sump removal 1.9tdi

Featured Replies

hi all,

im really hoping someone can shed a bit of light on this- can the sump be removed without removing the gearbox on the 1.9tdi 110bhp?

ive removed all the bolts, including the two recessed ones at the gearbox end and it wont budge- movement at the crank pulley end, but something seems to be holding it at the gearbox matting flange.. is there dowels? extra hidden sneaky bolts? or am i just missing something obvious?

this is 'sposed to be a simple head back on, timing belt kit and turbo refit and it just seems to be spiralling out of control :(

any help would be appreciated and hopefully stop me cursing and swearing on the drive and upsetting the neighbours! cheers, steve

im sure it comes off pretty easy once the bolts are removed, a gentle tap with a mallet should break the seal.

yes it comes off easily, there are 4 bolts that are a fiddly behind the flywheel that need a bit of patience and the right wobbly 1/4 extension bar to fit perfectly.

four bolts?? i could only see two.. that will explain quite a bit..

i feel like an idiot.. lol i found the sneaky two bolts- i couldnt see them earlier- they are covered in a build up of oil/dirt.. many, many thanks joeboy for helping me out with that one :) sump off and ready for cleaning.. and remove and check oil pump :)

Don't forget the pick up pipe lol

Be very careful when replacing those hidden bolts. I lost one in the recesses and had to sacrifice it. Not ideal, but it works.

I lost one of the bolts when putting it back together when it dropped off the socket. I had to fish around for ages with my magnet on a stick to locate it. I wasnt prepared to just leave it loose after all my hard work in case the flywheel whipped it up and rammed it through the sump or even worse. it worked out all good in the end with a little patience.

My mechanic was cursing me today for getting him to do my oil pick up pipe lol

Should of heard him when he realised where the Thermostat is! lol

sump off, oil pump stripped + cleaned :) oil pick-up was absolutely covered in cack- soaked in diesel overnight- now strainer is clean and visible :) any thoughts on how much play the drive-chain should have? :S now in the process of rebuilding the turbo using the overhaul kit.. cant remember which way the big dished washer goes :( worked out it goes on the exhaust side.. but not sure dished in or out.. that'll teach me to strip it down and not make notes.. :(

got the feeling that this is gonna be a big, big learning curve! lol

mmm, you are the first person to report a dirty oil pickup pipe on a diesel I think..... Certainly is not as common as as on the 1.8Ts.

Mine is just overdue an oil change, so maybe I should drop off the sump and do that as well....
