Got a quote for Dunlop Summers to put on to replace the Winter 17" Contis....

... ... ...£255 per tyre.

Pass the smelling salts. That's DOUBLE the cost of the same tyre a year and 18000 miles ago. I'm gonna stay at home.

Shocking - you should shop around - assuming the tires required are 225/50/17, I saw some Kumho for 90 quid each.

What exactly is that price for? I'd be buying some Michelin Pilot Sport 3's for a heck of a lot cheaper than that and they will be far superior in probably every way!

Tried blackcircles?

It pays to shop around,

Try blackcircles.com they quoted me £140 each fitted n balanced (Dunlop SP1 225 50 17)

Shop around? Yep, sure am and will now and forever even if the phone bill is up in the hundreds.

However - a very slight catch. This price is from the Dealer who has always been extremely competitive on tyres, and if ever I have needed tyres they ended up with the job.

This time - and herein lies the sting - they have two of last years still-serviceable Dunlops that they have been faithfully hoarding for me until the change back again. I can't put on two new summers from somewhere else, and trog down to them with two winters and two summers on! It has become a delicate situation!

Why pay £255 for one tyre when you can quite easily get 2 for the same price, beats me.

Have you mentioned that the price they are quoting is ridiculous? If u have always gone there maybe they will do a better deal, if not then they can't say that you haven't been loyal, perhaps you could buy the tires at a cheaper cost and pay them to fit them, they still make money, and it saves you the awkardness

Of course you can! You can say to them that you'd like to give them your business, but if they can't match a more competitive price. I've just done a quick websearch and National have the same tyre at £223 if you're buying 2 or more.

try my tyres(google search) they bhad some at about £140 each a couiple of nweeks ago!

Yebbut, Bobdog, it will affect the Haldex! The handbook (which is my bedtime reading still, after two years ownership) is explicit about mix and match with tyres.

I think.

George, me ol' mucker, me ol' mate. Have a think about UniRoyal Rainsports. Seem to come recommended very often and with your terrain they might be better suited as they excel in slippy conditions. Check their reviews online (Uniroyal is part of Continental). I looked on Oponeo, where I bought my All Season tyres for the Hyundai. The Rainsports are £125 deivered + fitting (about a tenner at a local tyre place). Or Falken 912 or 3 have always been recommended on enthusiasts forums - £96 with the same delivery/fitting...or the OE Goodyears at £129 and the Dunlops at £138. I found Oponeo very good throughout the deal - the're In Poland and have Warehouses all over Europe and the delightful lady on reception speaks perfect English - in fact better than.....someone who doesn't speak very good English.

Look also at MyTyres. They deliver and you fit locally. And Camskill is, as noted, well thought of.

I'm sure you have looked at Blackcircles' current quote of £147.91 fitted, per corner, for the Dunlops. Could you at least use this as a bit of a lever on your local chap, and keep the goodwill?

(I am a fan of Blackcircles!)

Not suggesting you should mix the tyres - just look for a cheaper source for the Dunlops and ask your local dealer to match the price or lose the business.

Hi guys

Thanks for the ideas. The more I think about it the more I reckon that he has made a mistake and that the figure quoted was for the TWO tyres I need. That would bring it into line with what you chaps have been finding, and where they managed to undercut to last year.

You know who will be getting a phone call first thing tomorrow? I'll let you know what happens! And as Bobdog commented quite rightly, a bit of financial pressure can work wonders cos it's better to make a fiver than nowt.

How many miles have you done!

My Dunlop rears are on 35k and just down to 4mm so time to replace sometime soon.

My front Dunlops were replaced at 17k with Kumho k39s they have done another 18k so are due as well.

4 Kumhos will cost £104 each from event tyres fitted at your home.

Dunlops SP01 are £148 each

Yup, I'm betting they've made a mistake also. Good luck with it.

I'm very pleased with the Kumho's and getting the same mileage.

The problem with a lot of these "fit-at-home" people is they won't come out to the sticks! *

I just get a quote from Blackcircles and then see what their local fitter will do. So far he has always undercut them.

* If they can't find my town they would NEVER find George's little cwtch of cottages!!

I had fun with the tyres when I changed mine. Looks like some places mix up run flats used on bmw's with non run flats used on Yeti's and others. About 90pounds more than normal ones.

You would really hope the skoda dealer would know it doesn't use the run flat version of the Dunlop tyre but that is a possibility i guess.

Ah fair point. I've had them fit tyres at work as well as home.

I would imagine they would travel for two or more tyres but there must be limits.

I think you can check on the website by putting in a postcode.

Got to the bottom of it. The Sinclair Group changed their tyre supplier since I had mine there at a competitive rate last year, and now, despite the fact that they will lose the sale of two premium tyres, and the next two too, there was nothing that the Skoda branch could do for me. So be it.

Then I got to thinking - dangerous, I know - if I bought the two cheapest I can find (£60, delivered - from Oponeo [thanks Stan]) at a cost of £120, then even if I only get 2/3rds of the mileage out of them I'd still be quids in, I think?

Is anyone else running on so-called "budget" tyres? If so, how are you getting on? I notice that one or two are on Kumho tyres, and their price is reasonable. It also appears that the Polish tyre company Oponeo is the best value.

Oh - and in response to BobDog's comment about mixed tyres - I hadn't got it quite right!! You CAN mix tyres, so long as the same tyres are on the same axle - i.e. Dunlops on the front and SkidMarks on the rear.

I see your thinking regarding running cheap tyres but surely it boils down to more than just how cheap can I get away with over a period of time? Noise, harshness, wet and dry straight line traction, turn in, ultimate grip when cornering, ability to avoid aquaplaning etc all will surely suffer compared to premium tyres? Having said that, I guess a lot of it comes down to what you expectant how you drive the vehicle in question; certainly, be able to halve the cost of rubber on the wheels is appealing! From experience, Kumho's tend to be indifferent depending on the exact model and I've had good experiences of Falkens 912's but I'm not sure what they retail at nowadays. My favourite ones currently are Uniroyal Rainsport 2's, vredestein Sessanta's and ultimately Michelin PS3's at the top end. :-)

I used etyres last year http://www.etyres.co.uk/ and got a good deal. The fitter arrived at the appointed time and was very professional.
