New Car - Wind Noise

Featured Replies

I had the door adjustment done a couple of days ago and it has hushed things up a bit and stopped my mobile shower in the rain. But that whistle sounds like a different problem.

Try the door adjustment just to rule it out.

My previous post in May was about the same issue. I recorded the noise on my MP3 player and played that to the service manager at Royce Roberts,Hull and he dealt with it by firstly adjusting the door hinges and after that didn't work replaced the door seals with approval from Skoda UK under warranty. That has cured mine. As I previously posted he found something on his computer system from Skoda UK and printed it out when he dealt with mine, so it is something that Skoda knows about as they have offered a fix to dealers. If they can find it on their system then your dealer should be able to do so aswell.

The noise was the same as that on the video posted by mjvalentine.

Ok thanks for the suggestions guys. Ill suggest to the garage that they change the door seals. Just to clarify, do you mean the rubber seal on the door or the one on the body? Hopefully they will find the fix on their computer.

I think its the door frame seal.

Haven't updated this thread for a while but my dealer did confirm that they had another car in with the same problem (a year older) and had some further suggestions from Skoda UK re a fix (one solution was replacing rubber grommets in the bulkhead).Just been on holiday so am going to call them this week and see if there is any update / see if my car needs to go back in again. Will keep you posted.

Just got my car back from the dealer and it is fixed. Turned out it wasn't the door seals, but was the front grill. There was a (recent) entry on their computer (TIS?) with the solution. Tbh looking at the car, I can't see what they modified. I read the details they had and it involved sticking a felt strip to the inside of the grill somewhere. Seems to have solved the whistling sound 100% so may be of use to other people with the same issue.

Wind Noise.

Hi

I work for a car leasing company so get to drive a few different cars.

Have a new VRS Oct with the same problem.

If you stand in front of your car the noise is generated at speed by air passing around the silver chrome/plastic grill surround.

I taped up the entire front end and slowly removed tape until the noise reappeared.

A bit of tape (for now) around the left, top and right side of the silver surround will cure it.

My car is black so tape colour was not an issue. As for you I guess any insulation tape will do for now.

I assume the garage could seal the gap between the surround and bonnet with a fine sealant.

My car is only with me for a month so I'll stick with the tape. It is an annoying whistle though.

Good luck and let me know the outcome

Quick update on this. Car was in the garage today for the 3rd attempt at tracing / fixing the noise and while not wanting to tempt fate I think it is now fixed!! As per MJValentine / Spaceman1970 the "fix" is to the grill which they did and a quick spin up the motorway would indicate there is no noise anymore. Popped the bonnet and had a look to see what was done and to be honest I can't see anything different but not that fussed if it is fixed now.

Sounds like I had the exact same issue with my car. Noise coming from the front of the car (not the doors) at motorway speeds.

Luckily, my car was booked in around the time that this fix was posted on the systems so my dealer was able to fix it very easily. They didn't go into much detail about what the problem was but they indicated that it had something to do with the airflow around the front grill (which matches up with what has been posted here).

Mine also has wind noise coming from back somewhere - very annoying

Need to investigate closer

Resuscitating this thread it would be really good to see a photo of what the fix was. I am in two minds as the onset of the whistling sound acts as a speed alarm but it is also very annoying.

Mornin' chaps (and chapesses!)

Think I have same problem with whistling on my new FL- it's going in to get one of the seat covers changed under warranty on Tuesday- would appreciate any info on what the fix is/ photos etc.so I can get that sorted too! Noise starts at about 75 to 80.

guess what ........took delivery of our new vrs on Tuesday, drove it too Devon on its first long drive and we have the whistle too. guess I'll be calling the dealer on Monday once back from holiday .

I will take delivery of my vrs in November and it looks like a 75 - 80 mph test drive first on the bypass before I do anything else, to see if mine is going to suffer the same issue. You would think skoda uk would contact the factory where they are built and update the door seals to correct this ongoing issue before any customers receive there cars.

This still won't put me of this great car though.

yeah we love ours.

Here is a picture of the area of the "fix". Its not the easiest of places to photograph unfortunately. If you open the bonnet and look at the top rear-side of the chrome grill, where it meets the metal of the bonnet then the fix is to stick a strip of foam to fill this gap. Presumably the dealer had to remove the grill to stick this to the rear side of the grill and then re-attach it. The noise was apparently due to airflow being disturbed in the area of this gap between the grill and the bonnet. I've since done 1500 miles and the whistling has not returned, would advise you to just take it to the dealer and let them fix it under warranty, the fix is on their computer system.

cheers for that.

That sounds like the problem I have it only happens at 70+ its blooming annoying

Will book it into the local dealer as they have been really good with the car.

Many thanks to mjvalentine- printed the pic and took to dealer, work carried out.... hey presto- no whistling.

For anybody out there suffering and still in warranty, quote TPI Note 2030299/1 to your dealer. It is definitely

on their system.

Hi, i have new octavia estate since first of september and have same issue. Its really annoying especially on new car. Until now i saw myself at endless trying of putting tape on door seal and go on higway run trying to find place where whistling is coming from.....horrible.....or my nightmare - x visits of dealer which will propably change half of my car without any result, eventually they will tell me they dont know how to solve it. You help me a lot and calm me down.

Thank you very very much for photo and solution.

Best Skoda forum ever.

mines booked in for this Saturday to have the fix applied!

Same here mines all fixed too.

Had mine in at the dealer the other day, went for a drive but due to calm sunny day (hey its Scotland!) had to hit over 80 before it came on. Left the car for duration of day - back to discover that they were unable to trace it despite them ruling out the door seals(different noise) during the drive and me telling them it was likely to be the front grill :@ .

They say it will need to be left for a few days - I dont fancy swapping it for a base model citigo though.

Maybe I should take the 59 plate TSI in at the same time and let them compare since this has never had any noise...

New car delivered last week and extremely pleased with it. However, I too have this high pitched noise circa 80 - 90 mph (and no it wasn't the wife telling me to slow down!) - it was quite frustrating on a 550 mile round trip to Southern Germany yesterday.

Just to confuse matters further, I did notice that there is a gap between the wing and the rhs front light unit when swapping UK to continental lights (i.e. rubber seal not in contact with wing to prevnt ingress of air / water) - I didn't notice this gap with the UK lights fitted and the noise wasn't present on my drive over from UK. The Skoda tech here in Germany has agreed that the headlight mounting plate requires adjustment - just a thought?

Black_sheep,

i have the same problem and never drove with the UK's in swapped straight to the Continentals at Griffin. when the snow goes think i will try putting the UK's in and see were that goes.
