Scored Camshaft, My vRS

Featured Replies

Hi, so some you of may know I have a problem with my recently acquired Octavia vRS.

It turns out that according to Skoda Arnold Clark Technicians up here in Inverness I have a knock coming from inside the engine which has scored the camshaft and camshaft followers. They have confirmed this with Milton Keynes Skoda technical I believe.

This car has had one owner from new and has been serviced by the one same (Skoda) garage its entire life, all recalls have been carried out, not one stamp is missing and all are one time. I bought it from the garage who did its first PDI back in 2006.

I also received a Skoda Used car Warranty because the car was less then 6 years old and had less the 72K on the clock.

I bought the car trusting the engine noise is as it should be so did not raise any question of concern. Only when I started to worry myself did I decide to get it checked out. (who here doesnt trust a Main dealer selling a second hand car to be faulty)

Because the fault was there when the car was sold my warranty is void so my only chances of getting it fixed is through the garage that are apparently competent to service it its whole life!!!

To be honest I want my money back, I dont want that garage to touch it and give it back to me. Engines of this caliber and age/mileage/service history should not have this problem.

I have spoken to Skoda UK and expressed my concerns and they are being very helpful.

However when dealing with the principal manager and anybody else for the matter at Skoda West End Garage in Broxburn none of them seem very interested at all in understanding the severity of the problem. They will be getting a letter of rejection shortly.

This is my first dealing with a main dealer, im 24 and this is my third and most expensive car and truly believe I have done nothing wrong to deserve to be in this situation. I find it absolutely baffling to find my Skoda sold by a Skoda dealer with a full Skoda history (by the same garage its whole life) and a Skoda warranty to be a lemon!

Yours is a very sad and annoying tale...I personally never trust dealers or warranties for that fact .

Good luck, take them to the small claims court!

No need for the small claims court if its within 6 months, simply mention it to West end you are rejecting the car, send a letter recorded, speak to VW finance (i think that's who you are with) and speak to someone at Skoda uk.

To be sold a car by the original selling dealer and original servicing dealer and for it to be a lemon isn't a first, our car was sold by Border Skoda and serviced by Border Skoda and it is also a complete lemon mate, currently in a legal case with Skoda UK, VW finance are also involved, CAB and Trading standards are involved too.

I have a few friends who work for car magazines and I'm sorely tempted to have them write an article about Skoda's cars and customer services.

I bought the car outright! no finance.

I have already told the principal manager I will be rejecting the car, he told me I cant do that unless there is a fault with it, Clearly there is a fault, however he wants to carry out his own diagnostics to confirm what Arnold Clark have already done.

Ahh apology's

I would go through them like a ton of bricks mate.

Good luck... I will follow your story with interest...I will NEVER buy from a dealer again.... sure they offer "a" warranty but I have heard so many stories of them wriggling out of absolutely anythin, is it actually worth the paper it is written on?...took my chance and bought from "Car Giant" with the 6 months sale of goods act as protection.

At least if anything goes wrong I have saved a few £££ before I end up arguing with them to put it right?

Skoda website offers a 30 day/1000 mile exchange policy on approved used cars... Does this apply?

Yes but the car has to have a fault according to the dealer I bought it from.

Ill be talking with SUK to confirm as I havent even done 500 miles since I have bought the car a week and a half ago, its now sitting in my drive not in use, a little inconvenient to say the least.

Then that is something at least... Glad SUK are being helpful (didn't really give me straight answers to memory seats and folding mirrors :() - I'm just a little stunned that the supplying dealer is being so obtuse:

You've identified a problem

Your nearest 'official' dealer has confirmed this

It's less than 2 weeks old

Your supplying dealer (who is over 100 miles away) refuses to acknowledge the other dealer's diagnosis?

The supplying dealer should be falling over itself to rectify this!

Surely SUK should phone West Lothian and remind them of their obligations to the customer as they're contractually obliged by the dealer franchise thingy!?

Mine (DMK Leeds) have been nothing but helpful so far for a couple of minor things (long may that continue).

Hope you get it sorted to your liking soon!

Hope you get it sorted and the dealership that sold you the car honour the warranty. It's unfortunate that your local dealer is an Arnold clark garage though, I wouldn't trust them to look at a lawnmower engine never mind a car engine. He has recently added a skoda section to his VW/seat dealership in paisley and the so-called master tech there is totally incompetent.

There shouldnt be any problems with this, the garage should recover your car,fix it properly, give you a loan car whilst its been fixed & return it to you valeted! I cant believe you are getting treated like this, you have only just bought the car......me id go to the dealer you bought it from with the car on a recovery truck, walk in & create hell in the showroom until they either gave me a full refund or i selected another vrs from their stock as a replacement!

No! Your dealer is wrong. The requirement for a fault to be present is only for a replacement vehicle supplied under the 30 day exchange sheme - to stop people changing their car every 30 days.

Terms and conditions here

The Replacement vehicle may be replaced within 30 days of the delivery date of the replacement vehicle provided that:

a. The Customer has reasonable cause to be dissatisfied with the quality or reliability of the replacement vehicle.

b. The Škoda Approved Used Vehicle Retailer has been given fair and reasonable opportunity to rectify any faults or defects which affect the quality or reliability of the Replacement Vehicle, and has failed to rectify those faults to a reasonable standard.

c. If a further vehicle is required to be replaced under this scheme, the terms and conditions as set out above will apply to the subsequent exchange.

On PD engines (which yours isnt according to your sig) scored camshafts were due to incorrect spec oil being used.

Do you know where the scoring is?

On early Mk5 GTIs, there is a known problem with the HPFP follower wearing through and damaging the 'softer' rev A camshaft. Later cars had the 'harder' rev B camshaft fitted.
