1.4 tsi a lemon?

Featured Replies

What do we all think of the 1.4 tsi's longterm reliability?

Personally i think its a bit of a lemon

Me and my partner bought an 06 plate golf gt tsi (1.4 170bhp)

Problems thus far....

2nd gear synchro (manual box)

Rocker cover gasket leak

Injector seals leak

And another gasket? (left of rocker cover?)

Coil pack 4 faulty

All covered under warranty however but its got me worried. Do we now punt the car as the bills for whats been done are around the 2k mark

Cars only done 40k miles aswell :o

  • "Is the 1.4TSI a lemon?" You can say the same about all the VAG engines when they first came out. 1.8T. Water pump failures, diverter valves, N75 valves, thermostats, coil packs, MAF sensors 2.0TF

  • Not forgetting all the parts on the car are 6 years old

The engine thats replacing the 1.4 TSI, is a 1.4 TSI with cylinder shut off technology. so it will be more complicated not less! http://www.greencarc...s-20110902.html

I think any early issue of a piece of technology is going to involve problems, which should then get ironed out as they become apparent. I am sure that VAG will make every effort to get rid of all the issues as the engine is right across the portfolio.

are you having a bubble?

i would expect a VAG car at 6 years old with 40k miles to be leak free.... Not mind all the problems i've had....

on the other hand my mk1 octy vrs 1.8t is immaculate and faultess with double the miles and 6 months older (superior engine)

The gearbox issue is not something id be happy with, however the other faults ie the gasket leaks are not unheard of on a 6 year old car. My coil packs failed on my mk1 vrs within 6 years from new.

yes not unheard of, but rocker cover gasket leak and injector seals, car was at garage for 2 weeks and it was considered a major engine rebuild to get to the injector leak,

i dont have the paperwork as yet but when i do i'll post a copy of it...

2nd gear synchro alone was £780

I havent paid a penny thus far as warranty has covered it so far

I think you may have been slightly unlucky as many ibizas have done that mileage with no problems. its only that we look on forums like these that we know the faults, every other manufacturer has problems we just dont know about them.

As for the synchro maybe your driving too fast lol

Is it a twin charge?

Personally would not run any car out of warranty that was both a performance machine that I did not know the full history; or would be expensive to fix unless I had a secondary warranty in place which have received some good press but I have not used so not totally convinced as it sounds a bit like PPI.

i wont be keeping mine any longer then the warranty its the most problematic car ive owned & that's after owning 3 clios which never went wrong

Yes twin charged 1.4 tsi, 170bhp

It's a massive yellow citrus fruit,

Coil packs are a well-known weak point on a lot of VAG engines so you can’t put that down to the TSi. The manual gearbox is now also known as a weak point. VAG don’t have a suitable manual box which is strong enough for the engine hence all VAG cars with the 180 hp engine only come with DSG box’s. This is a gearbox problem not an engine problem.

But your right rocker box gaskets should not be going at this age or mileage.

I think the most obvious fault is the oil usage, as reported by many people on here. Mine seems better than most only using about 2 litres in the first 10,000 miles but I still think that’s very high compared with most cars.

I think what most people don’t realise is just how highly stressed this engine is. They think well 180 bhp isn’t that much but it's putting out around 127 bhp/ litre. That’s about the same as a Veyron, about 20 bhp/litre than a Lamborghini Aventador. When you look at it this way, the 2 cars above tend to have very low usage and they can’t be used anywhere near as hard as a car with the tsi in. it surprises me that there are not more faults.

Take an Aventador on a track and drive it as hard as the Golf for 40,000 miles and see what problems you come up with then.

At the end of the day though this dosn't help you with the probles with your car.

Yes i've read all the host of issues unfortunately i have most of them :( (well not any more) but how long will my new parts last another 40k? :o

The car has the manual box and is the 170 guess its before they introduced the dsg

I've also read of another injector problem that washes oil of the pistons or something and can knacker the engine.... I believe thats on the 160 tsi though.

Its just all these horror stories im papping myself

Our warranty is via llyods where we bought the car, years warranty. They have done well at fixing it all FOC so far which im rather impressed with as i believe there down about 2k

I'd say it's a lemon. There's something severely amiss with the reliability of the engine and many forums such as Briskoda are alight with unhappy drivers looking for explanation. The oil usage and misfires are the main ones I've noticed and I think on a Polo GTI forum there is speculation the issues are down to something like the piston rings.

Yell have written an article on it... I really think VAG should address this professionally and head on with some form of decent resolution. It's not acceptable.

Little chance of that untill they have their arm twisted behind there back. The old 2.0PD 140/170 engine was fitted in nearly every VAG model except the ver smallest and very biggest. It's one of the biggest volume engines VAG ever made. But it's a lemon, it was rushed out and complex because VAG knew the common rail competition was ahead and the VAG common rail development had only just started.

The 2.0PD suffered early balancer shaft and oil pump failure and was quickly modified but owners started to find injectors were failing wich took out the wiring loom. Four new injectors and loom was £2000.

This issue got that big that a cross forum campaign was started, this forum, vwaudiforums, honest john etc etc. All were asked to email VOSA with injector issues and finally after 2 years of campaigning VOSA ruled that there was a manufacturing fault with the injectors and they were not fit for purpose.

VAG have still not issued a recall but will review each case seperately, if you have full vag service history there is no problem, everyone else has to fight.

So considering how much bad press and ill feeling the 2.0PD generated I don't think VAG will be too bothered about failures on one of there lowest selling engines. It's not good and it isn't right but unless there is a big campaign and their hand is forced they wont do anything.

Cheers

Lee

You raise some interesting points, Lee.

I know my dealer said the early engines suffered problems and the master tech said that people ragging them from new didn't help the oil consumption - having a turbo and super charger they will use more oil but when ragged it uses more if this makes sense?!

I had my first common rail back in 99! 306 hdi!

My tsi doesn't use oil it just leaks it (or used to)

Sadly, my nephew who runs his own bodyshop and workshop sees far too many TSI twin charged engines in with big problems. Most still in warranty. He's says if it's not under warranty, don't buy one as the engine is very short life and is prohibitively expensive to repair. But no one should be surprised at this, as indicated by others, it's a performance engine and isn't really designed to last a long time from what I can see, and it's made worse by VW's famously bad quality control on some builds. Anyhoo...the engine is being done away with so it's unlikely it will ever be as good as it could.

Reference?

dont think there is one BUT, i think I might have read somewhere that less powerful versions of the 1.6 TFSI 200 (turbo only) will be replacing the twincharged 1.4. However I could be wrong!

Yup i read report on the death of the tsi

Too expensive to make and maintain VAG rekon

I heard the same - all going to 1.6T as the rally cars etc are using them or something :D
