Great vRS drive home

Featured Replies

A dry sunny evening, a quiet country road... don't seem to get this very often, so I made the most of it!

Put the vRS into sport mode, not really done this much before, but I will definately be doing it more often!

It's good to remember the reasons I brought this car in the first place. Got home with a beaming smile on my face!!

Yes it's a different car when it's in sport,so responsive.

Had a good drive home myself , slipped off the A1 and took charge of the gears myself on the back roads great fun!Been filling up with shell v power not sure it makes any difference?Only had my car 2 weeks not thrashed it but my mpg is 30 /32

V power all the way. My mileage was similar, now over 5k miles get anything between 35 - 45 mpg

After some 8 months of ownership I very rarely leave it on D anymore. I found I'm enjoying the car much more If I have it in manual while giving it only just a little more of my attention as an exchange. The D mode makes it feel like a Diesel in one way. Pretty boring and uninspiring, except If you ask for some brisky acceleration now and then. Sport mode is ideal for quick hill climbing, it drops exactly where you want it to 90% of the time but in semi-urban roads I'd really like it to change to 2nd gear just a little earlier before everybody turns their heads at me!

As somebody else said above, totally different car between automatic and manual/sport.

I am guilty of leaving it in D for the daily commute as all S will do is keep it at higher revs as I slowly follow the cars ahead! I will use S when the road is a bit more open or when I want more acceleration. I have started to force myself to use the paddles and boy what a difference, sport mode is very good but I still feel not fully in control and get paranoid about the noise as it gets close to the red line, the paddles put you more in control and have to think about the drive again and plan for the road ahead, can be much more enjoyable.

I use the paddles all the time, makes it feel like a diffrent car as its more responsive and doesnt have to drop 3-4 gears to give it some :)

Love the paddles but you really do have the change driving styles and learn to be smooth. Throttle is pretty responsive at the top of it and both my parents have noticed that you'd be better off driving barefoot and just using your big toe. My mother drove my vRS about 15 miles yesterday and had no hesitation, no wheel spinning off the line and loved it. She didn't use the paddles and was quite content with the box in auto. I can see them buying one in a few years.

For me I'm in D most of the time as most of the time I'm commuting in traffic, stop start between lights. On the way home it's about the same but will use paddles to make more progress. Open roads it's paddles all the time and I will use paddles round town too if the mood takes me. S is a waste of time though apart from dropping cogs quickly to overtake but then the kickdown does this too. It took me about 2-3000 miles to really learn how it all worked and get the best out of it but it was fun too and I still love it

i hate the car in any other mode except D it just doesn't feel or sound right to me

do they have a how to use a dsg for beginners course ?

I'll agree that if you have driven mostly in D then switching to S makes the car sound like it is killing the engine but that is mainly as you won't have heard the engine at the higher revs which can sound excessively harsh. The feeling of the car changes dramatically and starts to pull like a vRS should. I have found that sitting in D the whole time makes you think you are in a standard car not a 'hot hatch'. The beast only comes alive in S or manual and does seem best when pushed!
