door mirror unstuck

Featured Replies

Anyone had this happen? 2008 Elegance Hatch. Driving home from Oxford today I noticed the glass (NOT the bodyshell) of the driver side door mirror waggling about all over the place.

When I got home I found the glass was semi unstuck from some kind of black, thin plastic sheet underneath it - looked like it was meant to be perhaps a double sided adhesive sheet, the same size as the mirror glass. I pulled the glass off, scraped off the loose areas of black film, and re-stuck the glass with adhesive - fine now, but could have fallen off on the motorway.

Anyone else come across this?

I had the same happen to mine. I super glued it back on but it's starting to come off again. Time for some new ones I think but I want tinted ones but can't seem to fined any.

Common problem on the Octavia, you were lucky as they usually drop off and break.

Right. I stuck mine with several small blobs of Devcon epoxy (5 minute set)

Held glass in right place with masking tape till set.

Should not be affected by heating up (forgot about that!!)

The original way of fixing it now strikes me as daft.

Is yours an FL Russ

No it's a pre fl, I've found them for the mk1 and face lift but not the pre or even the polo.

Cheers for that but it's abit far to pick them up lol. I wanted blue ones really, where did you get yours from?

I superglued my drivers mirror back on. It seems to have affected the heating function a bit since it now takes far longer than the other mirror to defrost / demist.

I stuck mine with small isolated blobs of epoxy so in theory the heating should be not much affected. I'd like though to know what that thin black film is meant to be and why it doesn't work.

It appears to be a most common problem on the Octavia (and, presumably the VW Polo which uses the same mirrors).

Upon the recommendation of a nice chappie at Skoda I used some of that very grippy mesh stuff which is meant for sticking carpets down & it worked a treat.

It's also quite thin so didn't seem to affect the heating function so far as I could tell either.

Don't suppose you know the part numbers for the tinted ones?

1Z2857522H AND 1Z2857521H £43.44 PLUS VAT EACH THESE ARE THE BLUE ONES

Would this be covered under warranty or is it just wear and tear?

Mine has just started to wobble now :(

Can't be wear and tear - there's nothing to wear and tear!

it is just bad design, possibly not suited to the heating, though when it happened it had not been heated for quite some time.

I still can't work out what the original fixing method is. Seems most likely to be some kind of double sided adhesive material.

Seemed to me as if the adhesive between the glass and the black film had broken down, but not between the film and the metal backing plate.

Anyway, the Dev-con holds it very firmly and seems not to affect any aspect of its operation.

Does that mean it could be covered by warranty? Not keen on doing this myself in case I break it as I'm not the handiest person ever.

If not how does the mirror come off? do you just pull the glass off or does the whole mirror housing come off too?

thanks

Angle the mirror glass all the way down. This then provides just enough room to get your finger tips behind it along the top.

Then just gently pull it off as squarely as possible (put a pillow down by your feet too in case you pull so hard that the electrical wires detach too :giggle: )

This is what they look like from behind so you can see how its clipped on and where to apply the pressure...

Not sure we are on the same theme here. On mine, it was only the layer of glass that came loose. I fixed it back to the metal plate, which was still correctly fitted.
