I've read a few articles regarding the new EA288 Diesel engines being released by the VW group this year, or maybe next. Would you be interested in something between the current 170PS Diesel engine and the 260PS 3.6 petrol? For me, something around 210-220 PS with a DSG gearbox would be perfect, especially as I am looking to replace my current 170 DSG next year. Add start/stop (although it would never be used as I'm always on the motorway - hello government!) and I would be completely sold.

According to what I've read, the 2 litre will be around 190bhp and 280 lbft - but with significant efficiency gains, although numbers aren't being quoted.

Best feature to have on a new engine would be to replace the belt camshaft drive with a timing chain, IMO.

I'll just get the ECU fettled on the existing car and keep it for several years to average out the depreciation. Understand that'll be about 200PS, which will be fine. 4 x 4 would be nice though on an eventual replacement, especially if that does have 220ps.Once upon a time, in my lifetime, a Triumph 2000 with a 2.0 litre 6 cylinder petrol engine with 90bhp was a quick luxury car. Thank goodness we've come so far.

Hope not ... Those chains are often changed around 200.000 miles in other cars and it cost a fortune to replace (just ask BMW 5 owners). + the chain drive is much more noisy than the rubber belt.

The 3 litre turbo diesel from the Audis would be nice. Quicker performance than the V6 and better fuel economy than the 2.0 CR. It's pretty much all the engine you'll ever need

Have you got that the right way round? ;-)

An Audi A5 weighing approx 1650Kg with the 3.0 TDi will do 0-60 in 5.9 seconds and combined economy 49 MPG. I'll rephrase, better performance, similar economy :p

Better performance but thirties to the gallon. they have the MPG of a 4cy petrol.

Not according to the magazines that test fuel economy

Don't believe what you read when it comes to fuel economy. The 6cyl diesels do thirties to the gallon. I have a friend who has one.

It makes sense when you think about it logically. They have 50% more cylinders so therefor they are never going to be more efficient or as efficient as a 4 cylinder derv.

Please don't buy one expecting 49mpg, you will be gutted. However the performance is breathtaking.

It depends how you drive the thing. Before I had my Mk2 2.0 CR Elegance 4x4 I had a Mk1 Elegance 2.5TDi. I covered ~90k miles in it, mostly on motorways. If I stayed in the 65 to 70 mph speed range I could achieve between 48 and 52 genuine mpg (the higher figure was with air con turned off). Increasing the cruising speed to 75 to 80 mph hit consumption by about 15%. My Mk2 4x4 170 CR TDi does pretty much the same mpg overall, though granted, there is a penalty from having 4x4.

The V6 tdi will never fit a Golf V plattform as it is mounted lengthwise.

There are two different versions, the first (as in my A6) with 204, 224 and 233 hp and the newer with 240 hp.

Latest is more economically as mated to a longer end drive (with the 6 speed auto/manual).

And dont forget the weight of the car. An A6 is more likely to weigh 1950kg or even more with options!

(and dont compare my mpg as I am driving in Germany. Means a lot faster than you will be able to do)

A 1.9 130 CR for taxi work would be nice fitted to the superb and Octy
