wing mirror glass fell out

Featured Replies

Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. Pulled away and the drivers side glass just fell out. £51+vat at the dealers to replace. I Wonder if this problem occurs only on models with heated mirrors. Maybe the heater weakens the bonding. Pretty poor whatever it is

Someone nicked my driver's side mirror (not surprised when I was told £50 for a replacement!) when I was parked up.

So I got a cheap one from Halfrauds for about £10. Bit smaller than OEM but does the job just fine.

The mirror parting company with the backing plate is quite common on a few manufacturers vehicles - it's not just the VAG group products that suffer. My 2005 Vectra had the drivers mirror replaced after it fell out & shattered on the road. Step-daughter managed to catch the passenger mirror thankfully and I managed to stick it back onto the plastic plate using superglue.

The glue used to bond the mirror to the backing plastic plate deteriorates over time. I can only assume that this is probably hastened by the mirrors being heated.

Just to add to this thread.

I'm driving down the M40 in the outside lane when all of a sudden BANG and the drivers side door mirror explodes into lots of pieces.

Gave me a bit of a shock and it was fortunate not to have someone tail-gateing.

Drive a further 50 miles cautiously as it's amazing how you miss a door mirror.

Once home, I can see the scratches to the passenger door as a result of the shards of glass.

So now it's a new mirror and maybe I'll get away with T-cut or something.

Looks like the glue they used has just aged and parted company with the mirror.

Mine's a 2006 1.6 elegance so maybe anyone out there with a similar aged vehicle should just have a quick check of your door mirrors.

It's beginning to sound as if it is worth pulling them all off anyway and refixing them at leisure rather than waiting for them to depart at an awkward time. Mine have done nothing bad since being refixed. I don't think the epoxy ever weakens much, even when mirrors are heated.

My door mirror glass was close to falling off (removed it just before it fell off) but it wasn't the double tape that caused the problem. The black paint had almost all came away from the silvering on the rear of the mirror. The paint was well and truly stuck to the double sided adhesive on the back plate. I repainted the back of the mirror and reattached with double sided tape sold as being suitable for attaching number plates. Our local car parts/accessory shop has replacement glass for under £10 but these do not have the wide angle bit .

Just had to re-glue my n/s mirror too. Stated to vibrate recently so pushed it back on firmly, which was fine for a while but started vibrating again yesterday. Pulled it off - just fell away in my hand - and glued it back on. Works Scout had similar problem a while back on o/s , so it was stuck back on too. It's still holding and heater element still works.

Pretty common happened to mine day before she went.

I've had some crap luck this week.... My neighbours daughter took out the drivers side mirror and also dented the door (getting sorted within the next couple of days) and today the mirror glass fell out on the passenger side! I was waiting at the lights and just heard a smash and the mirror was completely gone!! I really do regret buying a Skoda with all the issues that keep popping up with it

My wife recently bought a 2008 Octavia Estate and it has this very problem (wobbly driver-side door mirror). The Haynes Manual explains and shows how to go about taking the whole thing apart. Should have been a recall issue. I know not ‘all’ drivers bother using mirrors; but to drive safely how can you do without them!

So - what would you guys recommend as the best way to attach a replacement glass to the heated plate within the mirror housing - double-sided tape or epoxy or other adhesive?
