iPad battery life

Featured Replies

I'm actually quite amazed how good the new iPad battery life is. Considering I can flatten my phone in less than a day, I'm surprised that I can't do the same to my iPad. When not in use it doesn't use any battery at all, and when I'm using it it retains it really well!

Takes a while to charge, but that's better than having to plug it in every 5 minutes! Any other experiences with tablet battery life? Are others actually bad, or was I expecting something worse than is reality?

Found the same with the wifes Galaxy Tab. Battery life puts my phone to shame...

Yep, its making my phone look dire haha! My friend at work has the iPad 2 and says it will drain after a few hours play. I'm wondering if this is actually the case?

I leave mine on charge overnight and all day while I'm working. I am on it all evening from about 4.30pm to 11.30pm and depending what I'm doing on it, I have about 30% left by the time I go to bed. The IPhone is a different kettle of fish, have to charge it every couple of days even though I don't use it excessively. Love my IPad and IPhone! I have the IPad2 and can play on it for about 10 hours.

Considering the size of the tablets I assume that the battery is a good size. Therefore when the screen is off it really should not have anything more to do than a smartphone, even less if it is not 3G.

My ipad2 (wifi only) lasts really well. I very rarely switch it off just leave it in sleep (activated by the cover) when not in use, normally lasts several days of intermittent usage unless I am bored at a weekend and surfing around and playing games on it.

Depends what you do on it.

Thanks for the useful post above :dull: I realise that, I meant in general terms in comparison to my phone and what I expected, I think it's quite amazing.

Mine arrived with 86% battery and I hammered it for hours, from getting home to work til going to sleep, and it didn't need a charge. I then continued the next day. you know what it's like when you get a new toy lol.

I let it charge overnight on sunday, unplugged it at 100% in the morning, went to work, came home and it was still on 100%. I haven't charged it since, so 2 days later it still has 71% battery, despite playing with it each evening. Baffled lol.

Ipad 2 wifi and i get 8 - 10 hours on a full charge. Quite impressed comsidering, does 95% of the stuff you would want a laptop to do.

My iPad ( the new one) lasts about 12 hours with wifi and use. Really impressed with it

The ipad is designed to give "around" 10 hours use...

They had to double the size of the battery in the ipad 3 to stick to that with the fancy screen and gfx - it now has a battery bigger than some laptops.

Loz - let it run right down a couple of times then charge full, youll find the life will get even better.

Yes, I'd heard it had been given a much bigger battery, well it certainly works!

I'm going to do that Col, I let it run down quite low before I charged it last time and I'm going to just leave it now til it gets in the red!

What's battery life like when screen and gfx are at full tilt for retina optimised games?

I read it can't charge under such use such is the power draw.

Basically the battery is HUGE in comparison to a phone battery and the CPU etc is pretty low power.

Here are some pictures of the innards. The last picture shows the battery on the far right. Pretty big and fills a fairly large portion of the device:

Loz,

My experience with my iPhone 4 and the new iPad is pretty much ditto yours despite some negative press re New iPad battery life. I was surprised about recharge times but after comparing the difference in times for my iPhone and MacBook Pro I realised its more in keeping with a laptop rather than a phone. Makes sense I supposed.

Ah yeah, it is pretty huge lol! As if someone ripped one apart!!

Lol. It happens with pretty much everything these days. Some techie website gets hold of one and they open it up to show everyone it's innards!

They probably put it all back together again. They took it apart very professionally and carefully.

My iPad battery is epic, seems to last for weeks. Admittedly I don't do *that* much on it but still. I've left it in the boot of my car before for like 3 weeks with 10% battery, and it was still on about 6% when I fished it out

Just recently I've been using my iPad2 as a second monitor for my laptop whilst doing my assignments - its lasting between 8-10 hours.

Tis called DisplayLink and wirelessly extends your screen on to it. tis free. works with win7

That sounds awesome! I'll have to look into it! Thanks for sharing.

I'm going to go out on limb here and say that ios 5 has reduced my battery life by a good 20-25%. Not impressed.

I went out last saturday for some Milk and accidentally came back with the New iPad 2, the 3G version

Wife not best pleased but Hey, I need some pleasure

Got the New iPad 3G about 2 weeks ago and I have to say, compared to my First Gen iPad 3G, the battery life SUCKS!!! I use it to watch TV (Netflix, iPlayer etc) when in the Garden or cooking in the kitchen and I'm lucky to get 3hrs out of the thing. The old one was much better, probably half again as long at least.

I have since looking into this issue found out that the new iPad says it's 100% charged when in fact there can be anoth 2 + hrs to go before it is fully charged. I have also heard that Auto Brightness should be disabled and the brightness knocked down to 50%. The default on my new iPad was 'Auto' + 100% brightness. Changing this, I have seen a marked improvement.

Charging also sucks. You cant charge and use as the drain seems to outweight the charging.

After all this though, I still love it.

PS. Apple have just released a new case with the magnetic fold up cover built in. My advice, dont buy it! The upright angle is so close to 90' that it's just not stable and difficult to see. Also the cover needs to be a little larger to match the size of the rest of the case not the size of the screen. Try one and you'll see what I mean. I'm taking mine back at the weekend for a refund. For me, it's not fit for purpose. Real shame cause it does look good.

But that shortens the life of batteries

Are you using the iPad supplied 10w charger???

You can use AND charge at the same time with that.

Update,

Been running at 50% brightness and auto brightness off for about 4 - 5 days now and it's made an amazing difference. Been using for about 4 hours today with about 1 hour playing a game and I've got over 80% battery remaining.

Been using the supplied charger for all charging.
