Roaring sound!

Featured Replies

My 2001 fabia has started making a roaring sound while accelarating. Don't think it's the engine as while turning right the soumd goes and the engine sounds fine! So thought maybe the exhaust, so done some temp repairs on a couple of small cracks/holes. Still the same after repairs! Any ideas?

Is it just when you accelerate, or is it speed dependant?

Bit of both really! Gets quiter when doing 70 on m'way.

Do you feel it or just hear it?

Again both

Is it from one side?

my car made this noise too - turned out to be wheel bearing..

try driving along and pop it into neutral see if it still does it. if it still makes the noise......then might be a wheel bearing.- good test for this is to drive down the road at the speed when it makes the noise and turn left to right (obviously make sure no one else is around :giggle: ). if the noise stops when your turning either left or right its likely to be one of the wheel bearings.

got mine replaced £90 local independent.

good luck!

Thanks will try that.

Thanks will try that.

let us know how you get on!

Definitely sounds like a badly worn wheel bearing to me, I had 5 done (!) in my Clio, so I am very familiar with it. Garages usually check for it by jacking the car up and spinning the wheel by hand, listening carefully for any "bearing grumble" but the method describe by harryja is easier tbh.

also spin the wheel and hold the spring you can normally feel it

Ok done the test. When i turn right the noise goes and when i turn left still makes noise. So would u say it's the left thats needs changing? Will take to be done tomorrow as it my day off.

definitely sounds like a wheel bearing issue to me mate. i cant remember which side the problem bearing is likely to be depending on what side the noise stops when turning etc. - hopefully someone else can help us out here! :)

if i remember right then its the opposite bearing from the way you turn,

so ...if noise stops when turning left, its a right wheel bearing and vice versa

dont quote me on this though! :D

alternatively jack it up and test each wheel for wobble,, if there's only one that wobbles - that's probably the one :giggle:

There isnt a lion in the boot is there?

Cool, booked in for tomorrow. £70 including fitting.

a) it probably won't wobble as the bearings are so strong

B) it's not always the opposite side that's gone, I had a Leon where the noise would disappear when turning right (i.e. load on the passenger side) but having taken it to a garage all geared up to change the passenger bearing, he gave it one last check by jacking the wheels and spinning them as fast as he could by hand only to find it was actually the drivers side. So steering left/right is a good test to see if it is a wheel bearing, but not always indicative of which one

let us know how u get on fella
