Some Starting issues...

Featured Replies

Hi, i got myself a mint skoda felicia pickup, but starting sometimes takes more then 30seconds....

The engine is a 1.3 CARB not MPI.

changed the distributor cap to a new one and cleaned the carb with some carb cleaner, checked high tension leads and to me seem fine,

Found these plugs in it.. Q20PR-U - are they any good? would you recommend any other plugs that are better?

also to me it seems a bit sluggish..

i was going to check valve clearance and adjust timing next.

Thanks :)

Sheldon

Hi Sheldon

I would always use NGK plugs myself - I have had problems with every other make I've used, and never had issues with NGK.

Valve clearances are definitely next to check - they can cause all sorts of issues with the engine, and if you're trying to fault find, it's always a good idea eradicate any possible problems; I've lost count of the number of times people have told me "Well, it can't be XXX, they must be OK but I've not checked them" and then when doing it it's fixed the problem.

Hi Sheldon. Not so much start related, I've had various problems related to fast idle and stuttering/bogging out particularly under load. Apart from the usual list of suspects most of my focus has been on the air intake & throttle body. I find working through logically tends to nail the problem. I've used a range of plugs in mine and haven't had any noticeable problems? Would be interested to know what problems djaychela had with non NGK? Good luck and it would be good to see some piccys of the new acquisition. Cheers.

Thanks for your Reply guys, what NGK plugs do you recommend? I'm finding it hard to find info on-line for the Felicia pickup with a NON MPI engine...

it almost looks like its low on fuel pressure to the carb... is there some sort of non return valve in the fuel system?

didn't have chance to check valve clearance. but probably on Wednesday il start with some basic stuff. rotor arm and fuel lines (maybe they are a bit cracked)

Non-NGK plugs, all sorts of crap with them just being poor. Poor performance overall would sum it up, misfiring, fouling, insulator issues, etc. Never had a problem with an NGK plug in 25 years of messing about with bikes and cars.

Plugs, from the NGK UK site...

FELICIA 1.3 135B / MONO INJ 95 –> 02/97 BCPR5E

FELICIA 1.3 136B / MONO INJ 95 –> 02/97 BKR6E

FELICIA 1.3 135MPI / 136MPI / MPI FINE ELECTRODE 96 –> 01 BKR6EVX

FELICIA 1.3 AMG, AMH, AMJ / MPI MULTI ELECTRODE 96 –> 01 BKUR5ET-10

Given that info, I'd go on the compression ratio of yours (i.e. if it's a 135 or 136) and then pick the right one from the top 2 rows.

Why do you say it's low fuel pressure to the carb?

CHECK THE VALVE CLEARANCES. They are well known to give all sorts of issues on these engines! It's free, after all!

Cheers mate!

well i was thinking about the fuel cos the fuel filter would be almost empty after some time.. well was just a tought! i will check valve clearance. il try to find what clearance it should have.

also... i found what it looks like an OBD port under the dash!.. i think is a bit strange since my car is carb!! or skoda did even the carb once with wireing loom for the MPI?

BTW.. 135b is in the engine code? as mine finishes with 135 only.. no letters!

I don't think it'll make much difference. All the 136 carb engines listed on NGK UK's site are 136 engines (high compression), so not much help. What plugs does it have in at the moment? You may be able to cross-reference decent ones from them. I can't find any references to a Felicia carb model on any NGK site...

I'd think all Felicias probably have that wiring loom. There won't be anything else on the car that would use it, I think.

At the moment it has Q20PR-U plugs. Mine is a 135, so its a low comp engine?? :(

Yeah, 135 = low compression, 136 = high. 43kW vs 50kW, IIRC.

As for your Denso plugs, according to this page:

http://www.sparkplug...K-cross-ref.htm

BCPR6E is the way to go... assuming that they are the right ones for the engine already.
