Restoring rubstrips

Featured Replies

my rubstrips are so grey the almost look white in places lol. ive tried all sorts of trim restorers even meguires but it just puts abit of shine on it, if you are next to the car you can see that its just a bit of an overcoat and not resored it. i think its going to last no more than a week

anyone know of a good product to bring them back to a deep black and will last

Paint.

I keep hearing good things about auto finesse revive. Not used it myself but do plan on buying some soon after seeing the trim finish it gave a mates 23 year old golf gti

Black Wow. Check out my review thread a little further down in this topic

I'd go with G- Techniq C4 due to its durability.......;)

Doesn't WD40 restore trim too??

Barely worked on my rub strips, worked on all the other exterior trim though.

I used to use Meguiars vinyl and rubber care on mine. Or Peanut oil works just as well. Only problem is you have to do it every couple of weeks as it just fades again.

I've heard people have had some success in the past with a hot glue gun, and applying a layer of 303 Aerospace protectant over the top of whatever vinyl restorer they've applied to stop the sun ruining it again.

I'd suggest C4 aswell, not tried it myself but have used their products.

Failing that something like Chemical Guys New Look Trim Gel which offers good VFM.

Aerospace 303 is another good one - actually coated my grille with it at the weekend.

Did you clean them propoerly with IPA before applying?

No, snow foamed and scrubbed clean. Problem seemed to be the small bumps on them, couldn't seem to get enough of the C4 on. Did them twice and while it did work it wasn't as effective as on the rest of the exterior trim.

Good chance that while you may have scrubbed them clean the surface wasn't prepped well enough for it to bond........... :|

Possibly but I think unlikely. Worked everywhere else.

in the past when i drove a mk3 astra with huge black trimmed bumpers i used a heatgun occasionaly on the black plastic thats all bumpy. It melts the top layer and leaves them literally looking new. If you are brave enough to do that i would then apply a layer of some sealent over the top to keep your hard work looking good. PS do this at your own risk!

Odd as this may sound .... buy some cheap SMOOTH peanut butter, get the jar warm and rub a little on, lick buff off the excess

This does indeed work, durability isn't great but the crunchy version makes it more fun.............

If by rubstrips you mean bumper type things the peanut butter does indeed work well, had an ex who used it on his Nissan, lasted and didn't come off in the rain either, I think it's something to do with the oil in it

black and decker heat gun waft over quickly and they go black did it on an old corsa full plastic wheel arch thing was really bad just dont hold in same place for too long or its gets a bit sticky last for a long time too tried all the cleaning type things for trim none last as long

thanks for all the info. lovin the peanut butter one!! haha that could be interesting if i did them before going to a zoo

are the rubstrips clipped on or use sticky stuff? wondering about removing them, giving them a rub up and spray them a nice glossy black

Sticky stuff by all accounts.

I've asked about taking them off to be painted but was told by this knowledgable lot that they would need replacing if you take them off, son left mine alone.... So far!
