Coolant consumption

Featured Replies

I have a Fabia HTP 1.2 12v 2005, and the issue is that the car is consuming coolant and i have to refill the reservoir every 60 or 70 Km, and depends also if there's a traffic jam. There's no problem with the temperature, because i refill every time the light is activated.

The motor water take was replaced because there was leak, but the problem persist.

Any suggestions? The car is right now at the mechanic.

If the car is parked, can you see it leaking?

Radiators are a common place for it to leak.

There's no leak other than A/C water. If it's parked there's nothing.

Please!!! i need help... I can't find the reason of the consumption. The mechanic try with air pressure and there's no scape!

+1 for the Rad. Mine went on the fabia and coolant use was immense!!

What should i do with the Rad? How could i identify if there's a leak?

having similar problem but light never comes on when driving only when starting after rested. Changed expansion tank today - will let you know if that helps - keep us posted if you solve this in mean time

cheers

Hope that works, by the way, the expansion tank is the coolant reservoir where you refill the Radiator?

I'll let you know the result of my desperation.

Mine loses coolant through the connector on the expansion tank where the coolant level sensor is plugged in. Totally daft. It's the second tank that's developed a fault. It gives a low coolant warning when it's not low too so I unplugged it, shorted it out and just remember to check it regularly. You can see the orange/pink coolant residue in the socket.

It actually drops under the minimun level, so there's a consumption of the coolant.

Let me uderstand, in your case you changed the tank and the issue came back, then you changed it again, an the issue was the sensor so you unplugged it and there's no consumption any more?

The issue persist after a test that revealed that a seal of a hose that goes to the motor water take was leaking.

Another specialist (not a worker from the garage i took my mean machine) told me that it could be cylinder head gasket that has a leak and the coolant is burnt, and that's the reason why i cannot find a trace of any leak no matter the changes that have been made in the past week.

Ideas please! Another experience to be shared, or a cheer up comment.

I recently had a very bad coolant leak on mine fixed.

It was loosing all of the coolant in a few miles.

Turns out it was the metal pipes that go inside the car into the heater matrix. They were pouring out water but it was running down on to the exhaust and so I never saw any water underneath the car.

Another place to have a look at is the point that the thermostat housing bolts onto the head. Just noticed at the weekend that ours has a weep/leak there, presumably past a heat-stiffened o-ring.

Wino, that;s a great help, but the motor water take was changed (just the the take that has a leak through the small rubber band that seal the take), and they used the old thermostat.

Phil,

Could you please specify the place where those metal pipes are located (i.e. near the radiator, cooling fan, coolant reservoir, etc).

Thanks all in advance.

If water finds its way into the engine cylinders, a loss of power, white smoke from exhaust pipe, engine missing is usually found.

An engine cylinder compression check should detect this, (spark plugs can also be discoloured if a petrol engine).

With engine under-tray removed, from underneath look for signs of water leakage, from all water-pipes metal and rubber and their connections to each other.

Look inside car for heater unit leakage (carpets could be wet) the matrix and metal pipes can leak.

Suspect any furring/rust marks around any connection/joint for leakage.

It actually drops under the minimun level, so there's a consumption of the coolant.

Mine still loses it through the sensor output but not a significant amount. The escaped coolant was triggering the low coolant level warning even when it was full to max so that was why I disconnected it and shorted the contacts.

I hope you find your solution soon.

They are at the back of the engine. From memory they are slightly to the right behind the engine (as you look straight on to the engine bay) and dissappear into the bulhead and into the cab.

The garage said they had corroded and were a little damaged. They replaced them and I think the rubber hoses joining onto them.

Guys,

It seems that the issue was corrected. After changing the motor water take, the mechanic changed the seal of a rubber hose that was leaking, and for now it has stopped.

So, if you have this issue in the future, first go there before losing your mind with other possibilities.

Thanks all for your collaboration!
