broken rear spring :( VRS!

Featured Replies

hi all as the title saids my rear spring is broken which tbh aint the best time for it to happen due to the fact that my money is abit tight atm. but it has also made me think about lowering springs as i looked into the cost of just standard springs and tbh whats to say i change the back and then the front goes 2-3months down the line which then means i have spent over 200pounds. which to me looking at h&r springs seems to be the better option but then at the same time i again i dont have that kind of money and to make matters worse my mot is due in 1-2months. so i was hopeing u guys/girls might be able to help me out as i am wondering is there anything cheaper out there then the h&r springs besides standard springs that might work just as well as the h&r springs as i have looked around and seen a few but i aint too sure on them and i have tryed looking into them and dont seem to get very far. i know this topic has been covered many times but i really am in abit of a problem and hopeing that an answer will come threw.

thanks all

Dont forget to factor in the increased insurance premium when pricing up lowering springs, and the labour charge to fit them. The rear is a piece of cake, but the fronts need to have the struts removed and dismantled to fit the springs.

Price up a full set of standard springs from a dealer then do the same for lowering springs and see if there's much difference. As said you have to factor in the cost of fitting them which is going to be probably £100 or so - a couple of hours labour.

If you buy lowering springs from a performance parts company like Demon Tweeks they can do finance deals so you pay over 10 or 12 months if the money is tight.

But like Manny said you might find your insurance goes up a bit (mine didn't change for fitting coilovers to my VRS and lowering it 20mm but that was with Adrian Flux)

i did do a price check useing eurocarparts as a rough guide and back springs r about 55pounds each plus fitting from my local mechanic was i think 30pounds a pair so works out about the 150pound mark but as said just the rears as fronts r ok atm lowering springs all round about 170pounds plus then fitting will be of course more as theres more work involved so might work out better just to change rears for now then maybe next year coilovers as all of you seem to point in that direction and by then money wont be such an issue

Plus, you definitely don't want to be lowering the back, and then doing the front later. The headlights will be pointing at the sky, and the handling will be terrible.

Before you buy, put in the model number of another non-vRS version of an Octavia saloon, to check that Euro Car Parts' system comes up with a different number for coil springs. If it comes up with the same number as you've been given for the vRS, then you need to go to TPS, or a dealer. You don't want to end up unwittingly increasing the ride height!

Also, you will most likely need to purchase new rear bump stops I suspect. They seem to get eaten pretty quickly.

If you need any help confirming the correct ones, feel free to drop us a PM :-)

Well normally lowering springs r x4 so would of course lower all corners but I will start looking at quotes when I get paid and just have stock springs done for now and the end of the year get some coilovers but thanks all for your help. The other question I was going to ask is does anyone know how to reset service message as mine has come up ??

why dont you buy a pair from the breakers for about £10 and fit them yourself

jack rear of car off the floor undo 1 bolt and slide in !!!! really is that simple!!!!!!!

its it the one that saids vrs in black ??

Not wanting to p1$$ on anyones sales, but I really don't agree with using second hand springs unless the mileage is proven to be REALLY low. Mine were absolutely sh@gged silly at 49,000 miles.

its all about money for the op so second hand is fine as a make do

normally i would agree with you there but atm i need something to sort out the rear coil spring so it can at least pass its mot then at a later date say oct-nov time i will get some coil overs and sort it all out once and for all. but atm till i get the money together i am still looking into other options etc one of them being finding out what my local mechanic could charge me in total as last time he guessed a price of 40pounds for a pair of rear coil springs and 30pounds to fit the pair but no garentee of that price when eurocarparts wanted 55pounds for each one. the other option my brother said to me earlier is a second hand set of lowering springs front and rear but i am not 100% sure if say finding just octavia 1.8t will work with the vrs et.

Worst case, but one new spring then (£55 minus 30% discount is less than 40quid) for a brand new, safe spring.

euro car parts what planet you on why on earth would someone buy 1 new spring thats not very good advise imo

always pair springs

Are the ECP ones the correct size for the VRS anyway? From what gets told on here its a dealer only part.

My rear ones arn't OEM, there is a firm that specializes in replacement springs for sporty models of mainstream cars such as the Vrs, got them from my local motor factors and they were marked Vrs octavia on the box no other vag models were mentioned on the box

Interesting, and the ride height is the same?

Yup ride height is roughly the same, double checked by backing up to another Vrs and as I had my tool box in the back it was a lil lower lol.

Defo not standard springs passed off as Vrs ones!

i think thats what my local mechanic mentioned to me that he knows of a company that do springs like that no oem but just as good at stock height so therefore he can get them cheaper will give him a ring when i can and see what price he comes up with but all i remember him saying was 40 for a pair of springs and 30pounds fitting the pair so was very reasonable

You are correct but the OP doesn't even want to buy new springs so in my opinion 1 new spring is better than 2 used/ unmatched springs......

Err one new spring will turn the car into a death trap with really dodgy handling, 2 used springs from a vrs would be matched to each other so would be safer, causing no problems handling wise.

Remind me never to ask ECP for advise are full of bull!!

One of the guys I work with had just one rear spring replaced on his Astra last week so it would pass an MOT.

When I looked shocked that the garage would even do that he told me they'd assured him it was fine!

:(
