I agree; it was about 5 degrees down South early this morning but general daytime temps are (just) above 7.5 degrees; besides I wanted to get them changed.

Still got my Winters on!

Still got my Winters on!

And me! Missed my service and tyre change, so still (to quote 9,000,000,000) marshmallowing around!!

Temperatures down here have barely got much above 7 degrees all week, but not dropped below whilst I've been out in the car, so right decision just to change.

Running the 2 sets has made me more aware of what the tyres have to cope with, and don't for some reason feel as safe with summers on when temp is at 8 degrees and it is pouring down outside.

My Goodyear Vector All Seasons (or is that 4 Seasons? Never can remember and I'm *rsed if I'm going outside to look) seem to be "doing what it says on the tin". They were brilliant in the snow. Pure winters may well have been even better, but they did the job I needed ... getting me safely up and down the steep farm track to my house. It's still cold up here mornings and evenings, a little milder during the day, but even when we had that hot spell in March (which may have been all the summer we get in Yorkshire) I felt entirely secure. What most interests me now is longevity. So far 10k miles and going strong.

well, here i am, facing the western approaches here in finistere, winds projected to be up to 150km/h today, the breakers are at it well out in the bay, but as per usual, the froggie surfers are a real set of softies :giggle: , monsoon conditions for about a week, with some brighter spells, now thinking of going back to winters as the tread depths on the dunlops are getting a little low :rain:

Decided today was the day that I was fit enoiugh to change the Winter Tyres to Summers - due to reasons too long to explain I have been unable to do so previously.

Didn't take too long and marked up the Winters as to where they came from - will search ebay for a tyre tree or alternatively find a way to attach them from the garage walls!

I noticed a torx alan key in the tool kit and also a round 'springy' looking thing. I will read the handbook while waiting for a DofE group to come off the hills later this afternoon but in the meantime if anyone is in the know.........

SWMBO decided to give me a hand and I ended up having to explain what a locking nut was - the baffling thing about this is she's used them for years on other cars we've had!? :wonder:

Must admit the car looks better with alloys fitted.

Soon be time to put them back on again!!

Glad to hear you're up to this sort of job again.

(Is the DofE group kayaking down, or haven't you had as much rain as the rest of us?!)

Sadly for the last three days they've had nothing but continuous 'light to moderate' windy rain and being local to the Lakes they (DofE) tend to plan to walk the more adventurous routes!

It's a Gold Exped consisting of five lower sixth girls and today is their last day - they've had a dry day so far (fingers crossed) although it's threatened rain for most of the time!.

If they're locals they should be OK.

Reverting to thread -

There's a good pic of Yeti tools in TP's Very Useful Thread http://www.briskoda....64#entry2438064 Anything you recognise?

These look quite good - I will be ordering some soon.

Sandy /vegit8 - Look exactly like I bought at end of last year for £10 more. Excellent value especially as cover included :0)

Yep, it's to remove the steel wheel trim covers - cheers!

Had an idea it might be, but without an actual Yeti I'm at a disadvantage!

Yes, I remember those days well......... it was a trial - check out the link on my signature!

I also don't have wheel trims but may decide to purchase some when I swap the Alloyed Summer Sandals for the Steely Winter Wellies!

Coincidentally I think this was about the time of year I purchased the Winter tyres (only) even though we didn't get the car till December last year (we were expecting it a lot earlier!). I got the steel wheels at the beginning of December from the dealer at a very good price - eveywwhere else steel wheels had gone up about £20.00 (each!) due to the Winter demand for steel wheels!!

As its the height of summer it seems a good time to shop around for winter tyres and wheels.

Been quoted £45 inc VAT for the 16" steel wheels from Skoda - is this reasonable ?

205/55 16 Conti TS830P are coming in at £100 inc VAT and fitting from a local outlet with TS830 £25 more - cant work out the difference :wonder: . but £100 seems reasonable .
