I need your advice on roof box options for Mk1 2005 vrs saloon

Featured Replies

I'm all out of boot space when we go on holiday with the kids, need roof bars and a box to get the push chair up top. What are the best fitting bars for the factory fit points? I see Thule do a set, I think it's 753 feet, 760 bars but I have no clue what this 3003 fitting kit is all about. I think the factory fit bars should have a 'C' type jaw which opens and closes into the mounting point on the roof but possibly one of you could advise me before I buy some cheap piece of crap which doesn't fit!

Also, what size box will sit right on the Mk1, up to about 500 litre capacity, does that sound about right?

I have a set of thule roof bars which clamp to the roof bars on the estate. Quality and sturdiness is great and I use them a logg. If I recall the maximum recommended load on the Octavia roof is 90kg if that helps.

if you want a quality setup go for thule... they have a fitment guide on their website.

the 3003 fixpoint are the "c" type jaws you mentioned

753's cover the 3003's and lock these, so no random stranger can get your bars off without effort

if you're planning on leaving the bars up all the time i'd recommend the aero bars, as they are less noisy

only downside is: the kit, although compatible with skoda's, was not designed specifically for them, so the plastic of the 753's leaves a small gap to the roof (as seen in the pic)

How much are a set of skoda ones because i was in halfrods a couple of months ago and my mate priced some thule roof bars for his clio and i nearly died when we worked out how much complete setup was.

I was quiet thankful i had a towbar at that point and would just get a luggage rack that fitted to that if i ever needed extra space

I managed to bag a set of roof bars for under a Tenner off ebay can't remember the make but think they start with a m lol. Uses the proper mounting points too. Only fitted them once to check they fit, haven't had any excuse to use them since. Think I only brought them because I was messing on ebay lol.

Now in the process of fitting a tow bar so I can get a trailer, but only because I've always wanted one dunno why lol.

What about getting a trailer? Easier to pack, would have to drive slower but should save mpg over a roof box.

Every man should have at least one trailer, imho. Must better than putting dirty cr@p into the car (or you need a second car!)

Just make sure its a westfilia detachable or equivelent as fixed bars look crap on VRS's

Its a fixed got it for 20 quid, the bar bit just attaches with 2 bolts leaving the bracket visible at the bottom but doesn't look too bad, tryin to find a socket bracket that swings up but can't find one anywhere, spent ages on ebay lookin but no luck any ideas?
