2012 S4 avant

Featured Replies

Chris - I had a V8 S4 prior to my Octy and like you I loved the engine but the new S4 is a totally different car to the S5, I'd recommend taking out a new saloon for an hour or so and you'll notice a big difference - Lighter, faster, more agile and also has a better interior (have a read of EVOs RS5 review which compares it to the S4 avant camera car - very interesting). I toyed with getting a 2 year old RS6 but due to it's sheer size and running costs I put my money on the new S4, the RS6 is a straight line monster but not as good when it comes to corners and stopping.

That's interesting to hear! :D

You are right. Think someone was getting annoyed at my posts about the Audi yet I pay to be a member and he/she doesn't!

Anyway, I am absolutely loving it. The noise is soooooo nice as is the low down acceleration and the interior. Definitely worth it. Fuel bills have certainly gone up but it is getting better. Done 900 miles now so went for a good thrash earlier, great fun. Trouble is though it gets more attention than I would like.

You enjoying the vrs yet?

I have been reading various items and noted a fair amount of banter,,,,??!?!

I bet the noise is excellent, but just read this morning of that new bi turbo a6,,, same 0 60 time as yours!!?!? Must be a monster?!? I will have to wait and see, things not looking good in job matters, as in medical pension???

As for my vrs, yes I have warmed to it and like it now, not as quick but never bought it for that, few issues with the deal I got, which looks like I was conned but water under the bridge

I can't imagine they'd make an A6 with 0-60 of 4.9 (S4 time according to parkers) as that is S6 territory and about 0.5 off RS6. I know there is a 4.0 bi-turbo RS6 on the way.

Sorry to hear that news mate. Hope all works out for you.

You considered the remap on the VRS?

You should probably name and shame who conned you as that is bang out of line.

I thought even the diesel bi turbo A6 was doing the 60 dash in 5 seconds now according to journo's (think the official time is quoted as 5.2 seconds iirc) and it is even more rapid in the mid range and top end. Being capable of 44mpg certainly messes with my head as I was seriously considering an s4 avant as my next car.

Just read about it. What can I say, very impressive. In terms of straight line it is only just slower than the S4 and quicker than an S3! Whilst getting very good fuel economy. My guess is it won't handle or stop as quick as an S4 but I think the A6 range is meant to be nicer overall inside than the A4 range.

So it is better than an S4 in some respects and not in others. Difference in price is 7k base price so I guess it's size and mileage that would determine whether you want the S4 or A6.

Personally I couldn't fit an A6 in my garage and once I specced an A6 I would probably be looking at 52k. For my needs I made the right choice but I can see why you would want the A6 over the S4. Audi have made a beauty there. Just think what the new RS6 will be like!!!!!!!!!!!

The new A6 with the bi-turbo diesel is a bit of a rocket ship with plenty of torque but Nicky is right in saying that it would cost a fair bit get the best "drivers" spec. I'd say to get it up to the standard of an S4 you'd need the adjustable dampers and the diff but also remember that this car is almost 2 tonnes so isn't going to stop or go around corners like an S or RS version.

Audi are notorious for being stingy with spec but are very good at drawing you in and before you know it you're even more skint than you were before you thought about buying one!

The new S6 is meant to be very wallowy ( if thats a word) so this isn't going to be any better, also I don't think that exceptional fuel economy is going to be achievable if you rag it everywhere so you may as well get it with a decent petrol engine under the bonnet!

Get an S4, unless you're over 60! It would wipe the floor with any diesel Audi on the market at the minute - not including the le mans racer!

so so true. I originally limited my self to a budget for my S4 with no expensive options thinking that it's an S4 it's going to be loaded with stuff. 4.5-5k later I have a half decent spec S4 and am over my initial budget. Longdog has his specced as it should be on an S4 and his was probably 4k more than mine.

Incredible what options it didn't come with.

Good point about the fuel economy. Mine should be getting 42mpg on the motorway, fat chance of that. Also yes if you're going to rag it around then get a petrol.

Paul, what do you think of the S4 exhaust note compared to your B7?

I had a rag around this morning and averaged 12mpg...

Car makes a lot more sense when driven like that though. :D

It is epic when you just want to get to warp speed ASAP. :giggle: Shame you just can't do it that often.

Jesus, the lowest I ever got as an average was 19mpg in my Honda Civic Type R that was pushing it though.

I did manage 8mpg once just after it was cranked up to 610(ish)bhp...

For such occasions the petrol tank is far too small. It's only 10-12 gallons. (can't remember which)

We took it to Tesco this morning to do the weekly shop and I got 5p off per litre. Every little helps. :giggle:

Actually, it makes you consider what the car does. You just have to stop thinking of is as a regular fast car, otherwise it's too compromised.

As a supercar it is actually quite practical. Couldn't take many 0-60mph in 3 second machines to do a weekly shop with three people.

Even if it's too wide for a regular space (we had little 'un so used parents spaces) and all the kerbs are high enough to damage the front splitter (£600) if you try and go in forwards and not leave the back sticking out so people brush past it.

So you keeping it then?

So you keeping it then?

No.

Like it a bit more after a blast though, even though the ownership experience isn't perfect, the ride is hard/noisy and the interior surprisingly small.

I've got other things I want to do going forward and I feel like I've ticked this box so I can move on.

There are a few things I really want to do before I'm 40 (three years to go) which will give me a much better situation later on.

So best get those out of the way first. It's been my plan since I was 30 and there are only two things left on the list.

Not having all that money tied up in a car (or paying out £££ per month) will make it much easier.

What are you going to get then???

What are you going to get then???

It's not a car. It's things I want to do that'll make my life easier when I'm older. Mainly financial.

Having said that though, my track toy 4x4 Fabia should be ready for next year. I'm looking forward to surprising people with that. :)

Well, you'll never beat the sound of a V8 but I'm more than happy with the sound of the new one. I may be wrong but I'm sure this one has a different exhaust than the pre-facelift one, sounds much more throaty but not as loud as BFs GTR.

Does it have an exhaust option like the TT-RS with a button and a flap to make it more throaty?

Not over 60 but over 30 and with the combination of a family and multiple 2000+ mile euro trips each year - the all round cruising ability, fuel consumption and performance of the A6 bi turbo is very intriguing indeed. I tend not to rag my cars on the road nowadays so I wonder if the outright performance of he S4 may actually be wasted and the far bigger boot of an A6 avant far more advantageous. God, I must be getting old!!!

Good points and definitely the better option for you if you need a big boot (the S4 boot is not the biggest) and use it for big miles.

We're all getting old, everyone who has subscribed to this thread has made a comment at some point about either fuel consumption or practicality! I'm just looking forward to the day when my kids have their own cars so I can get my dream car, maybe!

very nice motor these turbo charged

I think thats the whole point,,,

A car for the purpose

A lovely s4 is a dream car of mine, and I am not a diesel fan, but a bi turbo diesel could be the car if things don,t go to plan for me, as in off with a medical pension before my time!!!

That will mean miles on a car to a caravan somewhere!!!

About my vrs,,, I taxed my 250 the month before I sold it, 245 quid, so expected some money back from the tax office,,, but much to my dismay I was told the dealer had cashed in,,, now if I was told this on top of a poor value of my pride and joy mint 250 I would have walked away and been no deal,,,,,

I have pointed this out to the sales man who, to be fair has been good about it, and said he will speak to the manager,,,,

Andy

One question though,,,,,

Pm if it's easier,,,,

What car,s have you upset??? I must admit I finished work in my 250 a few months back and was highly miffed about Mr Audi tryin to get in my boot in a 40 limit,,,

I got on the motorway and put my foot down but Mr Audi was still behind,, as I moved over I noted the 4 exhausts and accepted the defeat!!!!!

Nice car, hat off

Andy

It doesn't no. I think longdog is right about the sound being better on the facelift version.
