gearbox woes

Featured Replies

well, having a casual drive to a mates, overtooks a car, clipped a cats eye and demolished the gearbox, oil everywhere :(

question is, can you buy just the casings for gearboxes and if so where from?

or, do blt gearboxes fit on asz engines, and vica versa.

cheers in advance

Tom

Either you have the biggest cats eyes in the world or are running way too low. Probably easier to swap the whole box, I'd have to check what's fitted to what engine but if the part numbers match then it'll swap. I'll check in a bit.

Right, just looked at your previous posts, you have a VRS, ASZ was 5 speed 02T according to Haynes, VRS had either a 5 speed on early cars or a 6 speed on later cars, you'll want like for like unless you fancy extra work.

Haynes is rubbish on the vRS.

All vRS Fabia have 6 speed 02M boxes. Throughout the years they revised the gear ratios, but the casings are the same, and they all fit between one another.

More than likely mate I build gearboxes for a classic Mini's and they can be a bit of a pig to do. You will have to lock up the mainshaft by selecting two gear's at once so that you can undo the large pinion's on the mainshaft so that you can undo/remove it all. Ususally they are around 150lbs ft+ so very tight to undo and can cause damage to the gear's themselves if done incorrectly.

I found this guide for a lad on another forum I am on to help him rebuild his 1.8t box from his A3, it's very indepth and will give you a look into what's involved.

Personally I'd be finding a second hand box rather than trying to swap the casing.

Yeah have a search there's a spreadsheet on here somewhere with all the comparable boxes. They are fairly readily available so I'd just swap it over personally.

ahhh so many opinions! but thankyou all

i spoke to the stealers this morning and they want 380 quid for the half of the case that is broken, i can get a second hand box for 350 ish, and that eliminates the need to swap it all over so i think im gonna go down that route. ive done the clutch on mine before so i can get the box in and out easy enough. Other than ebay does anyone know of anywhere decent to get a second hand box?

cheers :)
