Some people should not be allowed to use VCDS...

Featured Replies

.. Had to put something right on a car where someone activated washer level warning, when the car had no level sensor.... Washer light on all the time as a result of course (could be worse). Easy to put right, but can't help thinking that some people shouldn't be allowed to use this software!.....

My favouite is

Channel 18 on some EDC15 ECUs. It's the speed limiter and can only be adjusted downward!

09 electronics module byte 18................... :wall:

Never got this back to "normal". LED DRL's and auto/side lights all messed up. Works and is legal but not as factory set.

If anyone can tell me what hex to put in there and it works, I'll send them £10.

What car is this on? (currently on phone so can't see your details)

On my Superb it was 31, check my previous posts for a thread titled something like "DRL's lost"

Octavia 2 FL CR170 vRS, April 2010

I've been on the thread "DRLs lost" to no avail.

I'm sure I've tried 32 before,I'll have another go.

I can't exactly help you ...but I can say this ... I had the same problem because had "by mistake" changed the coding .!

Your best bet would be getting someone with VCDS to send your scan to Ross tech... They would be your best bet ...

HTH

We usually put warning messages in for those cases where you really shouldn't touch things, the Byte 18 mess is one of those cases but guess what? The reality is, people don't care about such warnings and ignore them. So whats the moral? If ignore such messages in VCDS you should be ready to spend money to fix something you broke. ;) In a worst case scenario we had customers where the Byte 18 issues couldn't be resolved, meaning even with re-coding it via SVM (Dealer only) the module was still messed up - the customer ended up replacing the module.

This boils down to a few rules:

#1 Do NOT touch what you don't understand.

#2 Do NOT try to fix something you don't know exactly how to fix.

#3 Ross-Tech is there for you, email us if you're in doubt about something - especially if there is such an error message...

Wonder if anyone has ever adjusted it and ended up with a very slow car!? :)

Oh Yes - seen a few.

The warning by Ross-tech is very clear (see below). One guy said he'd seen the warning but "didn't think it really meant that" - doh!

He limited his car to 80km/h when he used airport parking and had a slow journey home

Channel 18:

On some EDC-15 ECUs, this channel has a non-zero value in it like 190.

Yes, that's the "speed limiter".   Don't mess with it!

It can only be adjusted downward, and it's one-way!   You cannot increase the value, and if you decrease it, you're stuck with it.

So unless you want to permanently decrease your car's top speed, Don't mess with it!

If you do mess with it and your car ends up with a lower top speed than it had before, don't call us, don't e-mail us, and don't complain that we didn't warn you!</p>

just wondering ive never played or intend to play with the speed limiter but is there anyway to dissable the limiter again or is it stuck limited

As with many areas in life - a little knowledge is often dangerous! As good old Clint once said 'a man's gotta know his limitations'.

Could the speed limiter be reversed though? Although VCDS might not be able to do it perhaps something like VDS pro that can write directly to the eeeprom?

Yes, it can be changed by writing to the eeprom.

I have just checked the thread and my car is 31

(I have amended my post above)

Ah right... so when ross tech tell you it is a one way setting and cannot be increased again.. what they really mean is that it cannot be increased using their software.

At least it's not irreversible then but probably best to leave it alone anyway!

I'll give it a try tonight but I don't know if my vehicle will be the same as a Superb Elegance, somehow I doubt it.

Does yours have LED DRL's ?

Ah sorry, now I am on the laptop I can see you have an Octavia

alberg posted this on the DRL's 'lost' thread for a FL, not sure if he has had this confirmed as being correct or not.though.
