LED DRL's

Featured Replies

Hi has anyone here retrofitted the new style DRL's to their car and know how much they cost? The brightness is really good compared with other cars on the road.

Are we talking vRS here? This is the only Octavia with LED DRL's.

I therefore assume we are talking about retrofitting them to the pre-facelift?

In which case you'll have a hard time retro-fitting them as they are shaped to fit the facelift bumper, they are also very expensive.

There are a few members who have fitted some of the aftermarket LED kits, not my cup of tea as I prefer the OEM look and the pre-FL doesn't have separate DRL's - search for "LED DRL's" and you'll get plenty of results.

If your after LED DRL's for your pr-FL Octavia then I would go with a good quality aftermarket kit as the OEM DRL units are both expensive and due to their size difficult to retro fit into a gap not designed for them.

I recommend this kit, uses 5 x 1w LEDs per unit with brightness and colour that TRULY matches OEM

Heres a pic with them fitted on my RX8, it's daylight and they are as bright as they look in the picture!

Same kit fitted my my MG ZR just a litter darker outside

Hi there thanks for those pictures, do those units dim though? I was talking about the vRS drls and just wanted to know if the dimming module for them are built into the drl as a separate unit. If separate I would have to factor in a suitable dimming module such as those used on the Audi S6 drls.

They don't dim but switch off, They have 3 wires to them.

1. Live 2. Earth 3.Headlight live(when this becomes live the drls go off

You could however dim them using a 4 pin relay and a Pulse width modulator (PWM) like this one (its simple + cheap, you could always remove the outer casing)

Actually my Scout came with OEM LED Drl's.

OK I should have said 'as standard', the Scout's are a cost option.

There is a lot of space behind the LED DRL's so it wouldn't suprise me if the dimming module is built in...

Can anyone confirm please if their DRL's dim when the headlamps come on or just switch off? I have seen Audi S6 DRL units that come with a separate dimming module but the LED housings are huge, which implies that just because they are big doesn't mean that the module is built in. Even after-market units I've seen have separate dimming modules (ballasts).

The DRLS' dim with headlights and mine also dim on indicator (thanks Carl :-)). Note they MUST dim or go off altogether to satisfy the law; I saw some muppet in an MGZ the other day running arounf town at night with only DRL's and sidelights and they were blinding other road users..........Had my trusty alloy bat been to hand I might have been tempted to "educate" the driver.....

If you do for for aftermarket PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD be careful about which ones you buy and how you mount them. There are some truly awful aftermarket "upgrades" running around out there :giggle:

I mounted a set of RING ones on my pre FL in the two outer sections of the lower grille and I believe somebody else on here has also done the same. If you do it right it looks as close to OEM as you are going to get.

Yup that would be me :)

The only issue I had with the Ring set I had is that they didn't work with the dimming kit that I had. They did seem to want to be "all or nothing" in terms of voltage.

I think it's vRS_Pagey you're thinking of who did the same as you. ;)

I think i was the first one (to post anyway) who did it with LED DRL's. I know one person did it with CCFL tubing but can't think of the name. ;)

Ah, I stand corrected.

(That was before my Octy ownership had begun ;) )

If anyone is going to do it themselves i highly recommend these.

I know they are expensive but i replaced the ones in the tutorial above with these and they are very very simple to install (took me about an hour) and work as if factory installed (i.e dim when headlights come on).

The quality far exceeds that of the cheaper ones (that's not to say the cheaper aren't decent quality).

Hi Carl do the Philips ones above dim as well? Also have you got the Octavia II model as the outer parts of the bumper are angled quite a bit so you need a curved LED units where the the housing is curved but the LED's still point in the direction of travel, if you know what I mean. The OEM vRS DRL's do that as do the Audi S6 ones. If the bumper is straight I find that normal straight DRL units would suffice but it's curved bumpers that require more thought when choosing DRL's otherwise all the light shines out sideways rather than in the direction of travel.

I had these on my Pre-FL vRS as you can see in the pic. I also had a set on my Pre-FL L&K. I have an FL vRS now which has the factory fit DRL.

The Phillips ones will dim when the headlights come on (assuming you install them as per the instructions. The Phillips ones also have a certain field of view to accommodate curved bumpers. I can't remember what it is off the top of my head but an Octavia bumper is fine.

There is a demo video for the install on facetube, I'll dig it out later and post it up. :)

If anyone is going to do it themselves i highly recommend these.

I know they are expensive...

£180!?

Stick it in the bank and put it towards a FL vRS with them already fitted.

LED DRL's will never look OEM on the pre-FL as it never had them so it'll always look like your trying a little too hard...

As I said expensive but very good. They have rocketed in price though. I paid £118 but it was nearly 2 yrs ago.

£180 is a long way off a £18k+ vRS. I think mine and Lee's cars show they can look good if fitted properly but ETTO

If you are going to do it then I agree you should spend the money and do it properly.

There is nothing more tacky than badly aligned/dim/spaced out/wrong colour retro fit DRL's.

The Philips ones are the closest to OEM I've ever seen...

These were the old style ones. I can't find a pic of the newer ones.

Here is the Philips install Video.

No you don't. Most of them work by running a wire to the headlight wiring connector. Which when you switch the headlights on dims the DRL.

Then you have the LED DRL reduced to be used as parking lights like FL VRS Octavias have, among other makes these days
