VRS - Quantum Platinum vs Longlife III

Featured Replies

Alright guys,

The vRS is due an oil change soon. Last year my mechanic used Comma 5w30 "Profile" fully synth in it, its done about 6,000miles since and has been running without any issue.

The car is on fixed service schedule and as such i was intending on picking up Quantum Platinum 5w40 (i have a cheap source) for the upcoming change.

However, i got to thinking that if it is intended for long life use, surely the LongLife III 5w30 must be of a higher quality and durability than the Platinum?

Both are fully synthetic as far as i know, which is the big requirement for the 1.8T engine, as such i was wondering if i would benefit by using the LongLife III oil on the fixed schedule - or would this just be overcomplicating things for no real gains?

As an aside i was chatting with my mechanic other day and mentioned that i was looking at VW's Quantum Oil. He responded by telling me that Quantum oil is of a poor quality and that id be better off using the Comma again - Wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this, as nearly everyone on here, UKMKIV's etc seem to unanimously recommend Quantum oil :S

As always, your thoughts are appreciated

Cheers

doesn't really matter

i;'d be tempted to use longlife 3 for a few reasons - good quality, meets vw 504/507 spec, and you can let your annual servicing slip a month or 2 without any issues

Quantum poor quality? The whole vag group uses the stuff, just think what would happen to the vag group if they used poor quality oil lol

Quantum is good stuff and cheaper then just about all of the vag spec fully synthetic oils. was told by a skoda tech not to bother with long life in a petrol and to stick to fixed servicing and that it wouldn't make any difference to it being put into a fixed servicing car

Comma 5w30 "Profile" fully synth

I've used this, seems good stuff. FYI its 504/507 spec.

Recon it remained clearer for longer than any other oil I've used.

'Quantum Platinum' gets my vote. But then I change mine religiously every 5k/6 months whichever first, it always comes out golden. Never had any issues.

Platinum FTW

It's what god intended for the 1.8T on fixed.

Is your mechanic on a back hander form Comma ??

Longlife is about 2.5 the price of platinum, iirc it comes in about £35 for 5 litres, where as platty is around £15 at TPS Cardiff.

I find longlife very thin and waterery for my liking. When I ran it, I got just over 10K before it told me to change so fixed was a bettter option

Does the mk1 vrs have the ability to tell you when it needs changed?

What about running something like mobil1 any benefit?

does if you have put the right numbers in with VCDS.

Dave, I think that could be what you got mate, I use Longlife 3 in mine and I only use it, The longlife is in the fabia at the mo and it seems fine, only put it in coz its what I had.

If you are on the 20k service then longlife 3 but if you drive like a loon and short trips then the 10k service is prob best for you. I do long trips and 10k is only 5 months driving, 20k has done me no harm but again I drive very steady and rarely push it.

Like Dave said the £ is a big difference, its not quite 2x the price for the longlife but its not far.

Both good stuff and damn cheap

Yeah it was when I first had the car, It was serviced before I got it, and I think it did just under 11k before the light came on.

All my trips are short, stop start stuff so yeah fixed is the one for me

Well, that was my logic for looking at Platinum in the first place, its cheap, readily available from TPS down the road and most importantly its VAG's own stuff so logically it must be good for the car.

As such, was very surprised by the response I got from my mechanic - never had any reason to doubt him before like, he's an independent and usually does all my work for me at cost plus beer tokens.

I think purely in the interest of cost saving, i'll just get the Platinum

Cheers

  • 1 year later...

Quantum oil is produced by Castrol on behalf of VW, so it's not bad at all! And better than Comma...
