more turbo woes :( oil feed pipe pressure?

Featured Replies

hi all, just rebuilt turbo/head on my tdi... started up great.. 5 minutes later tons of blue smoke from exhaust :(

so after some swear words and tears.. :( decided to do some basic checks- slackened oil feed pipe union to turbo- a dribble of oil.. removed union- still a dribble of oil.. (with engine running ) no real pressure present- i thought it was a pressurised feed? i was expecting it to squirt out not dribble with no real pressure?

ive checked the feed pipe- thats clear with no obstruction.. i know the oil pump is good- as i checked and cleaned that.. ive just removed the oil filter housing just to see whats going on- from what i can see the turbo feed id from the same chamber as the oil warning light.. but my oil light is operating normally..

any thoughts on this one would be appreciated.. starting to cost me serious money now :(

Blue smoke..... seals failed in the turbo?

yeh- my guesses is that oil starvation has just totalled my new turbo.. :'( :wall:

any ideas on what sort of oil pressure (psi) should i be getting through the turbo oil feed pipe??

my guess is that it should be normal oil pressure? (as its fed from the same chamber as the oil pressure switch?)

but any ideas on what is normal oil pressure on a tdi 110? im gonna check it later after i put the 'cleaned' oil filter housing back on- (ive just found adaptors for both the oil switch thread and the turbo feed thread so i can test each and compare..)

question is- new turbo (oil pressure ok) new/sh engine (oil pressure not ok) or scrap the car and walk everywhere :(

Checked that the turbo oil drain is not blocked, and that oil is returning to the sump okay?

yeh checked those..

after a few hours of getting covered in oil.. i found what was causing my zero oil pressure- blocked pickup! even tho i completely cleaned it before reassembly.. after another bout of cleaning, checked oil pressure from turbo feed- nice and healthy.. :)

so now im in a situation where ive totalled my second turbo :( and until i can guarantee that there is no more pick-up blocking black sludge in any of the oilways i cannot fit another turbo.. :(

so what im thinking- keep the oil pressure gauge connected to the turbo feed- so it disconnects the oil feed to the seized turbo..

run maybe drive the engine and either use tons of oil flush and keep dropping the oil until it comes out as clean as it went in?? or use diesel instead/as well as oil to flush it out.. ??

any ideas on how to clean this out so it dosn't keep happening? as i do alot of motorway miles so next time, i might not be so lucky..

Under a Tenner for a new one m8.

tenner for the oil pickup?- the only thing is that i dont think the oil pickup is the problem.. its the massive amount of cack thats stuck in all the oilways etc? the oil pickup screen seems to be doing its job perfectly- stopping crap getting into the oil pump.. looks like im just gonna keep flushing and dropping the oil till i feel confident about fitting a new turbo and not watching it kill itself in minutes.. :)

Flush all the oilways thoroughly. If the pickup is in the sump like on the 1.8T then use a sump gasket when replacing the sump or be very careful not to use much sump sealant if you use that, as that's what gets into the oil and blocks the pickup. I would try and put a gauge sender on the turbo feed pipe once done, then you can be sure the oil pressure is ok at idle before you take it for a drive. You'll only damage another turbo if theres no oil lubrication when its spooling up.
