Screeching sound when steering is in full lock

Featured Replies

Pretty much as the title says, I get a screeching sound whenever i put the steering into full lock (both right and left) was wondering if anyone could shed any light as to why this is? The sound persists until I turn the steering away. Any help would be appreciated :)

The belt that drives the power steering pump is slipping because at each end of the rack the PS pump is at its maximum level of output placing a large load on the belt.

Hydraulic power steering system on the Superb is very high pressure, and can make noise in full lock, this is mentioned in user manual.

It is to some extent normal, though it is worth double checking steering fluid level. My Superb used under 100ml of steering fluid over 6 years. It makes the sound very occassionally.

Generally, holding full lock for a long time (more than a few seconds) is bad for the steering pump, and should be avoided.

It would also be worth checking the alternator pulley is free wheeling one way as it should. When they seize up they aux jumps around more than it should and can become noisy.

Put some talc on the belt, if it stops doing it it's the belt or tensioner or both, if it's only on hard stationary lock I wouldn't worry about it, just take smaller turning circles in future.

Had exactly the same on my octavia , and it was the Alternator , pulley only a £25 job for the octy.
