When filling up

Featured Replies

Right guys, I have an 05 Fabia VRS. When im filling up with fuel the pump always seems to 'click off' from about £8. Doesnt matter which angle I hold it it still happens. Any ideas?

Please elaborate. I don't quite understand. Does the pump turn off every 8 quid? If you hold it with your hand and just let the minimum amount of fuel through, does it click of then as well? Or only if you're running it at max?

Its possible that there is some sort of blockage in the fuel line from the cap to the tank. Had the same issue on the Volvo my driving school had back in the day.

I drove from Bristol to the French alps in march (not my car, pug 406 diesel) and at all bar 1 service station, I could only get 16-20 euros of fuel. (yeah it took bloody ages!!)

My issue apparently was the different flow rates of the pumps and the car I was driving just didn't like them.

Have you tried different pumps and stations?

Have you always had this problem or just developed it?

Ive just got the car. Basically, I put the pump in and start to fill up pressing the handle all the way. It gets to about £8 then starts clicking off so that I can only hold it half way with reduced flow. Ive been to a few different filling stations and theyre all the same

You have crap in the fuel line. Have it checked or check it yourself. That sounds consistent with the Volvo.

When you open you fuel tank on the right side about 2/3 cm into the tube you will see a "nipple". Use the fuel gun and press into it. (push forward into the fuel tank) this will let the air from the expanding chamber and will let you fuel the car much quicker and into the rim.

This is known as "venting" use google to learn more but almost all cars from VAG group have it.

My Fabia fuel tank is 45LT as per books, but after the low warning light is on, I can put 51/52 litres of diesel with venting

I inadvertently did this last night due to having to pull the hose round to the far side of the car, filling up at about the 8 o'clock position is enough to hit the black button and allow the pressure build up to vent. My calculated mpg obviously dropped massively (10mpg) but it'll even out with the next normal fill and the needle won't budge from full for roughly 150 miles. It's off-putting when you first do it if you don't know as you begin to wonder how you've managed to pack 50+ ltrs in a 45ltr tank.

I sometimes get this. I find I have to angle the nozzle slightly to get it to carry on.

Will be brimming the tank next week as we're going to Germany and can't be bothered stopping at motorway service stations for fuel.

I know it could be a bit of a shock the first time around but after that is great. On my TDI PD Fabia if I am on a long run the first time the fuel gage is moving is around 240/250 miles mark. One other advantage is that if you do this on a TDI and you drive reasonably you are looking at 650 miles per tank :)

I don't know how is with the petrol version.

On my mpi it

From necked to 3/4 is normally 150 miles on my mpi, with it vented i'll do 150 miles before the needle begins to move, tank range is extended from 400 miles to 500 miles depending on how you drive, it's handy when doing a long run or in my case it allows a week between filling up as opposed to 4-5 working days.

Even if it's 25p per litre cheaper?

Not on the motorway service stations it's not! If we wait till we get there we can get it from a local petrol station for less. Plus it's just easier to fill right up and not have to worry about it then.

And if we wait till monday or tuesday the following it will be even cheaper (I think they are their cheap fuel days).
