The pikey elephant mod

Featured Replies

I've just done mine as quick bodge, just because I'm concerned at how much oil seems to be going through the air intake

That is the next job but no chance today - looks like a ballache to get the intake assembly off and mothers day isn't the best timing!

A "Ted Baker" aftershave top seem to work awesomely on the intake inlet

The intake will be smelling much better !

On the crankcake breather I've had to temporary bodge with a cut of water hose that was actually smaller and fit quite very tightly into the existing short outlet pipe.

Not ideal but I guess this will do temporarily until I get something a bit more up to the job ?

Being recycling friendly, wondering if popping down the tip if they have old heat pipe more suitable for the job rather than wasting cash.

The heater hose and a jubilee clamp is about £4 from Halfords.

Is that all ? I've got plenty of clips just couldn't find any hose around

I do apologise for my lack of knowledge on the subject but what is "the elephant mod" ? Benefits?

Is it applicable to PD engines, and if it is how could be done?

Google or search on here for those exact terms, and you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

Probably all relatively recent PDIs ?

Simply speaking, crankase breather to EGR valve to inlet manifold.

Cut that out the equation - so crankcase just vents to air and EGR is sealed to just get fresh air (no more nasty steamy oil vapour)

Thank you, I did find instruction about the whole set up but it is PDF file and is too big to attached here (4MB) if someone want to see it I could forward it using e-mail.

don't worry, it can be found here in "elephant mod" search anyway

In fact I have a history bookmarked

Read all the mod topic linked above. Will try this when get back to me car... Only question being, does the oil vapour not have cooling/lubing effects on the turbo? No extra risk to the turbo involved?

Cheers

This is exactly what I was thinking??

More so with the lubing...

Had this on my vRS for over two years with no problems. Always thought a turbo was a contained unit so any parts needing lubrication would be sealed and feed from the oil feed pipe.

Yeah I can't possibly imagine the engineers thinking as a result of the latest european legislations, you know what this is great just what we need we can get more oil to the turbo this way, all we do is take the dirty oil steam from the crankcase breather and push through the air intake where it can clog up all the intake manifold and intercooler pipes just to offer some slight lubrication to the turbo !!! You must be joking right !!! :D

Well, this is a German engine company were talking about ;-) never know lol
