Plastidiped my Spolier

Featured Replies

So, as with pretty much all Fabia vRS, the lacquer on my spolier was peeling off.

It looked a right mess and I'd had enough of it.

Ever the "DIY bodger" I thought I'd have a go at sorting it out myself, rather than paying to have it resprayed.

I've seen Rob's wrapped in vinyl, and although it looks alright, it's very difficult to wrap without getting creases somewhere.

Discovered plastidip. Sprays on, and if it goes wrong or you want to change it, you can just peel it right off and start again.

With a day off work, I thought I'd tackle it.

This is what it looks like to begin with

Started to sand off the loose lacquer so that it has a better chance of sticking and wasn't going to peel from underneath once I'd sprayed it

Gave it a good wipe down with isopropanol to get rid of any sanding dust and residue, then masked it up. Now at this point, I should have masked up the roof a bit more, but as it was plastdip and not just paint, any excess will just come off with a cloth and a clean.

First coat goes on.

Not bad really.

Left it to dry for a bit, and second coat goes on. During this, the nozzle became a bit clogged up while I was spraying, and it left a big lump on the right corner. Looking a bit orange peely, but at this point, I can't go back as I haven't got enough paint left to start again :(

Again, left it for a while and stuck the third coat on. It's sort of covered the big lump, but it's not perfect.

Left this to dry, then peeled off all of the masking tape. While doing this, on the left side, it peeled up a little corner of the plastidip, so I now have a loose corner :(

End result... well.... it's not perfect, but it's miles better than it was before, and will do for now. when I have the time again, I'll peel it off and do it all again, but this was my first time using Plastidip and it's not gone too badly :)

Good effort there gives it the older style car spoiler look of Matt rubber

Doesnt look too bad in my eyes hell of a lot better than how it started out.

Im thinking of doing my chrome grill in plastidip to tie in with the red/black theme Ive got going on

I'd just worry about it rubbing on the aerial when you open the boot

yeah I'm sure it will be fine, but if not I can just peel it off and get it painted properly

where did you buy the plasti dip from?

Nice attempt Sam, I've really got to do something with mine now. It's a freaking abortion!!

My lacquer starting to go :(

As the song goes.. I got it on Ebay :)

That looks pretty damn good! I'm already looking into getting some of that stuff for my grille, might have to buy enough for the spoiler too, mine is fading at a different rate to the rest of the car (plastic vs metal I guess) so I reckon a nice matt/rubber black would look good. Not sure it'd work having my roof gloss black but it's worth a try and can always come off if necessary.

Another method could be to sand back the lacquer using a fine grade wet/dry taking care not to damage the base coat, and then re apply fresh lacquer over the spoiler.

Good effort, looks way better than it did before thats for sure.

Cans can be far from ideal, I think its a good idea to give them as much distance as possible to avoid that kind of dropping effect (unfortunately this does mean more masking though)

Problem with that is the lacquer had been peeling off for so long, the base coat was knackered already.

Nice one Sam.. looking forward to seeing it at the next meet... Need to do something with mine at some point. I've always liked the sport spoiler over the vRS ones... so if I ever seen one cheap I might get it painted up and stick it on... hmmmmm..

Given any thought to getting another can for a couple more coats of plasti?

Cheers Rob.

Yeah I might do. See how it looks in a few days then decide what to do.

I might even go for a different colour

I remember reading this last year but had forgotten all about it when i started thinking about plasti-dipping my spoiler recently.

Nearly a year on, how has the plasti-dip stood up to the weather???

Still looks the same as the day I did it.

I'm surprised it's lasted so well :)

What happens if you lacquer plastidip would it give it a bit of a shine? I saw someone lacquer a car they rattle canned matt black and it looked alright to be fair
