Lamin-X

Featured Replies

Im considering smoking my lctavia's headlights when i get and after looking at a few options think im going to go with lamin x however I dont want them too dark just a nice subtle smoke

What are peoples thoughts on Lamin-x?

Is it the bet way to smoke the headlights?

Also what are peoples experiences of applying it, is it fairly straight forward?

I'm interested in this too. Not cheap though as you need a sizeable piece to cover the octy II headlights.

I did mine with the smoked tint, its subtle but works a treat. I applied it to the fogs and uses their blue tint to the side indicators.

Some pics if possible please , been toying with this idea too. One question regarding legal issues with the rear lights and lamin x ...on the VRS , do the lower rear relectors count as reflectors? Donkey years ago i did the old black tint rear lights ( fiat uno, that long ago ). But had to mask out the rear reflector in the middle of the light cluster to keep them legal. Hence the question , with a black Octavia it really appeals once it does not look too too chavy.

It's pretty easy to use and my advise would be to lightly mist the lights with water just before you put the lamin-x on there as I found this helps of you need to pull it off and re-apply in places if you slightly mess it up.

Cheers for that pretty much exactly as what I'm doing to octavia with grill and lights, looks miles better doesn't it, glad my fabia came with black pack

No worries dude.

Yeah I think it looks much better like that. Went for the lightest shade so not to loose too much light!

I've since put the fog lights in the body shop which I thinks finishes it off ...

Looking good, I`ve got some Lamin-x subtle tint getting delivered very shortly. I will be doing my Mk1 vrs next week along with colour coding the chrome grill, and fitting some DRL`s

Im impressed and happy :), as soon as dealer gets the car in ill be up there measuring lights up so i can get some ordered haha

Yeah , nice and subtle :bandit:

At the risk of getting shouted down - gotta ask why would you want to smoke your headlights?

Most people want to improve the light output so putting a filter in place seems borderline lunacy and I guarantee if you are involved in a serious accident, fingers will be pointed.

It also give the Plod a good excuse to tug you and issue you with a defect notice.

sort ur facts out it does,nt reduce nor tint the output. plenty of factory built models are tinted front and rear. it improves the appearance.

"sort ur facts out"??!!!

PMSL!! I

So putting a tinted film on your headlights doesn't reduce the light output?

Last time I checked, Lamin-x tends to be used on competition / track day cars to protect the lenses from damage or to alter the light colour to comply with specific motorsport regulations. Taken from the website FAQ:

The 'tint' or 'coloured' aspect came about when Lemans race teams needed a way to categorise different race car classes while racing at the same time on the same track. You have probably seen many a race car wearing our distinctive Yellow tinted headlight protection film. Maybe not so many wearing our Clear Light protection film...as its so optically clear.

Sorry I must have misunderstood - your Octy Estate is a compeition car! :giggle:

I totally get the protective bit but there is no way you can tell me that the tinted films don't reduce the light output.

Again taken from the Lamin-x website;

"Is your tinted / coloured light protection road legal?"

Our coloured/tinted headlamp protection films may not be legal for road use on primary lighting in your country. An off-road use disclosure is hereby declared. Please check your local laws before application if you have concerns. Installation of our tinted protection film on your head lights or fog lamps is done so at your own risk. Our light protection films are manufactured primarily for the motorsport industry.

The law/Mot hand book within the UK states that front primary lighting must produce a White or Yellow light. There is no documentation about the colour of the actual lens.

Our Clear/SubtleTint/GunSmoke/OpticBlue light protection films all produce a legal natural light colour, and our Yellow produces a Yellow tinted light which is of course perfectly legal within the UK.

None of our light protection films change/adjust the beam pattern. Our GunSmoke light protection film can reduce light output in some cases.

I think the last line answers the question of reduction of light output.

Hey, it's up to you - I'm totally up for protecting the headlights from damage but tinting them? I just don't get the point of reducing the effectivness of your headlights just because it (questionably) "improves the appearance"!

BTW: what is your experience with the VentureShield? I'm thinking of doing the front of mine but was wondering how it holds up to normal wear and tear?

Not been funny but its my car i do what i want you dont like it then thats why YOU havnt do it to yours, the reason im doing it is to improve in my opinion the look as black grill black wheels and chrome lights would look naff, and i dont want it to be like every other octavia on the road hence the red choice of colour instead of blue or white

and also whats the reason in DRL's? Is it to improve the cars visibility to others? And if police pull ill take the information to say the stuff is legal and if they disagree then that'll be something i take up with the company i purchase the film from

  • Author

Oh and if you are right and it does severely reduce my visibility when driving at night then i will take them off or get some stronger bulbs

Yeah , nice and subtle :bandit:

It is compared to the darkest tint!
