Do I, or Don't I?

Featured Replies

Sell the Octy.

TBH, financially it would make sense. I could do with liberating some spare cash, and come insurance time It appears I'm going to get my premium loaded heavily due to the second of my two recent speeding offences (both SP30s). Six points on my license is a pain, and I think it's going to cost me more than I'd like to pay.

Now, I know damn well that it's unlikely I'm going to be able to sell the car and make enough money to pay off the finance, so I'm going to have to pay some additional money to clear it off.

I'd also like to buy something both me and my partner can drive... She's only 21 and has only just recently passed her test, so the Octy's insurance would be crippling with her on it. She's seen a nice yellow Megane Cabriolet she likes, and the insurance wouldn't be too bad, but I can't part-ex the Octy because i'm in negative equity, can I? Or can I get a trader to charge me more for the car I buy so that they can put the extra in to clear the finance on the Octy? I don't have the ready case available to put any money into the deal.

I guess I'm just looking for some ideas here...

What I'd really like is a Furby vRS, but I can't see a way I can do that.

If I sell it, how much is it likely to be worth? You all know the WRC's spec, it's got 16K on it, just serviced 500 miles ago, and it's immaculate. Absolutely bog standard apart from a professionally installed Snooper S6R- Neo. It's on a 52 plate, first registered early 2003 so has nearly a year's warranty left.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

I think you should keep it. I have been running uninsurable cars for years with my Mrs on the policy. Octys are very nice cars, and despite furbys being good, the Octy is going to feel a lot better to be in than the Furby. When finance is involved it is a very difficult decision, but i would do whatever you could to keep it.

And by the way, do not buy a renault.......ever ! They are poo.

Keep it.Polish it.Cherish it. :D

You would be sooooo miserable if you sold it!

Read the JD power survey again as well! Don't end up with a duffer of a car ;)

I went through this a couple of cars ago, in the same situation.

You can p/x the car to another dealer, they will check the finance outstanding and the difference between the p/x value and the outstanding finance will be added to the total cost you need to purchase the other vehicle. Both will be listed as separate items on the sales invoice.

I know you're right... but i could really do with saving some money at the moment, as we want to move in the not too distant future... And I know that when the insurance comes up in June, I am simply NOT going to be able to pay for it. I'm already stretched to the limit each month and I can't afford to pay for it in a lump sum.

Some people would just drive uninsured, but that's not my way. I know the sensible thing to do is sell the car, but every time I look at it I realise I'm never going to be able to get it back if I do, and I'd regret it.

Argggh! Usually it's other people asking ME these questions.

You have no problem selling a car to a dealer if you have neg equity in the vehicle, Like mannyo said they just add it on to your 'new' figure. As far as a renualt goes from my sisters experience I wouldn't but one, however views can be tainted by other peoples problems, what about the Astra cab, some may disagree but I have had one before my Octy and they are resonibly good motors and the boot space is very good for a convertable.

At the end of the day only you can decide, you will miss the Octy but never forget about it, better to have memories than none at all.

How did you get points on your license then?

Oh and keep the car if it's that clean....

Insurance is a bit much really.the octy is in a higher group than my Audi 1.8T quattro A4 was!!( apparently even the 20 insurance groups are sub divided by the insurers into about 100 more. They were both somewhere in the 80's but the skoda higher than the Audi!!)

Don't know how much you would save though really. My Octy is about

2 x SP30s = 6 points

And I know I should. I want to. But I know I won't be able to afford the insurance.

Can't you gift the car to the good lady and she has it and insures it :D (do you trust her with your life

I thought about it, but with only a month's full license experience, no NCD and at 21 I doubt it'd work out cheaper to do that, but it's a thought.

i thikn you missed the point... how did you get 6 points if you have a profesionally fitted snooper? do these not pick up cameras etc ?

What I would ask is this, how much negative are you in. Is that more than the insurance you would save?

+ you will be in negative on the megan to the tune of present negative + 20% instant dep when you take it out of the dealer.

As a guide I was ball parked offered 8.5k for mine regardless of it's limited model appeal, it's an octavia vrs at the end of the day. However onsite you may get more for it it you can be done with the private sale / clearing finance.

I'd look at what the total cost to change is, because I suspect the real saving might actually not be that much. Although it maybe given the ballon payment option on the megane...

But I would not buy the megane.

16k miles, I cry...53k here :( BTW that offer was made based on 12k a year.

Sell it and buy a Rover.

Sell it and buy Rover.

:D

A fair point, Colin... My concern is not the amount of debt, per se, but rather whether or not I can afford to make the monthly payments. I either buy a cheaper, second hand car - like the Megane - for both of us and use the money saved on the monthly finance to pay the insurance, or I don't get the insurance for the Octy, as I can't afford to pay it. Which isn't an option.

Why not try for a cheaper Skoda albeit a Fabia or smaller engine octi?

Try an Octy like mine :D

Nice and economical (overall average is 47 mpg inc trackdays), full spec(leather, climate, sunroof, xenons) cheap to insure (

If I have to change, I'm going to have to go for either fun (like a cabrio) or utter practicality (like diesel estate) but I think If I bought another Octy I'd forever be comparing it to the vRS. And I couldn't stick anything less than the Furby vRS because quite frankly it's way too small for me... It's my partner that's really 'in the driving seat' on this one so to speak. It'd have to be something she's happy with.

Don't think that having the Missus on your insurance will cripple you, more than likely to bring it down IMO.

When I had my previous cars I used to add my Mum or GF to my insurance, My Mum I could understand bringing the premiums down but the GF did the same amount of good......to the tune of a couple of hundred notes.

I don't quite understand the logic but I could see the benefits quite clearly!! :D

I only wish that were true in this case. I've had a lot of quotes, and on each one I've checked with me alone, with her added as my partner, and with her added as my wife, and just putting her on nearly doubles the price!

But like I say, she's young and inexperienced.

Asking for trouble with that quote ;)

If you don't mind me asking, how much is your insurance?

I see.......
