imac, snow leopard and parallels running xp (not for internet).

NO firewall or virus checking. In 6 years never had to reinstall o/s or upgrade ram memory.

I think in 6 years only had my mac freeze/ reboot twice

1 x Viglen MPC-L running Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS (Hardy Heron) - Linux Server for Home Automation System.

1 x Samsung Series 7 with i7 2.2 GHz, 8 GB Ram and 17.3" Display

1 x Custom PC running:

- Intel i7 860 quad core. 3.81Ghz (Not Overclocked, Honest)

- Corsair H70 Liquid CPU Cooler

- 1 TB HDD

- Radeon 6950 HD 2GB Twin Graphics Card

- Asus P7P55D Mobo

- All the other gubbins such as cathodes, PSU, fans etc...

1 x Linux Media PC, Spec isn't impressive but it's running 'Boxee' at the moment which I'm happy with.

Looking at Android tablets at the moment but can't see a 'real use' yet as my Desire HD (Rooted - Sense 3.5 with Android Revolution HD 7.0.0 and Android v2.3.5) does everything that I would use a tablet for.

Lenovo Ideapad z575, upgraded to 8 gb ram, amd quadcore processor.

Any chance I could have your IP please? I could do with some extra processing power.

did you get change from a million pounds? Sony tax is pretty much equal to Apple tax!

It isn't, with Sony you get what you pay for so while they are expensive you're usually getting cutting edge technology which can take years to come to other brands including Apple. Also Sony don't currently fix their prices as rigidly as Apple which means bargains can be had, the Vaio Z5 was £850 when a maxed out Macbook was about £3,000 and still didn't even come remotely close to the Vaio's spec (dual SSDs vs single SSD, hi-res screen vs low res screen, two graphics cards vs one graphics card, blu-ray writer vs DVD writer). Similarly I managed to get a bargain on my older Vaios (11.1in Ultralight and a 4.5in UMPC) through voucher codes and cashback offers.

Currently, a 5 year old 24" iMac.

My iPad or SGSII for when I'm mobile.

IMO the best combination of desktop, tablet and phone available.

I also have a Dell netbook that is seldom used and a Macbook I gave to my Mum.

I don't have a static ip addr

my 3.4ghz QuadCore i7 iMac 27" with 8 gig of ram and 3 gig of graphics ram arrived on Monday last week....

.... it was taken away on Tuesday this week, as it crashed 5 times day 1, 4 times day 2 and 7 times on day 3.

so, back to the old core-2-duo 24"iMac for a while!

I'm not getting it replaced, just a full refund for a useless piece of tech. - I'm a Professional user, and dont expect this from top-end Apple products!

Al.

Oh dear. Go and spec a PC to that level and save yourself some dosh! lol

At the moment I'm using a Toshiba Satellite A210-11P running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit (Spec: AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-56, 3Gb RAM, ATI Radion HD 2600 (256Mb), 200Gb HDD), soon to be a Dell XPS running Windows 7 (Intel i5-460M, 8Gb RAM, nVidia GeForce GT 420M (1Gb), 500Gb HDD)

I don't have a static ip addr

That's ok it's easy to put in dynamic dns so I always know your ip, just need to find you once.

Ta

try and ping me!

try and ping me!

Think you're missing the point...

Don't want to run AV fine.

Not running a firewall at all, that's just daft.

sshd, X11 (if you're using it), smbd, cupsd and a host of other services are running and easily accessible once you're there.

FWIW, while I can't see your IP (As I don't have server log rights on the site) anyone who can see you visit any site on the web via the logs will get your current IP every time you come.

Once they have it, it's a doddle to put in a root exploit, hook you up to dyndns and keep you ready for doing whatever they like.

Mac OS will not permit this.

In order for there to have been a root exploit, the system login items would have to run as the root user. Something like that would have been noticed because the files such an application would create would be owned by root, causing all kinds of trouble. I don't think anyone running Snow Leopard, has anything to worry about.

I run virus checks when I share my files with Windows friends

Really....

So you can't hack a BSD/Linux system either then right?

Seriously you can use a remote exploit to get you access to a box and then use a local exploit to get you root.

Do you think the mac sudo protects you from buffer overflows and those sort of exploits.

Pushing things into the memory of tasks that run as root also works too if there is an issue there. That won't leave anything odd.

People can clean up after themselves and there is also the chown command, that can see to files with the wrong owners.

If you're so confident, then you won't be worried about putting your details up all over the internet and allowing everyone to have a go.

I'm not saying I want to have a go, but seriously, stop believing the hype and take security seriously.

There was a mac exploit thatn ran via their outdated version of java, there have been other ways of getting in.

Sure windows might have a lot more issues, but don't think that it's impossible for you to get caught.

It isn't.

Set the firewall up on your internet router and use it properly!

Yeessssssssss!!!!

An old Dell Latitude D620 laptop running Windows XP, 1.8Ghz, 3.5Gb RAM, 74.5Gb Hard Drive. Goes fine but takes ages to shut down, have tried a couple of things but still not found a solution. Think I'll need to find a tame computer engineer and see if they can fix it for me.

Yeessssssssss!!!!

Go on then: 94.15.28.138

Go on then: 94.15.28.138

What happens if the password 'Joshua' doesn't stop the "Global Thermonuclear War"?!!!

Go on then: 94.15.28.138

Yes but I know what you're sat behind, and I'd guess that's well patched ;)

The point I'm making is turn you're bleeding firewall on! (Which obviously your draytek will be doing fine)
