motorway economy

Featured Replies

getting about 50 mpg around town but about 40mpg on the motorway at 70mph. Does this seem low and if so how can it be improved. Im driving mk1 octavia estate 1.9tdi.

at a steady 70 you should be getting more than that? I have a 1.8T petrol 4x4 and at a steady 70 I am getting 35+mpg my wifes passat is a pd130 and that gives around 55-60 at motorway speeds

I'm rocking a 1.9TDi Fabia and when i'm Motorwaying about if i'm doing a steady 70 I average about 61mpg.

I guess it's one of lifes great mysteries that will never be understood.

I'd check tyre pressures for starters but thats a bit of an obvious one, if your turbo isn't working properly I think that has a bit of an effect on your fuel economy.

When you're at 70 where do your revs normally sit?

I've been having the same issue in my Leon. Strange how the economy is better around town.

Check your air filter and CTS to start with. Also as above check your tyre pressures are correct and that your brakes aren't binding at all. Next up would be MAF and n75.

Which flavour of TDI do you have? 90, 110, 130?

We had a Mk1 and now have a Mk2 1.9 TDI. Both should easily manage around 55-56 MPG on the motorway... It dropped for us so we had the car serviced (filters, oil change etc) and all was well again.

My 90 brake 1.9 gets about 55-60 on motorway (75mph in ireland)

My Vrs gets 40-43mpg on the motorway at steady 70-80 . Around town about 35mpg

i get 52 mpg actual (from brim filling) combination of mway and rural. interestingly it only dropped to 49mpg the tank i used for castle combe weekend

40-43 is amazing doing 70-80mph. I have just finished a 70 mile trip at 80 and got 35 mpg.

If the motorway was mainly downhill you might get 40 mpg if your lucky

Very recently had service which included all filters and tyre pressures so they should be ok.

The exhaust is blowing slightly. wheel allignment is slightly out and bumper has damage. ill be getting them all sorted as soon as finances allow. vagcom finds no faults.

Might be the exhaust then. It will drink a lot more juice if there's a hole in the exhaust. As the others have said you should easily get 50-60mpg out of a diesel on the motorway, and maybe 45-50 around town.
