Gearbox oil

Featured Replies

Eh up guys just a quicky, My octy VRS is booked in next week to get new discs, pads and brake fluid, while its up in the air my good friend ( mechanic ) who is doing the job for me is also going to change the oil in the gearbox, the question I`m asking you guys will EP75w90 semi-synthetic be ok, the reason I`m asking is due to having 2 litres of it in my shed un opened and trying to save a few quid, Cheers guys

no - you must use the proper vag spec oil

when i changed mine on my mk1 octy vrs i made the mistake of using what my local motorfactors listed, big mistake, notchy gearchange, crunching when cold so i changed it & used genuine skoda oil & was much better! cant remember price but it wasnt that expensive.Genuine oil everytime in my opinion.

^^ what the others have said - for the sake of a few quid you could end up frelling your g/box

So what's the correct oil to use then? Cheers.....

Go to skoda, vw or tps and buy the right stuff. Should cost you less than £15.

as specified by the SAE the correct grade for your gearbox is 75W 90 so you will be able to save a few quid ;-) oh and it holds 2L

People seem to have problems when they have used non vw 75W90 so rather than save a few quid get the proper stuff.

I dont know maybe they didnt fill it right up, that is the spec vw will use tho.

Actually if I remember rightly the VW oil is hard to use it doesnt have a retractable spout in the bottle so you would need the oil syringe to fill the box as it is hard to acsess the fill plug. Carlube is the easiest bottle to use as it does come with the spout.

You need a funnel and a length of hosepipe.

Mine was carlube that i used that was supplied from the motor factors,i know from experiance this was a mistake,as i said before use genuine gearbox oil from skoda,it doesnt cost much if any more that other oil & you will have no problems. Its not a difficult job to do,just make sure you undo the filler plug before you remove the drain plug & make sure the car is level when you re-fill the gearbox.

Sorry to bump but how hard is it to change the 'box oil on a vRS?

Not that hard I wouldn't think. I still can't find the filler plug though lol.

When you find it, make sure you can get it out BEFORE you drain the old oil, just in case....

Lol. Will do I've done it on previous cars so know about that trick lol. Where on earth is the fill plug in these boxes though?

On the front of the gear box, helpful obscured by the wiggly metal pipe (part of the power steering or air con). If you find the drain plug (17mm hex plug) on the bottom of the gear box (near the vw symbol on mine) then look in the same area on the front of the box.

Ive never had a problem using any other oils graded by the SAE.

But what has been said is very true, use any other oil at your peril

i used non OEM stuff on my vrs once, a day later i put OEM back in it.. was horrible and notchy. im pretty sure thats what killed my Bora gearbox too.

can't even believe anyone would contemplate using the non vw oil

it is not even much cheaper - use what your box was designed for or you'll regret it

Called to the Skoda dealer to buy some gearbox oil, very surprised it was only £12.37 all in for the 2 litres :sun:

Finaly got round to doing the gearbox oil.8d824871.jpgThought I would take a few pics so people can see the drain off point and refill point. f1615564.jpg21632788.jpg A bit of hose pipe and a funnel works a treat. 7920feac.jpg

Hmpf!...... wish i'd read this before changing the gearbox oil last weekend. Used the car (which has 100,000 miles on it) to go and get some Carlube 70/90 semi synthetic, got home, changed the oil, straight away encountered gear selection problems. The next day when it was starting from cold i could not get second gear. It's been like that all week. It's o.k. once it's warmed up, but it was particularly crap the other morning when we had a frost. It felt like the gearbox was full of treacle! I'm going to get some genuine stuff on the way home tonight!

Is this reasonably easy to do? I have no knowledge of my car ever having had this done so I assume it hasn't been done. Gearbox feels pretty good though. Bit stiffer when its cold than warm but nothing that is alarming. I just prefer preventative medicine in the case of mechanical thing...

Is the gearbox underneath the engine? Also is it something that is possible to get wrong easily...ie overfilling or anything ? :) gotta get all the fact before i dive in!
