Recommend an Independent Garage in Kent - Turbo replacement

Featured Replies

Hi, I've always used main dealers, but as my car is now reaching the 5 year old mark and the fact that the extended warranty has expired (due to covering over 100K), can anyone recommend a good indy garage in the kent area. The problem I have experinced is the age old known issue of power loss, restart the engine and everythings fine. So I guess a new turbo is required. The other question is whether to go with a standard replacement or I've been looking into a hybrid from Turbo Technics (for £660). I must admit I don't plan on remapping (or perhaps I should) as I honestly don't know alot about it. Your thoughts and suggestions would be gratefully recevied, many thanks.

I can very safely recommend Kelly at http://www.kdskeltec.co.uk/index.phtml Based in Gillingham.

He is very good and knows his stuff, and very well priced, Have a look at some of the cars he has worked on,

When he serviced my MK1 Oct'y he was just finishing off a Ferrari 512 TR.

Hi Mike, many hanks for the recommendation, I'll drop Kelly a line and will let you know, cheers

That's ok.

Where abouts are you in Kent?

Chatham, so not far from Kelly's garage

A turbo problem wouldn't normally go away on restart.

I was lead to believe that if the vanes are sticking you would lose power but by restarting would reset and clear the problem until the next time ? The time it happened to me was when I was accelareting uphill in 5th, I lost accelaration and was only able to continue at 50mph. I stopped, turned the engine off and restarted and was then able to accelarate as normal. I must admit its only happened the once, but as the car has cover nearly 110K I just assumed it was a fault with the turbo. Of course, I would get the car checked properly before going with a turbo change but I was just pre-empting it.

The turbo problem itself doesn't go away, but a restart will often bring the ECU out of limp-home mode making the turbo appear to work normally again for a while, until the next time it flags an overboost problem.

If it is coking, then a strip and clean of the turbo will be a huge amount cheaper than a replacement. It's only the exhaust side that needs removed, the turbo core remains intact.

Can this be cleaned in situ or does the turbo need to be removed ?

It needs removed to be certain. I believe there are products which claim to decoke turbos, but I don't think you could rely on them. Nothing competes with a physical strip and clean.

cj, i have sent Kelly a link to this thread for you.

Hi CJ, did you have any luck contacting Kelly?

As an aside, just got this months new Evo mag, and theres a picture of Kelly on p124

Hi Mike, going to call him tomorrow. The car has gone into limp mode 3 times now :S

Now, the thing is do I go for a hybrid from Turbo Technics (or can anyone recommend another good turbo supplier, I must admit I have limited knowledge as I never had to change one) or buy a standard refurb ? I would like to keep the car for at least another year. Its currently cover 108K, I've owned it from new, its been regularly serviced, ok its got a few stonechips but its still a good car. It still gives me 50+ mpg on a run (I cover 20K miles a year) and it suits my needs

If your not remapping then a hybrid isn't really needed. I would stick with standard and save a bit of money.

Hi Storm, thanks for your reply, I guess I'd have to contact TT for a price on a standard as they don't list them online. Strange as they list prices for the hybrids, its £660 inc vat and postage + £75 + vat surcharge for my car:

Just got a quote for an exchange turbo from Turbo Technics, £488.40 that includes vat and delivery, I would £90 back for the surcharge, so in the end it would cost £398.40. I've contacted Kelly, just waiting for them to call back with a price for fitting

not received a call from Kelly, I'll give it another go on Monday

Best pop down to see Kelly, as i know he is busy and can sometimes forget to call back.

Hi Mike, I'll try calling again tomorrow, what time does he open/close ?

sorry only just seen this, think he is there from 8.30 till about 5.

Hi Mike, many thanks, I'll let you know

The car has gone into limp mode 5 times since the 9th May, I forgot to add that I got the fault code from the car:

1 Fault Found:

000564 - Boost Pressure Regulation

P0234 - 000 - Limit Exceeded (Overboost Condition) - Intermittent

Unfortunately I have been unable to talk to Kelly at KDS Keltec regarding replacing the turbo :(
