Panasonic Viera Plasma TV

Featured Replies

I have a Panasonic Viera TX-P42UT30B and connected my 3 year old LG DVD player to the TV with agood quality HDMI lead but cannot get any sound. I previously had the dvd player attatched to my Sony LCD TV with the same HDMI lead and had no problems.

Any idea's anybody.

check it does not think it is a home cinema system as it will turn off the internal speakers

Nope it aint that, Panasonic helpline are no feckin use :(

Had a similar thing with my Samsung TV and Samsung blue ray home cinema doo-dah

Although I connected with a HDMI cable and had all the right things setup in the menus, no sound !

In the end I connected the audi out - audio in with one of those OPTICAL cables and it worked immediately without changing anything.

Check it out again with another lead. Although the one your using is good and worked before, HDMI leads are sometimes temperamental so best to rule this one out. Do you have 2 HDMI inputs on the TV ? worth trying the other one.

It's going to be a process of elimination. Sounds silly, but even the DVD player has to be checked with another TV to rule that out. Infuriating I know, but worth it in the end.

Check what settings your DVD player is outputting for sound. it may be set to bitstream an audio format that the TV cannot understand. (DD5.1) - most DVD players have internal stuff that can downsample to stereo.

Have tried it with 2 different HDMI leads, they both work perfectly on my sony tv with the xbox 360. TV has 3 HDMI ports have tried all 3.

Have tried every setting possible on both tv and DVD player

Hmmm, what other common connections have you got on the TV and DVD player? I would try connecting via another method, just to rule out an internal issue with the DVD player.

Also, what HDMI standard did the TV you've success with use? This model of Viera is HDMI 1.4, so it might be that you need a newer/better HDMI cable for it to work successfully. In theory, your existing cable should be fine, but as said already - sometimes these things are slightly temperamental and don't quite work as planned :)

I pretty much agree with Wardy, but it's almost certainly the wrong cable you are using. There are now many differing HDMI cable standards now and you must use the right one for compatibility with sound, 3d etc etc. So although your existing cable has been fine, you probably need to update the cable to the latest version to be sure you've got everything covered. I've heard of this happening many time with others and a new cable has solved the problem. One other thing. The HDMI ports on your tv are probably configured to different standards. My Panasonic Plasma has HDMI 1,3 & 1.4 standard ports. Make sure you are using the right one. Maybe even switching ports will do the trick with your existing cable. Otherwise change that cable.

And PLEASE dont spend a fortune on a HDMI cable... DO NOT go to Richer Sounds for it.

Just go to asda/tesco and grab a smart price one for a couple of quid.. it makes no difference to a digital signal :)

+1.

I got a couple from a trusted eBay seller for a few quid each. Well made, work faultlessly and the AV quality is excellent

What HDMI port are you using?

I have a Panasonic Viera and I'm sure that HDMI2 does something odd where you dont get sound.. have you tried different HDMI sockets on the TV?

This is going to be difficult to explain but i'll try anyway.

I had the same problem on my Panasonic TV once. We had guest over one weekend and once they had left I noticed when I played my DVD player there was no sound on the AV channel. There was a picture but no sound. Everything else worked fine including normal TV and Sky.

I changed every lead, reset the DVD player, retuned the TV. I literally trie everything including connecting a different DVD player.

In the end I accepted there was something wrong with the TV and would have to live with it until I got a new TV.

As you know if you have a panasonic they arent that user friendly when switching to a different AV channel. Well by accident I found out there was a kind of half AV channel. (I told you it was going to be difficult to explain). Basically you select the AV channel you want but then press the corresponding button (or colour) again for the same AV channel and hey presto my sound worked again. I fond this out by accident and i've never tested it on another Panasonic and it might be because my TV's a few yesr old (over 5 years) but you could try it if all else has failed.

I hope it makes enough sense. Goo luck.

I am using a brand new (expensive) HDMI lead and have tried all 3 HDMI ports . Both the new HDMI lead and old HDMI lead work perfectly on my sony tv.

I have now given up with the HDMI connection and bought a component lead and i run it perfectly via AV1 channel. Am still annoyed that i cannot use the dvd player on my new TV via HDMI. :(

Very strange.

Still, component will give you a very good output so I wouldn't get too hung up on it. Can fully understand why it's frustrating though, when there seems no logic explanation to it not working....

I did this too, but outputting the signal from the PC suffered from terrible horizontal sync lines.........switched to a marginally more expensive cable.....faultless.

I figured it's a sheilding issue (lack of) on the fleabay special.

But I wouldn't go to any of the electrical goods retailers for an HDMI cable as they're ridiculously overpriced.

Yep, it is slightly more risky following this route, I'll admit. And I don't usually do it with interconnects, I usually goto Richer. But with HDMI leads at least, they seem to have jumped on the bandwagon of 'up-pricing' these to some degree!

But I did find a seller who had many positives comments about their HDMI cables, included those who commented about image & sound quality.

Just feckin annoying - apparently it is not an isolated incident with Panasonic "Smart" TV's - should have read more reviews before buying it. But it really is a damn good TV.

But thankyou to everybody for their help and advice ( even though it was generally ineffective :D ) CHEERS !!!
