Best diesel

Featured Replies

What do people feel is the best diesel for the 2.0 tdi pd engines with 140bhp? Obviously I try to steer clear of supermarkets where I can, but do

any stand out in terms of economy for any of you??

Cheers

  • Have to agree, not all fuel is the same fuel. This has been proven many times, yes the differences may not be hugely different but then again nor are alot of things for car maintenance. For example Mo

I'm afraid there is a difference, the fuel is all the same at each fuel station but some like shell/BP/Esso add adatives at the pump, Asda/ Morrisons don't.

Quality diesel helps the engine to say clean. Quality fuel doesn't smoke as much either. more mpg

" Awaites to get slated but I don't care "

OK maybe I didn't make that very clear, granted I think we all know that ALL fuels are slightly different, but in my CR TDi there is no difference in performance or economy between the 4 different brands I use.

I wouldn't use Morrisons fuel because of the high % of Bio content there diesel has,

I did notice a drop in MPG on the single tankful of Harvest Energy fuel I once used though.

My Octy is the first car to ever have a 'preference' to where i buy the fuel from. Iv always gone for the cheapest i.e Tesco ect but the car used to get really crap MPG (34-40mpg) and i couldt figure out why. Now it runs on Shell fuel save diesel and its happy as larry :) averaging about 45-55mpg and there was a very slight reduction in engine knock.

Harvest energy i found is the most economical.

Tesco and morrisons put in 6% Bio-diesel which can ruin PD and CR engines as well as loweing fuel consumption

In comparision - 450 miles til fuel light on tesco and morrisons fuel, Harvest 520 miles until the fuel light.

Hi All

I have used different diesel in the VRS and my Astravan. I find, normally that I get the best mpg with Shell FuelSave diesel in my van and it runs smoothly also. I did try Shell Vpower and it ran very smoothly but mpg dropped. I tried BP ultimate and it ran smoothly and felt slightly more responsive - the mpg was nearly the same as Shell FuelSave but it is too expensive.

The VRS has has several diesels in it and somehow, Asda diesel seems to be the best for mpg. It ran very well on BP ultimate but mpg dropped. We haven't tried Shell FuelSave or Vpower in it yet.

I think a lot of the time it is down to your vehicle. You just have to try different fuels and see what one it likes.

There was a comment about not using a fuel because it had more biodiesel in it. All diesel in the UK has bio in it up to a max of 7% - the bio actually acts as a lubricant and detergent so it lubes and cleans your fuel system and engine. It also has oxygen molecules in it so helps the fuel to burn more completely and as a result, give more power. The problem is that at higher concentrations, certian seals in the fuel system can perish, that is why they are only allowed to put 7% in by the Government.

Many vehicles have run on up to 100% bio and had no problems but modern vehicles are not really set up for it (i.e. common rail).

In summary - Shell FuelSave is a good place to start but it is worth trying different fuels to see what your engine likes.

Cheers

Thanks guys, just brimmed mine with bp ultimate, and then ill try shell.

Shell Fuelsave for me all the way, tried a few different fuels and although my current VRS isn't run in yet (7900 miles) my old 2001 Octy 1.9tdi Elegance varied as much as 4-6mpg by using crap (supermarket) fuel - I also feel the additives do their job after doing 120k in 6 years with NO problems (other than a MAF 3 years ago), my brother now has that car and it's still going strong!

My VRS did 52mpg this morning on my 180mile commute mostly sat at 80mph M1, M42, M5 + 30 miles of A roads...

BP Ulimate for me only, however at £1.57 a litre it's getting beyond a joke.

Anytime i'm over in England i always fill up with Shell V power. (we don't have Shell in NI, just BP and then all the crap independent garages)

Just paid 1.47 here in south wales, that's quite a differential.

Was only on the news last week that NI is the most expensive for derv in Europe FFS :wall:

Either way ridiculously expensive. I find myself getting more like miss daisy every day to keep the bill manageable!!

Mine likes Shell and nothing else :)

Generally you get what you pay for, thankfully we have a Shell garage opposite Tescos & that keeps the shell prices competitive.  For economy LPG is the way forward, especially if you have tank at home

Shell works best in mine, vpower is better but the cost makes it marginal

Whichever I'm passing when I need some fuel

I agree diesel can vary quiet a lot whereas petrol doesn't as much.

What do Irish owners use in there vrs diesel,I find topaz the best.

Premium derv is b*llo*ks and a waste of money. All fuel is the same - spend time researching how the IPL (International Petrolium Exchange) works. It's a brokered comoddity and the fuel companies then stick in their additive package which may or may not make any difference to the economy and performance.

As for the small % of bio diesel used by Tesco / Morrisons kiloling our engines - that b*llo*ks as well as all european car manufacturers fuel pumps use synthetic seals nowadays. In fact I think it's a regulation that cars HAVE to be able to tolerate 5% of bio!

The only show stopper as far as we are concerned is the amount of bio in Tesco / Morrisons. Apart from that - buy what you want - it's all good :-)

Yes but u also need to be carefully where u buy as there is washed diesel out there and some fuel station tanks are old and may contain water fragments so no it s not all the same period!!

All below relates to Petrol

Sorry but fuels do vary, one test here on Petrol http://www.thorneymotorsport.co.uk/media/Auto_Express_Fuel_Test_-_January_2010.shtml

The poorer quality fuels will show little differance in the driveability of an average family car as they are tuned softly to run on anything that comes up to the basic spec. The differance you may notice is poorer mpg from some "supermarket cheaper fuels"

Many with performance cars in a higher state of tune will notice differences in the driveabilty & smoothness when using cheaper fuels. I had major issues with Tescos momentum in one car, it was fine when being driven hard but was a bag of pooh at starting & running gently, mpg was also somewhat worse than V power.

Fuels like V power are also rumoured to loose some performance if hanging around for weeks in tanks, not sure if its true or not

Re Diesel the amount of Bio that can be put in is due to be raised to I think either 8 or 10%. Some of the not so old diesels may have issues with this I gather. Oh for the early diesels that would run on any old rubbish

What in God's name is "Washed Diesel"?!!!

As for water fragments in tanks - it would be very small amounts - I used to install pipework and pumps years ago and have actually been down into tanks to check them - never noticed any sign of water even in the small amount left in the bottom of the tank.

I think washed is where they remove the dye from red/green diesel to make it look normal.
