Featured Replies

hi all firstly im new to here so be nice lol

ok so baught a skoda fabia 1.9 sdi was going cheap so it has a few problems witch im hoping to tackle myself with the help of you guys its coverd 100k and its a 2002

so basicly the abs light stays on on the dash had a little search around cant find to much info as to what it could be

the car was sat for around 5 months tyres had gone flat and the car needed a good tug with my jeep to free the brakes

so do you think this could be the reason of the light constantly on

looked under bonet no blown fuses or bulbs

also the brake pedal is kinda solid with no real brakeing power? (read anoter post saying could be vac hose split but mine dont seem to be)

any help would be great also anyone got a work manual they could send me a link for or email me one [email protected]

thanks in advanced all hope to speek soon also if anyone wants any pics let me know ill get whatevers asked for up

stephen

Strip the brakes down, pads out at the front and make sure the carriers are sliding free. Drums at the rear I guess, so drums off and make sure the shoes move freely and the auto adjusters are working. The braking power should increase.

The abs light could be one of the wheel sensors, dirt corrosion etc.

There is an ABS sensor on the front wheel ( I think it was driver side) in a few words, it is a sensor that "beam" a signal to a reluctor ring. If a link in the ring is broken ABS light is on, if the sensor is buggered ABS light is on. Start with this and see how you go from there.

thanks for the quick responce guys and the welcome

i have orderd a new set of pads and disks and shoes for the back so when i change these ill check the callipers and sensors one thisgs for sure it al looks rusty and dirty thats for sure

if the calipers are nackerd stuck pistons and such il just replace the calipers but as its abs and has a pump would i have to bleed it a special way or the good old way (thats if i have to go as far as replacein the calipers)

thanks for the replys thumbs up

ABS is electronic, not mechanical so you shouldn't have any issue bleeding them.

Don't get air in the ABS block, otherwise you'll need diagnostic equipment to bleed them. Get it plugged in and get any fault codes from the ABS.

ye luckaly i have a mate with a snapon odb diag thing i migt give him a call see if hes free

The ABS light can be caused by a dirty reluctor ring or sensor on any wheel, use a cotton bud dipped in methylated spirits and carefully wipe completely around each ring and the sensor head.

I did this after a rear wheel cylinder leaked and left brake fluid on the reluctor ring which then attracted brake dust to foul up the abs signal.

Good luck.

so is there sensors on all 4 wheels then i assumed it was only the front 2?

and ill check them all when i do my disk pad and shoe change (when they arive) bloody bnk hols

I am almost sure that there is only one sensor, but I could be wrong. I am sure someone will chime in to confirm or not this.

All four.

Double check the fuses under bonnet, look closely at the silver ones that are bolt in, they tend to get hairline crack. Other than that i'd get the codes read..

Ye all fuses are fine checked them the other day but as soon as my parts arive il be checking the speed sensors all round and cleaning and inspecting everything.

As sead in my first message my brakes pedal is solid but with no braking force what cluld that be down to

This is most likely to be down to the mechanical stiffness of the calipers & rear shoes or glazed pads / discs. This is why I suggested stripping them down and checking everything is moving freely.
